Asylum records hired me and my Artisan Mobile remote recording truck to capture this and 2 other shows of the delightful Linda Ronstadt. Just 30 years old she was flying high at the time, 7 records in to an amazing run of 25. The band was solid, really great players paying attention to their leader and working like a well-oiled machine. This was at the Fox Theater in downtown Atlanta, a venue known for excellent sonics and seating, making for a happy crew, crowd, and Linda. I was only 22 at the time, a guitar player interested in getting to know her band, all fine players. It was a happy gig traveling with Linda. I think of her all the time, hoping her health is being kind to her. Sending my very best to you, Linda. 🌺❤️🌹

September 17, 1977 is an easy date to remember for me, because it was the day after I got out of the Army, and I saw Linda at the Greek Theater at UCal Berkley. It was, in a word, “stunning!” No dancers, no light show, no pyrotechnics, no extraneous BS distractions. Just one incredible singer with an equally incredible backing band, getting by on talent alone. Of all these modern day pre-fab, shake-n-bake “divas,” there’s not a single one who’s good enough to even sweep the stage for Linda Ronstadt, much less share it with her. Any young, aspiring female singer who truly wants to better herself, should study Linda Ronstadt standing alone onstage, singing “Desperado.”

When my millennial son wants to listen to Rock he states simply “we all listen to you’re era from late 60s, all the 70s, thru the early 80s. It is just superior”. Our beloved Linda Ronstadt suffers specifically from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. She has said this in at least one interview I've read. PSP is Parkinson's related but is its own thing, a pretty rare disease. I know about it, one of my parents suffered the same. It's pretty terrible. There is no cure, barely any treatment. In the course of the disease, the loss of muscle control often begins with throat and swallow control. Hence the problems singing. There is little or no cognitive loss. God Bless Linda Ronstadt!

This was the point in her set when you realized live "this really is rock n roll, not pop." I don't think I've ever heard anybody fill up an arena and match the band with the sound of a voice. The voice was a freak of nature live. And she didn't work for that sound, kind of like a great Wagnerian soprano. It wasn't just loud, it was fat, filled up every open space. It was so easy for her. At the end of the new documentary 5 great singers at her induction ceremony to the rock hall of fame take a stab at "When Will I Be Loved?" Listen to them each struggle with one line at a time, including a relatively young Carrie Underwood, and then listen to any performance by Linda of the same song.

The only female rock artist to do 5 consecutive platinum albums in a row. Then she’d been there, did that and moved on to do the largest non English speaking album ever, then wins a Tony, then a Grammy with Aaron Neville, then sings with Dolly and Emmylou to form the Trio. Whatever she did she excelled. Oh, and her boyfriend was governor of California. Once in a lifetime talent. And gorgeous too boot. I guess some people do get it all. Sad about the Parkinson’s but she’ll always be that 23 year old Linda to me.

I have seen her numerous times. But one performance in particular stands out. Greek Theatre in Berkeley - ca. 1978. She had just finished a flawless rendition of Blue Bayou and for a couple of seconds you could have heard a pin drop. Then, just a few seats away, some random woman let out a distinct sigh. Sounded like she would faint right there! Then the audience just went nuts! Remember this like it was yesterday.

linda had major crossover appeal, i was a head banger, or what they called acid rocker back in those days, never listened to pop but always watched linda because she was so damn good, and fine as hell.

When Waddy’s strap falls of in his solo Linda puts it back on. I’d have loved to have been in a bar band with her. Linda was the queen. What a musical dynamo ... voice of the ages. In a lotta ways she’s one of the guys. I bet she coiled cables and moved equipment at the end of the night. Probably even drum cases too. Me when the equipment is out the back door “Hey Linda, wanna ride to your car?”🤗

Of course, I was pissed off he wrecked the poster, but when I think of it now, it's hilarious. She was so hot!
