Hi Curtis, thanks for your D10 one. Dunno why but they don't popup on YT for a while in the Northern Hemisphere but you are subscribed, so I find them OK. I'm an ex-Pat Brit from North Wales who's lived in Germany for nigh on 21yrs now. Started life as a Toolmaker in '72 after leaving school. WE learned the whole gamut but the bulk of my work was in Press Tooling design and make, repairing the ones that customer's busted and the rest of my work was precision components for the aerospace industries, US Military components (HUD's and the like), Geological sampling equipment and Seismological instrumentation. I love your Line-Boring machine, didn't have any such things in my day. It reminded me of a little sideline we stumbled into one Friday just after Lunch, when a guy poked his head round the door and asked if we had anyone capable of repairing a JCB (Excavator) Transfer Gearbox. After some of the other guys made some (slightly mean and unkind) jokes suggesting the words Precision and Toolmaking on the big sign outside, didn't really apply to bulldozers, earth-movers and the like; he was directed to me on one of the Bridgeport's (we also had a monster Gorton V Mill for heavier duty stuffs). Anyway introductions over, I told him to bring the box in and let me take a look. Turned out that one of bearings on one side of this "transfer shaft I think it was called" had seized and spun in the bore and made a right mess. Was a 10" or 12" ball race as I can remember. Anyway, there was enough meat in the housing (Cast Iron) that I decided I could bore it out and fit a sleeve (which the lathe guy (who was also the Foreman) could knock out for us), while I was boring out the damage to accept a sleeve. Anyway, discussed the possibilities with hm and he asked how much it would cost as it was urgent and he needed the machine backup and running tonight. We told him we only do the work, not the pricing, and that he should go and see the boss and he said whatever it costs, if it is on the right side of a grand (that's a thousand UK Pounds), which apparently JCB told him it would cost if he took the machine to them for a new Transfer box casting, bearing and had them do it for him. Ten Minutes later the Boss came into the Toolroom with the chap over to my machine and said he'd agreed to do the job if I said I can do it. So that was all agreed with the Boss, Customer, Lathe guy and myself. Customer then say is there anything he could do to help and my Boss asked him if he knew how to make tea; which of course he did so the Boss said "well Martin normally makes teas for us all (and goes shopping to the grocery shop for cream cakes on a Friday afternoon) but he's gonna be busy with your job, so if you could fill in for him, that would help him to crack out your job quicker; and fair play to the guy he was more than happy to make teas. I showed him the kitchen area and he went round the lads asked what they fancied and off he went to the local shop. He came back with an enormous box of cakes (I think he probably bought everything they had) then said tuck in guys and enjoy, there should be plenty left to take home for your Families too, Please Enjoy! Between the guy on the lathe and I on the Bridgeport, it took a couple of hours to set it up on the Bridgeport and make a stepped bore to accept the new sleeve (which the guy on the lathe was making). We made the stepped bore and sleeve a light interference fit, then heated the casting gently with the Town Gas & Forced air torch from our furnace and slid the sleeve in place. When cooled again, I fitted 8 x H7 blind dowel pins around the bore on the join line to key them together and 4 Allen screws to keep it locked in place. It then went back on my Bridgeport and I bored the insert to accept his new bearings, which I pressed in for him (along with the matching new one for the other side in the good seat. The guy had asked if he could stay with me to watch from the get go, so now he made a celebratory tea for everyone on and came with my Tea and asked me how much he owed me. A bit surprised at this , I said "I thought you agreed it with the boss". I did he said, "I want to know how much I should pay you though ?" I said, "Oh no that's not needed, I'm paid wages by the Boss, you don't need to pay me anything". At this he just dropped £40on my worktable, which I said it's not needed really. He just said split it with your mate over there on the lathe, he made the insert for you. "Please don't insult me trying to give it back, just take your Wives / Girlfriends out for a nice meal this weekend on me, OK! You guy's have saved me from a real disaster today and nearly a thousand pounds too, you deserve it" He Wandered back to the office for 10 mins with the Boss, then waved with a big beaming smile though the window as he left with his repaired transfer box. The Foreman (who made the insert ring on the lathe came over and asked me how much cash he had offered me, I told him £40 which I had to split with him for making the insert ring. He then told me well it's not our money, we are paid wages, so please take it to the boss and explain that the guy insisted leaving money with us. Now I felt embarrassed as maybe he / and / or the Boss might think I had tried to sneak this massive "tip" he left us away. So into the office i went and handed over the 40 and explained about the guy insisting on giving us a "tip" to share between us. At this point the phone rang so I said I'd be back in the Toolroom. Twenty minutes later the Boss came back in and called the Lathe Guy over to my machine and put the £40 back on the table and said I had already agreed a price with him for the time and Materials and he was extremely happy with it and when he paid he dropped this on my desk and put another £20 note on my table and said, so you can add that to the tip he left for you and split it between you. I am happy because we made a nice rush job extra today and he left me some cash to my Wife out to dinner tonight too. You lads did the work and you deserve the tip too between you and Thank You for being such good engineers and great employees. We all did well that day and I being in year 3 of my Apprenticeship, managed to more than double my take home pay that week. The Boss was really decent to us, trusted all implicilty and we all had keys to the works and carte blanche permission, to use the workshop, machines and any scrap offcuts of metal we wanted for any personal projects and to ask if we needed to use any bar stock. I can honestly say hand on Heart, he was one of the best Bosses I ever worked for in my entire life, with no exception. Sorry that was long, I just felt like sharing a nice story. Have to ask though, your dog: does he never get swarf in his paws? When I started one of the two partners had a Yellow Labrador and he came to the works every workday (Mon- Fri) but he never had swarf in his paws - which always amazed me but I suppose their pads are a like shoes are to us.

