Heya folks, hope ya'll doing well. This one took really long as I have never attempted something like this before. Here are the lyrics, courtesy of Daniele :
(initium est) una res, qua de causa ignoro,
nihil interest quam enixe conor,
tecum recoli, oro, versibus laboro
ut doceam sine mora (quaequae scio.)
Aetaem, caram rem illam,
specto volantem dum acqua destillat,
specto numerantem retro ad finem diei,
acqua stillat vitam, (non est verum.)
non aspexi subter,
a fenestra specto aetatem euntem,
conans tenere, ne scivi quidem
me omnia perdidisse (ut abeas.)
Tenui omnia meo corde,
tametsi conatus, omnia perdidi.
Id quantum valui memoria erit
praeteriti temporis cum
[rit.] enixe conatus et feliciter gessi
sed extremo nihil interest,
mi perendum ut omnia perdam
sed extremo nihil interest
una res, qua de causa ignoro,
nihil interest quam enixe conor,
tecum recoli, oro, versibus laboro
ut me doceam enixe (conatum.)
Tamenetsi tunc me irridebat,
agens ut eram tua res privata,
si cogito quantum pugnavissemus,
miror quod bene (gestum sit.)
Omnia omnino mutata sint,
iam me ipsum non agnoveris,
ne tunc quidem me noscebas
sed omnia perduntur (extremo.)
Tenuisti omnia corde,
tametsi conatus, omnia perdidi.
Id quantum valui memoria erit
praeteriti temporis cum
[rit.] enixe conatus et feliciter gessi
sed extremo nihil interest,
mi perendum ut omnia perdam
sed extremo nihil interest
Confisus sum tibi,
quam enixe conatus,
toto huic
solum hoc tibi sciendum est [x2]

No one is talking about how the lyrics were changes to reflect roman water clocks, where it the dripping of water was used to see time elapsed! That's an incredible detail

@@Draco-oi9bbOne of the original lyrics is "Time is a valuable thing/watch it fly by as the pendulum swings". Romans didn't use pendulum clocks (hadn't been invented yet) but clocks where the flow of water was used to mark the passage of time. So he changed the lyrics to "watch it fly by as the water drips".

LITERALLY HAD THIS CONVERSATION WITH MY GF TONIGHT. I was running a game of D&D for a new group, and I have a lot of bardcore covers in the ancient languages (there are a LOT out there) because it's familiar enough to get recognized, and that's funny, but it's also aesthetically pleasing to have in my fantasy game. No, actually. It rhymes too well. Latin flowed a little too easily with how many words ended in the same way, so Poetic skill was placed in finding ways to make things not rhyme, while still getting the image across. This made me cry because it reminded me of a friend of mine who loved Latin who chose to end her life almost three weeks ago and that song describe how I feel and how I think she felt in the end. Edit from 24/08/2023: my old phone died yesterday and with it I lost the text conversation we had and that I kept. It’s like losing her once again. I don’t have anything physical that links me to her. I only have memories and I fear that they’ll fade with time.

I'm sorry for your loss. Songs stay sung. "Every life is a brief bright spark, while some may curse the dark and mourn the flame, the things they showed us still remain." -Zoe Mulford "Songs Stay Sung" has helped me through much mourning. I wish you fairer seas to come, bright Stardust.

What an absolutely fantastic little song. One thing I noticed after going through some of your other work is how much more confident your voice is while singing it. It projects so much nicer and really takes its place in the music. Not that it was ever bad! Just it's nice to really feel like the vocals are shining as much as they should, you have an amazing voice and it works so well.
