Hi Justine. I just finished watching Making It season 2, and you WON! Congrats! You were my favourite contestant all the way through. I loved watching you create things and your interactions with Nick and Amy, and just your special personality too. Great vid! The prints and the block look AMAZING! You make it look so easy, and I can't believe how good the results are. I hope you continue making videos, as I will be watching them all from now on. Greetings from Australia 👋 🙂

Hey Justine, great video! I'm wanting to do a little project for Christmas and found my way here. I like how simple your setup is. What is the tool you use to press the paper onto the ink? I have been seeing people say to use a wooden spoon, but that looks a little nicer! :D

Can I ask what kind of tape you use to hold the tracing paper in place? The way I do it is I kind of try to keep it aligned and check it's all good every so often.

I was in an art and hobby shop today saw some lino and went looking for a video on the process. It seems really straight forward, I love your style for this print. Is it generally always a single colour for block printing or do people ever layer up separate blocks?

I am also a block printer! commonly it is one colour since it is easy and clean, but you can also do something called a reduction lino, where you carve out all of one colour and then carve more for the next colour, so on and so forth. I find reduction lino really beautiful and fun, but you will need to make multiple copies of prints as once you are done with a colour layer there is no going back. Lino is super fun and I totally recommend it!

hey thank you for the video. Your second print looks really good. I just got into linocut printmaking. I wondering if you could share some tips on making the ink look opaque and evened out on paper. I rolled the ink on the lino, it looks even out on the lino, but when i transferred on paper ( i used a metal spoon to press the paper) the ink ended up very patchy. Do I have to purchase a press or a baren? thank you ! Best, Nanxi
@JustineSilva
@JustineSilva 2 жыл бұрын
Printing by hand takes a lot of experimenting! I think I show two prints in the video, but I had several test prints (on cheaper paper). When you spread the ink on your inking surface, look for a "toothy" texture (4:07 in the video) - that's how you know it's ready ink the block. If you're having issues with the ink drying on the block before you're able to print, try using a spray bottle to LIGHTLY mist it while it's on your inking surface & working the water in with your roller. (NOTE: this will only work if you're using a water based ink - NOT oil). Printing by hand is kind of about finding that sweet spot of just enough ink, but not so much that it squishes out when you press. So keep experimenting and try to enjoy the process! :)

Unfortunately, I purchased the gray color as I thought the pink would be too soft. I have been an artist all my life and I am 79. I guess I will have to get a lighter color but I wondered if the pink might not hold up so well. I have been using the grey to practice so far. I am going to find some black carbon paper as mine is grey. maybe that would work.

I’m no expert but I believe they last a very long time. But the more they age they harder it is to carve. In Highschool art classes it was always so hard and tough but that’s because it’s very old. I’m short~ they can last along time but the newer the easier to carve. Not sure how long it takes for them to harden though. Hope that helped
@carlsjpg9609
@carlsjpg9609 2 жыл бұрын
short answer is a very long time, the long answer is that you can use them to print until they start to crumble and not pull the print how you want any more, or when you are done your edition whichever comes first! Lino does tend to get hard especially in the cold, my professors have recommended putting it in the oven as low as it can go for a few minutes or even a hairdryer to help soften for carving. (I'm a printmaker specializing in lino)
@JustineSilva
@JustineSilva 2 жыл бұрын
I think they last for a while, but I agree with carlsjpg - you can warm them up in the oven (I've even heard of an iron on the lowest setting). If you're just getting started though, I'd recommend getting the pink EZ cut blocks. They're not as hard to carve and they come in a bunch of sizes. I dropped a link in the bio so you know what they look like.

Weird random question - could you print onto a perfectly round piece of wood, by rolling it slowly over the carved block?
@JustineSilva
@JustineSilva Жыл бұрын
It depends on your set up. If you sand the wood to be super smooth, you may be able to get a pretty decent print. If you do try this out, I'd highly suggest working with EZ cut (it's pink and much squishier than the block I used in this vid), I think you'd have a better shot at a clean transfer. Good luck!
