Mutamba Wakuva means the Mutamba (tree) has no fruits. It is an old Mbira song that has been played for many generations, and is played in spiritual ceremonies.
In Zimbabwean language, Shona, Mutamba is a tree, of which matamba are the fruits. People in countryside areas are used to these trees providing fruits, especially in the dry seasons. In the song, there are no matamba fruits on the tree.
The song says that the dryness of the Mutamba tree is a parable. Parents are dead, mother, father, grandparents, what are you going to do, what are you going to eat now.
A lion was so starving that it ate its own child. This is also a parable, for example, when kids have no one to look after them, and no help, thats when they may become thieves, its not their nature, but they are stuck.
The song talks also about an important family member, someone who takes care and supports the rest of their family. If that person goes, then the whole family is in trouble.
The song is also a prayer, for those who are in such difficult situations. When people are poor and have no one to help them, but they still pray to their Lord and good spirits, they will be looked after.
The song is also calling on names of Lion spirits, telling these great spirits of the problems being faced, and praying for guidance for those who are suffering.
