What I usually do is just sit behind my drum set and play, just improvise and do what I feel I should be playing.

Linear Patterns? I generally do those as I have a taste for funk... Mike Portnoy because I don't think he's ever written a music sheet for any of the songs he's done with Dream Theater and Chad Smith because it's mostly improvised

Jared, Curious to know how this method is working for you as oppose to the learning a few set patterns that you memorize and link together. Are you getting the high speed results that come from crushing one or two set patterns.
