Also, I definitely think Lincoln would be happier in a sanctuary with a flock, assuming he's physically healthy and not a "special needs" bird that ends up isolated in his own cage due to some sort of disability.

Until Lincoln gets a full physical done I don't know if a sanctuary would be a good choice right now, especially if the other birds might bully him. It seems he's very clever and wanting a connection with someone but is in physical and emotional pain. I'd say keep working with him, get his medical stuff done, and in the meantime try to find someone who would want to take him on. Good on Amber for trying to make his life nice!!

Vet, vet, vet is all I can focus on. He's greasy and dull and out of shape and that's first priority. I don't know that he'd be a good candidate for sanctuary based on the severe atrophy. Although I think sanctuary would be my personal end goal once he's healthy. Leave that poor guy alone to be a bird again since right now he's basically an angry paperweight because of people.

Bless Her Heart. Being 80 years old just lost her husband and now have one of my most afraid of birds because of the shear size of their BEAKS. THEY HAVE this large overhanging hook and it looks like you could use it to open cans AND FACES. Do you know what I like about older people ( I'm 65 ) is they just say it the way it is. Amber just wanted him to have the best home and people that love him and know how to handle then. As we know often birds are found in small cages where the owner has passed away or simply moved and left the bird to die from no food or water, but Amber call you both in order to place him where he needs to be. I really want to know what happen to this bird and as well how Amber was moving forward nu getting it help. Thx👏👏👏👍👍❤.

I have a 27YO CAG that twists her body and makes that "gurgling" sound. We call it "percolating" because she sounds like a coffee maker. She does that when she's unsure about something new. Her previous owner couldn't handle her and moved her out to a large kennel used for police dogs in training. She was basically feral when I was called to rescue her. So, that may be a natural/wild behavior. But my CAG also lowers her head in a more defensive mode. Like Lincoln, my CAG had 1 old, worn out toy and 1 bell in bed cage. They appear to have similar life experiences, but for the fact that mine was born in captivity.

You know in old cartoons when a shy kid bashfully looks up to ask a question and is wringing their hands and twisting their foot in the dirt, while stuttering...? I think that's a prime indicator of the neurological state of nervous/bashful. There's fear and trepidation involved. I know birds aren't mammals, but I think it may be a "lizzard brain" thing. Maybe?

By the way,Jamie, the heartbreak and sadness on your face as you and Dave comprehended the situation is exactly what we are all feeling. You were called in for your usual consult and confronted with a neglected animal - but it's not out of cruelty and Amber is going through a lot - and it must have been so hard for you both to be there and be professional and assess things but at the same time its clear you were both so very sad at the entire situation for both of them. We feel you! You didnt have to apologize or explain yourself! We were right there with you and how hard it must have been to be there and how even more difficult it must have been to leave Lincoln there. Please - let us know what happens from here!

Scrolling thru this comment section is kind of restoring my faith in humanity. KZfaq is usually SO full of hate and know-it-alls and Monday morning quarterbacks and _JUDGEMENT_ ...but _here_ I'm seeing mostly empathy and compassion and genuine concern. I am not a bird person. I don't and have never owned a bird, nor do I know anyone who has. I actually kind of hate birds, to be honest. No clue how I stumbled upon this channel, but I'm glad I did. And I've gotta say, you "bird people" (am I allowed to say that?) have a pretty amazing community here. ♡

Yeah definitely need to find out what's going in with him medically. It kinda looks like those body twists is him trying to shift his weight off the one leg and foot. I think he's in pain and has been for a while. Long term pain would obviously effect his mood and behaviour towards humans as he might have gotten an injury when he was caught in the wild. I hate to see him having such a poor quality of life and I'm grateful that Amber wants more for him. When she said she wanted to try release him and see if he came back, my heart sank! I'm glad she's thought better of that idea because it sounds like an awful plan!

He's so precious! I was totally surprised by how willing he was to target, and how quickly he picked it up. The little grumbles sound just like my grey lol. When we got her she had an injury and need twice daily physical therapy on her legs, and when we had to towel her (because she was not tame at all then) she'd growl and mutter under her breath just like that lol.

