Linda, have you ever thought of passing your tulips on to people who live in Northern areas where tulips are a perennial? It breaks my heart they go into compost. Lol. Am I the only one that wants to save every plant?! It always crushes my heart when I go into a place like Walmart and they just let their plants die because they don't water them. I am sure you would have alot of takers of your beautiful, fabulous tulips! Your yard is stunning!

Karie....you are a true horticulturist. You, like myself, love plants. Everything about them is fun and interesting. Of course, all horticulturist love all aspects of gardening, where as, some people can't be bothered with the details; they like the show or therapy of a gardening. i stopped watching this video the moment she said and showed her pulling out the plant for composting. To me, she might as well just hire a landscaper to do the work. Anybody can have a splendid tulip display be buying new bulbs. Now, if she had these for several years.....that would be impressive !

Pass the word onto Linda Vater that she can ship the 700 tulips to our newly formed garden club in Minnesota and we will plant them around town. :) In the meanwhile, I am sharing this and the window box post to our Facebook page. Gotta love a garden for the four seasons!

Who else's jaw literally dropped open in shock when she said she pulled them up every year?!😲 I planted over 300 this last Fall & I know the cost & the hard work that went into that & def would not want to do that year after year!😖😓 After reading some of the comments I found out that she lives in a southern zone where they apparently will not survive until the following Spring!☹ I wish they would have stated that in the video as some beginer gardeners may not know better!😟 I live in zone 8b & mine not only come back every year, they have a lot longer blooming time then her 1 month!🙂 (It did say Oklahoma City under Linda's name, but they should have explained more clearly this fact). I also thought it was strange that her ground phlox were already in bloom as mine do not usually start blooming until around June (no sooner then May 15th) - they are def a Summer bloomer for me. But her living in a warmer climate accounted for this too. Just an FYI for those who were interested in this plant that you may not have it bloom w/ your tulips like she did.🌸

True gardener would dig them up after they go brown - store them - then give them a proper chill in the fridge/freezer. There are tricks around this - but she just wants a pretty garden (no brown).

I love the garden but I was somewhat disappointed that she discards the tulip bulbs every year. she can still pull them up if they are unsightly and put them in a trench out back in the sun until the foliage dies back (only takes few weeks) then replant them for next year
@willhigginbotham6748
@willhigginbotham6748 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately for her, tulips are not reliable perennials in warmer climates like Oklahoma. Tulips require a cold winter to perform as a perennial (I think it's somewhere around 16 weeks of cold but all bulbs are different). The other issue she'd have with them if she was in a cooler region is that watering your flowerbeds in the summer will cause your dormant tulip bulbs to rot. She'd never be able to plant anything around them that requires regular watering during the late Spring, Summer, and Fall months. For these reasons, a lot of gardeners will treat bulbs like hyacinths and tulips as early-blooming annuals to fill in the gap before everything else catches up.

True tulip gardeners in warm climate (i.e.) California will dig up the bulbs once it turns brown and save them for the next year (give them a proper chill before planting). 700 bulbs tossed is a waste IMO.

In the south those bulbs are annuals- they won't come back again because a cold winter is necessary for them to come back and bloom the next year.

Which varieties did you plant? Here in Kansas City they often don't come up. I planted Angelique one year and about half flowered. The others didn't and then they never showed up the following year. I even planted in bulb cages to prevent animals from getting to them. It was disappointing. I'd love to know which work for naturalizing like yours have done.
@robrosy
@robrosy 3 жыл бұрын
A lot of modern tulips are species tulips.. they are generally not good at naturalising and don’t produce a good show after the first year.. this lady clearly wants a spectacular display every year so fresh bulbs are the way the go really. If you’ve got money why not? She’s clearly got plenty lol

If she compost her tulips.....can I have them 😄 I get why some people do that but honestly I never rip mine out....I just mulch them really well then clear the mulch during spring. The mulch goes to other areas in the garden and then turn to soil which I reuse. Happy cycle happy life.

I’m so disappointed in everyone’s attitude towards Linda and her composting her tulips. In our climate they would have to be stored then refrigerated, which many of us don’t have the space for or the time to do all of this. We have to treat them as annuals and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. It’s her garden, her money and her time unless you pay her bills don’t tell her what to do. Plus even if she had the time to send them to someone then everyone who didn’t get the tulips would be mad. If you want tulips and they are perennial in your area buy your own.

In my neighborhood that would be a daily feast for the deer herds, rabbits and groundhogs for as long as any of it would remain. After everything above ground was eaten, the bulbs would then be dug up and eaten by squirrels. So, your idea of feeding the neighborhood wildlife was commendable but apparently you planted it in the wrong location.

Well seen 99% of us aren't going to ripe up bulbs that took a long time to get to the point they are large enough to plant by those that cultivate tulip and then she rips them up and compose them. She wouldn't think of giving them to someone that can't afore. No she doesn't think about others.
