I've always said that learning a new language leads you to seeing the world differently - so many concepts in the language are linked to the way one sees and understands the world. If you stop trying to translate everything literally into your own language, and just try to feel the language, the new concepts will open your mind! Also, I like to say that learning any new language will open up a whole different side of the internet! haha You get to see and understand the news from different views, different cultures, it really gives you a more rounded understanding of what is going on. I'm a native French speaker, and started seriously learning English when I was a teen just so I could understand song lyrics and watch shows/movies in English. I started practicing English in international chat rooms online in the early 2000s and met my husband! I have now been living in Chicago (where he's from) for 15 years, I work for a German EdTech company (foreign language teaching industry!) and that could not have happened if I never learned English. I started learning Korean during the pandemic, as I fell down the k-pop and then k-drama rabbit hole. I can now understand a lot of language subtleties when watching a drama, though I'm far from being able to watch without subtitles! But, I do catch language concepts such as the whole "oppa/nuna" or formal/informal levels of speech that are sometimes not well translated in English but play a huge part in the characters' dynamics, etc... Anyway, I'm a big fan of language learning! it can be any language! I always say go for it: It's never a waste of time!!!

Yeah, I feel EXACTLY the same with me. When I was a teenager I really hated it, but I been reading in English for about a year. And so happy, because I read so many greats books and things on KZfaq who aren't in my own language. It's a really useful language, (even if don't think it's pretty, actually I still don't like the melody 😅). But you can get to much from it, when you learn it!🎉 Officially, I started to learn it last month because I never study grammar after 😊

Languages have opened a whole new world to me, especially when it comes to research. I am currently doing a master's degree in music teaching, focusing on electronic music. And there are so many papers that I can find and understand, written in German, even with my intermediate level. It's a huge opportunity to learn more of the language, broaden your horizons and enrich your thesis. I just love that learning German has opened this opportunity to me. Not to mention all the benefits of expressing yourself in a different way, understanding a different lifestyle and different ways of thinking. It really makes a person more confident

My native language is German and I've learned English at school. At some point I stumbled upon your channel and was incredibly fascinated. I had always been interested in Sweden as my ancestors are from there and I just think it's a really beautiful country. Finding your channel got me interested in this incredibly beautiful language as well! It's not that hard as I have a lot of motivation and Swedish got a lot of similarities to German and English, which I think is great for getting into language learning. However, your channel did not only get me interested in Swedish, but also other languages. I've been wanting to learn other languages, especially ones with a different alphabet or writing system, but I've had trouble deciding on one as I lacked the motivation for them. Recently I've begun to get really interested in Chinese culture and I think the writing system is incredibly beautiful. Aside from that it could be quite useful in everyday life as well. I've been quite motivated to continue my language learning journey with Swedish (and Chinese when I've reached a higer level in Swedish) and I'm looking forward to the future. My goal for Swedish is to reach fluency, my goal in Chinese is to just have fun. Your videos are keeping me extremely motivated. Thank you for all your hard work! ❤ I really hope you've been well recently after everything that has happend. ❤

Hi Lindie, I always like your videos but I also wanna give you my perspective as a languages enthusiast. I speak English as foreign language and a little bit of other languages. It's true that speak different languages it opens you different opportunities and it's awesome. I'd also list the bad aspects of learning a language. If I don't live in a country where your target language is spoken, I may feel isolated like it often happens when I study Chinese. Building relationships through apps it's not simple because not many people that download those apps are willing to learn a new language. Also, it requires a countless period of time alone to be able to speak at least the basics especially if my target language is completely different from my native one. Another aspect is that I don't find many people with the same passion of ours and it makes you feel like you can't use that skill on a daily basis unless you use constantly an app. Sure, you can study languages with tutors or travel but I don't always have the possibility to spend more than 20 euros for a single lesson on italki (despite it's an awesome app to learn languages). I feel that my passion is innate but also has pros and cons.

Alike your first point, the same with myself, I had severe social anxiety and was absolutely terrified to talk to people out in public and as you said “make my voice heard” because I hated attention solely on me (or so it felt like it). Learning languages has indefinitely allowed me to break that shy and socially awkward barrier and communicate with others alongside establish friendships that feel like extended family. Thank you for this video! 😎

I am so glad that you did a clip on this Lindie!! I will forEVER be greatful to my mother for encouraging me to learn a new language at a very young age ( I was 7 when started to learn french). I can now speak french fluently and have a very good working knowledge of German and a good working knowledge of spanish. I'm currently working on improving those two languages because I want to learn arabic. I actually have the book and started a few sessions on Duolingo. I believe to my CORE that if everyone leanred a new language and then connected with one person from the countrly in which that language was spoken, there would be less hate and violence in the world. Just making a connection through a language helps to create a new perspective that may not have been even slightly percieved if it the connection was made in english (or whatever the mother tongue is). Learning a new language is the key to much more love and lots less hate in the world. Keep sharing you love of languages Lindie and all your knowledge - you are doing what you're supposed to be doing 🙂

In another video, someone said "When you've learned a language, if you care enough, part of you becomes a member of the tribe to which that language belongs." I've always been interested in languages; most of my family is bilingual in English and Mennonite Low German (which I am also trying to learn as it's my heritage language), and I had to take some mandatory French in school which I have since forgotten. I've also been learning High German on and off since I was about 15. But the big language for me is Finnish. I've been learning it for eight years now, and it has brought me so many new friends and experiences that I never could've imagined, which have in turn helped me to learn more about myself. I'm still not as fluent in Finnish as I want to be, but it means so much to me, and I'm forever grateful to it.

I love Lindie's enthusiasm for languages, her positive approach is an inspiration for so many, as is the way she incorporates multiple languages into her daily life. I can think of few things more valuable than acquiring this amazing skill, that connects you to millions more people from different backgrounds around the world, a skill that you can take everywhere you go, which is yours to keep.

random suggestion, but you should check out Taiwanese/Hokkien if you are able to! It has loan words from both Japanese and Korean (since back then when Korean and Japan missionaries came to China around Tang Dynasty, Hokkien was the language of the time, not Mandarin), so maybe you'll find it interesting. I'm student in high school and I absolutely agree with you about what you say about the confidence. Before focusing on learning English, I was so shy, I can't speak with anyone, and I was a extremely introvert. But now, I'm improving it. I'm more confident before though I also feel a bit shy right now. From a students consider English as a compulsory subject in school, Lindie make me more love languages, especially English. You triggered my interest in learning language a lot. After one year study hard, study smart, I feel my English changed dramatically (though it's not really good), and I also have more confident. And I hope that one day I can be like you, speak more languages, become more confident. Thanks you a lot. Love from Vietnam. And hope that one day you up more video about learning Vietnamese. Omg this is the first time I have commented on youtube in English ❤
