Our fourth dive in the Atlantic Ocean, near Madeira island in Portugal, quite close to Funchal.
Dive Club - Madeira Dive Point
Dive type - boat dive on reef
Dive Site - T-reef
Max depth - 30,5 m
Bottom temperature - 23 C
Air temperature - 27 C
Equipment - GoPro 10, lights sofirn sd05.
This dive we went in a big group of people, and conditions were not very comfy due to quite strong current that could easily carry divers far from the dive spot. We were able to explore rocks only from one side, but saw a lot for of moray eels hiding between stones.
Fun fact, to get to dive boat we had to jump into the water from the pier fully equipped, and swam to it, boarded, and then floated in the waves to the dive spot. After each dive we returned back, changed tanks on land and prepared for the next trip, rested for some time, and then repeated all the way to the boat.
T-reef is presented with two imposing Rock formations spiral up to 12 m towards the water surface from a depth of 30m. Free-standing and surrounded by blue water, they provide shelter for all kinds of reef dwellers such as Atlantic monkfish, wrasse, including large hogfish, neon damselflies, sea peacocks, etc.
Predators such as barracudas and spiny mackerels circle the rocky formations in the hope of finding prey. The “T-Reef” with its two jagged volcanic cones offers so many hiding places for countless species of moray eels that the underwater photographer is spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting the right subject.
