Line Breeding and Inbreeding Continued. The mechanics of dog breeding and creating a line of dogs (or even a separate dog breed) is explained. This is meant to be educational in nature.
Breeding good dogs is an art and not a science. Yet a breeder needs to breed consistent breed type using the AKC approved standard for each breed. Many people are against any kind of close breeding but that is simply ignorant and the fact that many breeders think this is taboo/incest breeding think of the human taboos against that. But breeds were created in the first place by inbreeding and creating very high quality dogs involves intelligent line breeding. Many genes are polygenic in nature and not individually passed. Some genes are sex linked to the X or Y chromosome. This video explains some of the benefits weighted against the risks of this approach. We will discuss Wright's Coefficient of Inbreeding versus Hardiman's Coefficient in later part of this series.

Great points. I agree. Just like people, natural talent without any skill or training is not useful and at the same token, you can take someone without a talent and teach them in most cases, but will they reach their potential without any talent. Nature vs Nurture, I say the same as you. I do however think that even though nature is very important, without proper training a great dog will not be great. Great information Alex.

Linebreeding increases the odds of homozygous genes. Two alleles at each locus, one from the father and one from the mother. It is designed to be used intelligently and with logic to improve a breed and all carriers of diseases need to be culled. It's impossible to breed only for a single gene. So you must use inbreeding coefficients originally designed as a mathematical formula in the 1920's, to take a measure of risk versus reward in your system. Some genes will be homozygous, and some will be heterozygous.

At 8:20, you said it backwards…a high COI increases homozygousity, not heterozygousity.

I’d very much like to see more on greyhound breeding please. Apparently, clicks, proven links & niches are important in greyhound breeding.

The overall goal was to explain breeding stratgies in general, not specifically about Greyhounds. Breeding strategies are not breed specific. The example was not on Greyhound breeding, but as an example of a breed designed for speed, wherein the speed achieved is the yardstick of who to breed or not to breed. It's an oversimplification but makes the point of how testing has to be combined with breeding in order to make artificial selection work. In 1907, Charles and Gertrude Davenport developed a model for the genetics of eye color. They suggested that brown eye color is always dominant over blue eye color. This would mean that two blue-eyed parents would always produce blue-eyed children, never ones with brown eyes. For most of the past 100 years, this version of eye color genetics has been taught in classrooms around the world. It’s one of the few genetic concepts that adults often recall from their high school or college biology classes. Unfortunately, this model is overly simplistic and incorrect - eye color is actually controlled by several genes, 8 of them. My example was a quick memory thing from my high school biology class, based on what I learned from this 1907 book. Brown is usually dominant over blue and this model of a single genes controlling color was taught in schools when teaching Punnette sqaure. I finished high school in 1985! So my memory is from something I learned almost 40 years ago. One gene, OCA2, controls nearly three-fourths of the blue-brown color spectrum. However, other genes can override the OCA2 instruction, albeit rarely. This multifactorial model for eye color explains most of the genetic factors that influence eye color. I suggest you google the answer, as my explanation was simply meant to show how dominant and recessive genes combined when a single gene is involved. We have since learned in humans, that 8 genes are actually involved.
