Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at the first comic featuring the Wasp!

ORIGINAL INFO: Shouldn’t this be Tales to ANTstonish?
RUMINATIONS: It was believed by some that I wouldn't get to the Avengers for a while since I'd want to cover all the ones that appeared in the movies first to give people proper grounding, but of course the comics and the movies are a different story. As such, I realized there was only one founding member I hadn't covered yet: the Wasp.
Unfortunately, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has not been so kind to Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne. While they were still an heroic duo together, at the start of the Ant-Man movie, Janet is lost and presumed dead. It feels kind of disrespectful to a founding Avengers member AND the only female member of the team, at that... and lord knows we kind of need a bit more diversity in the Cinematic Universe considering the significant abundance of white dudes. Hell, since they were going with Scott Lang for the Avengers anyway, why not have it be Janet who teaches him instead of Hank? Just saying, you don't see women mentoring men very much in superhero movies. Even though Hope assisted in his training in the film, she wasn't really a mentor as much as Hank was in it. That isn't to say that the film isn't good, just that since they were already changing how things went that they missed some cool opportunities.

I believe Wasp was created due to Stan Lee wanting more female characters. He always did try to include at least one competent female character. Even if the end result wasn't always exactly perfect.

You know what I have noticed? Rather than a more traditional superhero, Hank Pym fits better as a mad scientist. Mental instabiliy, swearing to "show them all", doing whatever the hell he wants with science just because he can. If it wasn't for Maria, you know that this guy would be building moon lasers and have several underwater bases. That's why I really love Hank. He's a mad scientist that, out of guilt, is trying to be something he isn't, a superhero, and constably screwing things up.

Diego, you’re more right than you know. In Avengers Academy, Hank admits that if he hadn’t become a superhero and joined the Avengers, his depression probably would have gotten the better of him, and he either would have killed himselfo or become a recluse who wasn’t doing anything beneficial to anyone. Heck, the whole “trying to be something he isn’t” is the cause of the whole Yellowjacket fiasco: Hank admitted later that he tried to reinvent himself into an alpha-male type because that’snwhat He thought Janet wanted (missing the fact that she liked him as a nerd) and that fed into his mental breakdown that ended their marriage. Hank really needs a hug.

"Go to the ant, thou dullard" is a King James Bible quote from Proverbs. Still a weird thing to say to Hank Pym, though. Also, some versions of the Bible said "Go to the ant, thou sluggard" instead, so I guess they never double checked? Weirdness.

I looked up Maria Trovaya - apparently, she resurfaced as MODAM, a female MODOK (transformed against her will.) However, Omega Red believed she was someone else called Olinka Barankova. MODAM says that AIM's files on her can't be trusted, which of course isn't a confirmation or denial of any idea of her identity. She ended up trying to fix a hole in reality caused by a Cosmic Cube and vanished to parts unknown.

@@JaelinBezel You see it a lot in old comics and pulp sci-fi. When this comic was written it was a much more well-known turn of phrase. There was even a BBC radio show titled "Beyond Our Ken" running at the time (which was a pun on the lead actor's name). You basically used the phrase to sound ominous and cool.

Yeah, the whole beginning of their relationship is just a parade of red flags. He's an introverted mad scientist who's still mourning his late wife and she's a much more extroverted and much younger woman who just lost her father. Not the greatest recipe for a healthy relationship dynamic.

Sadly, there are scientists who don’t believe in ethics, but pop culture definitely overused the trope. The funny thing is, Hank is one of the few characters where the whole “stoic scientist” thing actually makes sense-at least in regards to Janet’s affection for him, since it’s probably the result of losing Maria. The only other fictional character it makes sense for that I can think of is Reed Richards, since the FF’s personalities were all meant to clash with their powers (ex. Mr. Fantastic is the most flexible man alive with powers well-suited to imagination and artistry, and he’s as boring and stiff-necked as can be). On the other hand, Marvel’s other Hank, The Beast, is delightfully the complete opposite of the stereotype. Not only does he have empathy and morality (devoting his skills to the service of mankind), he has a warm, friendly disposition, a sense of humor, and a love of literature. Ironically, Dr. Doom and Sivanna are a pair of villains who actively buck the trend. Doom has his own vague sense of honor, but both men are shown to devoted to their families in spite of their villainy.

