Nobody told me about this parallel universe... This is a clip from my playthrough of an older mod made by MelonSpeedruns. I'm a big fan of the castle layout, but I wish it had some custom music.

I was expecting something like just slapping Link into the Mario 64 map but actually recreating the layout of Bob-Omb Battlefield with Ocarina of Time's camera system, textures and models is much more impressive. And I like the way that it adds unique Zelda game mechanics like having to blow up rocks with bombs to make it through. It actually feels like a level that could plausibly exist in Ocarina of Time that feels well designed and playable rather than just superimposing one game on top of another.

Not just that, but the earliest versions of OOT were using paintings to teleport to different locations from within Hyrule Castle. And the old Hyrule Castle dungeon got repurposed as the Forest Temple later in development, retaining the focus on paintings throughout. So even more poetic, it is a return to form both from origins of the engine and from the earliest iterations of the game's development.
@jraug446 ай бұрын
It looks like they based the DS port of SM64 on the OOT engine too, considering the similarities in animations and physics, like how tight the controls are, recoil when punching walls, having to face a ledge to grab it, etc.

This mod is cool because the original concept for Ocarina of Time was going to play out like Super Mario 64 where Link goes to Gannon's Castle and enter paintings that warps him to different parts of Hyrule. The idea later got scrapped when Miyamoto found out that he can create a vast open field with connecting area's with the Nintendo 64 hardware.

@wombatgirl9976 ай бұрын
I love how this isn't just trying to be a one for one remake, it is actually adjusting the maps and challenges to be more compatible with Link's abilities and movement. I'm not sure it would be possible to do everything from Mario 64 this way, but I would love to see someone attempt to expand this out and bring over as much as possible. Probably would work better if Majora's Mask was used, since the Zora mask would be the only way to really do the water levels right.

Back when I was playing OOT for the first time, I was thinking how the graphics looked better than most n64 games, but after years of playing games in that console, I forgot why I thought that. Now, seeing this footage, I remembered why: mario64's grass is just a green blur, but OOT's has more detail and some yellow patches. Plus the trees are 3d on OOT.
@dominicbonogofski5 ай бұрын
Yeah, the trees got an upgrade. But not the leaves. Those are still blurry 2D sprites. Or would it be the branches that are the 2D sprites, since most OoT trees just have branches and no leaves because the trees are just dead apparently?

This is really cool when you consider that Ocarina of Time originally supposed to have the same level progression of Mario 64 with Link jumping into paintings of different areas.
