The Assignment problem is a special case of the Transportation problem. It is used when you need to pair up "things" with other "things" (e.g. workers with jobs, people with other people, machines with operators, etc.), and you want the pairs to be such that they minimize or maximize some measure of performance (e.g. cost or quality of the pairings).
