On May 30, 1922 the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated. Commission president William H. Taft - who was then Chief Justice of the United States - dedicated the Memorial on May 30, 1922 and presented it to President Warren G. Harding, who accepted it on behalf of the American people.
President Lincoln’s only surviving son was a special guest at the dedication ceremony, receiving an ovation when he reached his seat. Robert Todd Lincoln did not deliver remarks but listened with great interest as other speakers paid tribute to his father.
The seating, like much of Washington, was segregated by race, yet the organizers chose Dr. Robert Russo Moton, President of Tuskegee Institute, as the keynote speaker. Addressing the mostly white crowd, Moton delivered the first of what would be many civil rights speeches at the memorial. He challenged the audience to consider Lincoln’s call for a “new birth of freedom.” From that day forward, the Lincoln Memorial became a national gathering place for groups demanding racial and social justice.

I can't image how emotional this must be for Robert. His father's memorial is being dedicated, and he's giving an impassioned speech about it to a public that sees his dad as one of the greatest men to ever live

To the best of my knowledge, Robert Lincoln did not give a speech at the event. The white bearded man speaking was the poet Edwin Markham delivering his famous poem "Lincoln, The Man of the People".

@@tomlapsley4686 Moreover, from what I have read, Robert did not have much of an emotional relationship with his father, though this did not mitigate the psychological effect of his father's death on him. Robert tried to avoid the shadow of his father, and live his own life. Nevertheless, he was a public witness to the deaths of two other presidents (he was Sec'y of War at the time of Garfield's death in 1881, and was just outside the building where McKinley was shot in 1901 at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, NY)--here he is at the dedication of his father's memorial, with another President who would die in office (heart attack, August 2nd, 1923, on a train in California). One can only guess what this all meant to him; Robert himself would pass on in 1926.

Wonderful video. Robert Todd Lincoln was a successful man himself--a public servant throughout his life. He is buried not far from the Lincoln Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery. Although only a glimpse of him near the end of this video, it is uplifting to see the son of America's greatest president celebrating the life of his martyred father.

Amazing video of this 1922 dedication. Finding Robert Todd Lincoln talking to President Harding at the 3:47 mark was remarkable. He must have been overwhelmed by emotion and memories at this event. Thanks for posting.

Am surprised they didn't have better film footage of this event, and especially Robert Todd Lincoln who would die just a few years later....People, the media, back then wasn't anything like it is today, that's for sure!!!

Amazing to see a moving image of the son of the greatest President to ever live. President Lincoln had four sons but Robert his oldest was the only one to live into adulthood. I wish his three brothers were there with him in 1922 to honor their great father.

Awesome video .....wish they had more footage of Robert Lincoln!! Almost 100 yrs back in time, he was a 'walking history book'!! Imagine all he experienced!! It's a shame there's so little film footage of this event n also Robert Lincoln as well, but the media back then didn't exist as we know it today! Amazing what happened once 'sound' came in the late 20's.......

So true! Not only was he present at his father’s death, but in 1881 he witnessed the assassination of James Garfield. And in 1901 he was nearby when William McKinley was shot.

@@catherineehlers8115 yes Robert was present at his fathers death, but being tired from travel that day, he declined the offer to attend the Theater with his parents on the night of April 14th. What if...he had actually been present during the assassination of his father? I wonder if he, Robert -ever thought that maybe he Could have intervened?

At 3:50 I see Warren Harding on the left speaking to the eldest son of Abraham Lincoln, Robert, who is standing in the middle. The man on the right looks a whole lot like Abraham Lincoln in many ways. I wonder if he was a relative of the Lincolns like a cousin or nephew.