Maybe the twisting is a sign of " hey what your 're trying to make me do is gonna hurt me," or " i feel uncomfortable doing that."
@BlueEternities
@BlueEternities 4 жыл бұрын
I'm getting the very strong feeling that the twisting is at least a bit anxiety. It's like the stress is built up to where he's constantly in fight or flight near humans, despite really wanting to interact. I think he's had some bad experiences and not enough good ones to remember to sway him towards the trust that he so desperately wants to have. It's so difficult watching situations like this where humans just don't seem to think about what they're doing taking another life into their responsibility without having enough interest to learn to actually care for that life. He's so tired of being so scared but just needs someone to trust. The most frustrating part is that if you can become someone that bird trusts, I bet it would be one of the best birds you could ever have. Super smart and such a strong desire for a proper relationship.

Lincoln is a very smart bird. To try and actually answer the question, what I think should happen to Lincoln, in a perfect situation would be- he needs a person who Lincoln is willing to bond with and who is willing to invest in his health and training long term (obv :D). This bird seems a bit overweight too, no? Or is it the feathers? Anyhow, how to get to this situation is the question. How to find a perfect owner for a bird? Regular playdates with a potential new human? See what Lincoln best responds to. Where? In his current home or in this sanctuary? His current owner could put in the work, but what if this bird bonds with her and after a while she is gone too? (I hope she lives long, happy, and healthy life!) Can't wait ho hear how this situation has evolved, cause it seems that this happened around Christmas (I think I saw a Christmas tree there).
@SeabassFishbrains
@SeabassFishbrains 4 жыл бұрын
He definitely seems extremely overweight, it's not just the feathers (those are bad too though) especially considering that he's a Timmeh and they're pretty darn small but who can blame him for it if he hasn't flown or lived outside of a cage that small for 30 years. I really hope he can be rehabilitated, he's obviously a smart bird and his owner's heart does seem to be in the right place.

Oh what a sad situation. I’m not sure what the best situation is but I’m pretty confident a goal should be to get Lincoln out of Ambers care. I think she would be much happier with a cat or little dog-something that is not physically dangerous or straining and would be happy to just hang out with her, and Lincoln needs an end goal of a new permanent solution - whether a sanctuary or new home.

This is beyond heartbreaking. This lady doesnt need tools and new techniques, she needs to find the bird a home with people who will care for him-although we are all clearly on the same page that he needs a vet visit yesterday before any plans are made. But the kindest thing to do all around is to remove this bird before there is one more incident and she releases him outside where he will immediately attack someone else on the ground out of pure terror or most likely become prey for local wildlife. We should not insult or judge this woman, she is in mourning for her husband and dealing with a bird whom she is afraid of and is simply doing her best to cope with. It seems this was not her pet or idea to begin with and she clearly doesnt want to spend her remaining years training and developing a relationship with Lincoln. She cant even rouse herself to take him to the vet for the past years and that attitude is not going to change overnight because of new perches in the cage. The kindest thing to do for both is to take the bird away. Thats clearly what she truly wants from your help - this was not a usual consult as much as it was a call for help made to you with the very last bit of care or responsibility for the bird from a vulnerable owner. Dont misunderstand her - she clearly told you she is willing to release him - take her seriously. Please update us!

I have a Timneh African grey and she makes the same, exact sounds when a stranger comes in the house and approaches her, or when a new object that she's fearful of is showed up in her space. She fluffs up to make herself look bigger and growling sounds make her appear more menacing (she thinks 🤭). In reality, she's afraid and wants it to go away. Gradually introducing something (obviously) works much better. I like to call it the dinosaur sounds (being they evolved from them) and like to imagine they had similar behavior. That little guy seems like he could adjust his behavior and lose some of the fear of humans if he was in a stable, long term home. There is a great avian vet in Loxahatchee, Florida -Dr Clubb, BTW. Best of luck to the lady and lots of love and patience with the timneh. They really are amazing when given a chance!🥰

How about transferring the bird to a capable foster home where he could have a health assessment and then work on behavioral issues since he seems to show such promise? Then he may do very well in a new environment with other people and even other parrots to keep him distracted and entertained. HIs present owner can take care of her own needs (as she should) and provide a good future for the bird at the same time.