I said it once and I will say it again, THAT IS ONE SWEET BORING BAR ! Mine does a good job but has no welding capabilities so there are still sometimes tool eating voids full of flux that are just right to tearing up the tip of the tool. I use to get bar damage from chips getting into the threaded tool holes and they got under the bearings making gouges on the bar. I made up simple threaded hardwood plugs held in with some simple rubber cement. Problem solved. Nearly no more surface gouges on the bars. One sweet job Kurtis. Thanks a bunch !

I don't know how I got here, but I watched the whole thing in a sitting. That was engineering of an almost alchemic quality. The sort of engineering that non engineers don't really understand WHY it is so magical. Most of my mates are non engineers and just shake their heads when I rant about all sorts of engineering - they would regard this as very boring and average; "What's so clever about it?" Grrrrr! Beautiful, beautiful work young man, I am so impressed over here in the 'Old Country'.

Been watching a few recently as they have been popping up and I’ve really enjoyed them. Tonight I have subscribed as I had to say goodbye to our staffie this year, we couldn’t go in with him to say goodbye because of COVID-19! But seeing this video has made me smile so much thank you!!!

15+ years ago I did a good bit of these. I did them in the field most of the time. 7018 stick to weld them up then using a much more crude bearing and boring bar setup with a hydraulic drive and manual feed. It worked, but it sure would have been a much more enjoyable job with your setup. Nice work!

Great job, nice set up too. I used to do some line boring, but in iron press frames. The worst thing was having bores so far apart, it was hard to get away from chatter. On the long reaches, if you couldn't support the bar in the middle, you ended up using a dead sharp point, and minimal feed. We didn't bore to any particular size, but bored and honed, then made new bronze bearings to fit.

The three of you are a really good team. Along with some wonderful metal work. Immensely enjoyed, thanks.

I am amazed with this tool its really versatile.

What I find works great for the automated welding up is to start your first rotation with the feed off, then as it gets back to the starting point engage the feed. It does give you a bit of an extra build up at the start but it also eliminates the need to go back and weld the start up by hand. Just a trick I find works for me. I run 3 different sir mechanica machines, ws smaller, 2 and 3

Ive always said earthmoving support trades need a different type of trades person, you cant just grab a welder and he is switched in to earthmoving, or a sparky or a machinist etc. you are a true earthmoving trades person from what i see mate and a pleasure to see the work you churn through. I do have a few questions about the line boring machine: - How does the feed work on a rotating shaft such as in this case? - On the welding lance, how does the wire not get twisted with the roation of the machine? - Why don't you weld up the snapring grooves with the lance and just have it work on that short segment before welding up the entire hole? - When cutting the snapring grooves, how does the feed work? Is the tool extending outward with each rotation when you stop the ring behind the boring head from rotating? If so, how do you get the right depth for the groove with that method? It is a pleasure to learn things from you, thank you very much for your videos!