"Hell, since they were going with Scott Lang for the Avengers anyway, why not have it be Janet who teaches him instead of Hank?" - I'm guessing they wanted to go with the theme of fathers and daughters as something to connect Scott to his mentor. Also if you can get Michael Douglas you should want to get a good role for him. I also have a feeling they went with an older generation character since not only is Scott a funnier and kind of a more likeable character (sadly Hank striking Janet is still one of the characters most remembered moments) but it actually makes it feel like a different movie since yeah... if it was just Hank it would be just a total Iron Man rip off. And the next Ant Man movie is going to be Ant Man and the wasp so you are going to get Hope van Dyne as the wasp there. And also based on the first movie and hintings there's a lot of talk about the next Ant Man movie revolving around finding out what happened to Janet. Especially as Michael Douglas wanted his actual wife, Catherinze Zeta Jones to play Janet so you know that could actually happen. And also though I have my issues with the Ant Man movie and even the romantic spur out of nowhere relationship between Scott and Hope... wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better handled then how the 60's did it that's for sure.

I agree with TheWolverine. Hank made a great mentor figure, and it let them flesh out the universe a little more, revealing there had been superheroes active between Captain America’s disappearance and Tony Stark building his first suit. Also, Scott has a more interesting angle as a thief seeking redemption, though I suspect part of the reason MCU decided to jump straight to him was to avoid any potential controversy over the dumb “hitting Janet” thing (which, fun fact, was not in the writer’s original plans for that storyline).

There's a Contract of Smoke, I believe, that could allow him to change size, could be either a Beast Skitterskulk for ant sympathy or an Ogre Gargantuan for more size shifting powers (of the upwards variety). In the creation of the Wasp, I believe that it is one of the earliest examples of Rule 63.

22:00 I'm sorry, but that pannel is killing me. You have a giant green monster with random 'kill you if you look at it' powers..."QUICK! GET THE SHOTGUN!" Even out of context, it's like if little Billy used his magnifying glass to burn one too many ants & now the ants, ARE FIGHTING BACK!

While I'll defend Stan Lee for all the great work he's done, (both as a writer and a person) ... I have to admit, this origin for the Wasp is kind of underwhelming. Given Linkara's stance on feminism, I'm kind of shocked he didn't say "This comic sucks" seeing as how Janet Van Dyne is mostly here to prop up Hank Pym and doesn't do much aside from being recused. Unlike what the cover suggests where she saves Hank; would have liked to see that. To be fair the Wasp would contribute much more later on and become a hero in her own right.

It is just indicating she is his 1) Gorgeous 2) New (both adjectives) partner-in-peril. That is perfectly correct, it is just less common to see used if you are going with less than three adjectives. However, due to the chaotic madness that is English grammar, no comma is *also* perfectly correct there.

I don't know, goo.gl/images/lCs9MO seems like a pretty good color match for a wasp to me. Thinking all wasps have the same color scheme is just silly. There are over 30,000 identified species and an estimated 100,000 species total. There is only one species of domesticated dog yet you don't question the visual differences there.

Ken means knowledge. It's not exactly archaic, but nor is it widely used (except, oddly enough, in Scotland). On edit: I see someone has already explained it. That was beyond my ken at that the time of posting.

I actually think it's pretty cool that, to create the new Wasp, Marvel went back and used something that only appeared in the debut comic of the original Wasp. It's nifty. :)

"Go to the ant, thou sluggard" is a proverb of Solomon, from the Bible. I don't know why Maria said "dullard" instead. I guess because poor literacy...is more prevalent than you first realized.
