Linkin Park have been in business for almost twenty years - one of the best-selling bands of the decade. Ken "Pooch" Van Druten at the Front of House and Vic Wagner as Systech create the Wall of Sound live.
The sound reinforcement system is a VTX system from JBL. Pooch and Vic are satisfied with the equipment, they don't need a delay line and praise the distortion-free reproduction even at high sound pressure levels.

A bachelor degree in electrical engineering is really all you need to understand most of what he is saying, but to really do the same job as him you will definitely need a master's degree in acoustics or similar and some experience with concerts.

Multi purpose arenas are usually horrible for acoustics for live concerts . Especially these newer arenas they are all built the same ive been doing this a long time i know all the arenas past/ present. There were very few multi purpose venues that had good acoustics. (1) Buffalo Memorial Auditorium located in Buffalo New York built for the nhl hockey team was the best!!! It was a old arena built in the 1940s ?? They had these giant cylinder shaped sound baffles that hung from the arena rafters that would sway to absorb the reverberation. It was the only arena I ever worked that had this feature I don't think that arena is still standing? But as far as newer current arena I would say the rose garden located in Portland Oregon built for the nba Portland trailblazers it has pretty good acoustics that can be adjusted probably the best venue in North America for sound.

1:55 Interesting that flown subs are effective. I would have thought that at those frequencies, the reaction force from the produced sound would cause the array to shake in the air, lessening the output. I guess this shows that the audiophile crowd that mounts their living room speakers on spikes to anchor them to the floor (to avoid exactly this effect) is barking (woofing? :-) up the wrong tree...
@billyb6001
@billyb6001 4 жыл бұрын
It does make it less powerful in the air but it's more even because you arent coupling with the resonant frequencies in the floor.

I think that it has much to do with their poor room acoustics than speaker placement. Never heard of barking effect, what is it?

It doesn’t matter when you have 12 Double 18” 4000watt subs, per side, plus ground stacked subs. Completely different than a home setup

I’ve heard those VTX S28 subs in real life. The sports arena in our city has them as the subwoofers for their “in-house” sound system. They seem to dig really deep, and have a good amount of power! I’ve heard some good JBL subs, and some really terrible ones. These are the best. The g28s on the ground are a good idea, because I’ve been dissatisfied with every system I’ve heard without subs in the center. They always seem to sound good directly in the center, but have a nasty dead spot a few degrees to the left and right. They always sound decent further off to the side. As for the VTX sound quality, I feel like they are only good for certain genres, but this genre would be a PERFECT fit for them.

there's no shame in having a PA in your home. but I suggest you to invest a good point source system. it will probably sound better in your home. my friend has a 4KW PA in his bandroom just for listening music. having 18 inch subs in your apartment is pretty funky. note that a good studio monitors will probably sound better than big PA in your home. and PA will suck a lot of electicity.

So interesting how different this stuff is compared to home audio solutions. In a home you would never want a subwoofer on a shelf or at any higher than the floor because your bass response isn't as good. Here you see subs hanging from the ceiling lol. And all that is cared about is how loud it can get or how big of a area it can cover vs at home you are concerned with getting the most accurate sound reproduction
@jonniprasad
@jonniprasad 7 жыл бұрын
Tech Metal accurate reproduction and intelligibility is what they care about most. It is just a different acoustic environment to a home environment that they need to use different methods to achieve their goal. There is a lot of planning, design and physics involved in what they do
@Thetimrobertson
@Thetimrobertson 7 жыл бұрын
The method of hanging subs is used for pattern control. The longer the array the better pattern control over low frequencies. Subs become more directional as a function of the length of the array. That is why they hang them, to give directional control over subs in to seats further away. The ground subs are used to take care of the floor level. In theory the ground floor will not actually hear the flown subs just like they are not hearing the top speakers in the array only those that are pointing at them. Bass response is not as good when flown true but when you have that many subs the lack of ground plane coupling can be overcome. This is not a system that lacks headroom believe me. Full range freq response to every seat is the goal and if you think a home system can outperform the sub performance of a system of this type I urge you to go to a well set up show such as this and compare. Large wavelengths (low frequencies) need large spaces.

@@jonniprasad just knowing the T60 for a complex recint like that, so many surfaces, materials... Even with software, the amount of calculus for those shows is scary. I'm on my 2nd year of live sound and maybe I better keep on music playing than getting to much into engineering, because not many people can manage the planning of a system like this one.

zylcho What don't you like about line source in large venues? Also, regarding your comment on the Wildwood Beach, the system tech works for the tour's audio vendor, not directly for the band like the FOH mixer. If it was a one off gig, it most likely would have been a local production company- probably Spellcaster, Bauder, Asbury Audio, etc, which provide their own system techs.

That said, the management of such a system also depends on the Sound Engineer and again, the technical team whose Chief Sound Engineer was of a very high level. In any case the sound can not be like in your private living room, and it all depends on where you were in the room, the huge room...