And he didnt move a lot on is own, when we came to close, to fast he would just panic, but we found out very quicky that he had little wounds under his feet and 2 big (2cm) wounds under his wings caused by a vitamin A deficiency. So he didnt only scream because he was scared, when lifted his foot it would just hurt. he would also grumple, like a soft growl. so maybe Lincoln also got a few wounds? (The wounds underneath Charlie's wings were very difficult to see, because it was underneath a layer of feathers.) (how did I fix him?) I switched his diet, and he started to trusted me more and more. The wounds under his feet were heald very quickly, but it took 7 months to heal the wounds under his wings, because he would open them up himself. The vet said it was a diverent way of plukking, he was bored so he would clean the wounds so hard, that they become open again, and after 3 years in that cage it would just be a habbit. Now 1 year later, he is a very happy healthy sweet bird that really likes cuddles, but he still grumpels when he doesnt agree with something. getting him healthy was not the difficult part, making him believe that he could use his feet again was the difficult part.

Miriam: a question, if I may :) My eldest grey just had a thourough checkup and his bloodwork etc. were al fabulous, but he has this near-ulceration spot under his left foot (scales are missing). Did you do anything in particulair to help your bird heal? I always have different (material, diameter and angled) perches, they walk on the floor a lot (I do not use grates) and they are scared to death of vetwrapped perches and he will try to eat towels if I wrap them around the perches. The vet suggested some fish-oil-based supplements as well (but it is to soon to say if they help him or not). So any suggestions/ tips are very welcome.

muurrarium I disinfected is feet (with a spray, I would trick him by doing it while I was showering him with an plant spayer) and had a special wound cream based on honey. So maybe that can help you bird as well. But because his wounded on his feet were so severe, the vet told me to put him on a perch with food and water very near by, so the wounds had time te heal, so I put him in a central spot in the living room that he had things to see and waited, slowly the wounds were healing and I would make his perch bigger. The wounds under his wings however not. I tried every thing, even a collar, but I finally could let him to stop touching it by bringing him an a vacation, distracting him when ever he would touch it, when the wounds finally healed he also stopt touching it.

@@paarden654321 THANK YOU!! (oops sorry for shouting) but that is a great answer. :D Now i feel a bit like a fool: I know that cream you mean (I actually have it here, in case of wounds) but never even thought of using it on the underside of the feet because I feared it would make them too slippery. Thank you SO much for opening my eyes to the option! My first grey was a plucker (traumatized bird prolly) no matter what we tried so I am sincerely in awe you managed to distract your bird long and often enough to get those wounds to heal up. That took a lot! Boelveel dank ook namens jouw gaai! Time to give a certain guy his footmassage (I already filed his nails a few days ago, so he will probably like the attention). \o/

I'm sure there's loads of success stories out there and this bird is receptive of training. However, building a bond just to confuse it again when his current owner passes seems so sad. I'd consider re-homing to someone that has experience training birds and feels up to another commitment or as suggested in video then rather a sanctuary, but he'd probably need some support to learn to fly so as not to get bullied and also be desensitized to all the changes?

Halfway thru my head was saying Sanctuary. And I've looked at the other comments that have been made so far, and re-run the video a couple times, and I see a lot of valid points being made. But he IS smart and receptive. And what I saw near the end is that Amber seemed to actually WANT to interact with him. I KNOW it will take a LOT of WORK. I don't know what HER health is like. She's widowed so she might not even know what her finances are going to be like yet, so she might not be able to afford any vet care he needs. I've been widowed a year, and a month and a half ago I got a bird, that was supposedly hand fed - but he doesn't even know to step up yet, so he's going to take some work. So I can also look at it, somewhat, from Amber's point of view. One thing I see differently than younger people, and Amber is a bit older than me, so I KNOW it's the same for her. When we were your age, people would get a bird - or birds - and they'd sit in the cage all the time, and sometimes you could teach them a couple words. You definitely didn't consider taking them out and playing with them! So I KNOW THAT is a new idea for Amber. She said they've had the bird for 30 years. And she didn't KNOW that you could actually interact with a bird. She didn't know that they could be a companion instead of just a pretty in a cage. He senses her fear, and responds to it just like any other animal would. But when I saw her seem to have a desire to learn and try to Interact with him, I was no longer on the Sanctuary train! Like I said, I don't know what her health issues are, or if she even has any. Does she have the Stamina? But - like you always say - you only train for just a few minutes at a time - it's NOT HOURS of drudgery every day. I hope she is able to try. As she gains confidence he won't be so fearful himself. It's been his home for 30 years, and he lost the one person who had "ownership" of him, and he lost his cage friend, too. I did hear her say that the birds were her husband's. So he's known her for 30 years, and BOTH of them seemed willing and eager to learn. I know that I had friends when I was a kid who had birds - always caged. We had birds while my kids were growing up, and we taught them songs and whistles. And the first time I went on KZfaq and saw videos of people PLAYING WITH THEIR BIRDS I sobbed so hard I couldn't breathe! I always LOVED birds! But we were always told to keep them in their cage or they'd fly out a window or door. It sounds like that's the same life that Lincoln has had. And it looked to me like Amber was really interested in learning to do it the new way! I hope that whatever is best for both of them happens!

Glad to hear you learned. :) My first african grey arrived in the early 1980's, as a guest that never left (same situation: his chosen human died and the wife dared not handle him at all) and of course he came out of his cage, was handled, joined us in the shower, got blowdried, did tricks we invented, learned a heap of new words and phrases all by himself... so what nonsense is that about birds just being ornaments "back in the day"?

This one was hard to watch. It's clear the owner wants the best for him so I definitely give her credit for that but there are so many things that are sad about his life! His cage is so small...especially since he never comes out😢😢 did she say they'd had him for 30 years..?? Maybe I heard wrong. To think that's been his life for that long. **side note: I wish we could see a follow up on some of these heartbreaking cases. It's so hard to watch the videos and see the sad conditions they live in and never know what happened with them. Personally I think a sanctuary but hopefully one equipped to help him with adjusting 🙂

@@luciferfaust no it is not :) If a cage is not large enough for a bird to completely stretch and at least flap its wings in is too bloody small, it's that easy. This bird has no muscles left because there is no room to move. (It looks like an empty cage, but the perches divide it up, so no room to move the wings without hurting them)

@@muurrarium9460 relax, I'm just... What's the word. Spitballing? Guessing? Based in my experience with my own African grey. He didn't like his new larger cage when I got him until he got accustomed to the new setting. Then we moved him from the smaller cage to the medium one. Now he's got a macaw sized cage, damn spoiled bird. My point is, that cage, whether it's too small or not, is the bird's home, it's his only domain, it's where he feels safe, and putting him in a new, big cage without getting him used to it nearby might be too much at once.

@@luciferfaust LOL, the term spitballing is not familiar. But ok it seems you meant well ;) Great to hear you also have a grey. Great guys (and galls) imho. Mine actually went for the lager cage by himself, he did not "get moved to"...no sir, he moved in spontaneus and claimed it! It was supposed to be the play-cage, but he decided not to go back to the former cage no matter what. It was sooo funny! Greys are flockbirds, they are safe in a crowd, so cages are a very poor second best to provide safety. Macawsized* sounds like fun, I hope you both will have many, many happy years together. He likes to play with empty bottles on the floor of his cage.

My birds don't like it when I wear a hat. I still wear hats times to times because want them to be comfortable with hats, because you know, they gotta be flexible with new things. They are no longer terrified of hats but they sure will ignore my requests when I have one on! I am wondering if they are trying to tell me that hats don't look good on me?🤔

I'm not a bird keeper, I'm just an observer. It seems to me that Lincoln is stressed on a few different levels. Among them, some separation anxiety from the loss of the person he had bonded with. He's very leery of people, and probably for good reason. What are the chances that you will take him in yourselves? He needs stability, and very knowledgeable and understanding keepers. I hope the best for Lincoln, and I'll keep an eye out for updates in regard to him. Is there any possibly that his odd stance and/or his low grumble are signs of some underlying respiratory issue?
