The original comment on the WAN show stream came from a merch message, so basically just any random person who bought something through the LTT store and left a message. I've also got no idea who the commenter is referring to with regards to these "smaller tech channels", possible they just made it up and it's just that one persons opinion. Regardless, you're spot on, anyone complaining that LTT is the cause of them not succeeding clearly has no clue. Same sort of people who blame the "algorithm" for their problems rather than making better content. The problem isn't everything else, just gotta look at what you can do better 💯

I think it's always difficult if you're entering a social media platform with the intent of building a channel as a business. These old tech channels like you said, the MKBHD, Linus etc started doing this more than a decade ago, when it was more about making content about what interested you versus intent on developing a viable business model. MKBHD was essentially a kid when he started for some real perspective. Then we fast-forward to the 2020s, where everyone is trying to go "viral" which isn't a guarantee when 100s of people are making content on the same subject especially tech which is a far smaller community than people think.

Tech channels as a whole are going through changes. The smartphone era use to bring so many views, but that’s no longer the case. You can still do that, but you have to start reviewing other things like electric cars, home automation, etc. Even MKBHD had to adjust.

Travis! Last time I talked to you was in the max program with vidiq. Man, I was contemplating starting a tech channel as my second channel but after some thought I decided against it. It would have been talking about SolarWinds. The monitoring software company that everyone found out about when they got hacked. I’m part of a small group of people actually certified in their software and worked for a company for a few years in the past so I have great deal of experience to talk about it and teach others. But tech channels… there are so many of them I feel like it would be hard for me to build momentum there. So I decided instead to continue growing my current channel first and make something of it then revisit the second channel idea. By the way it was due to your help and the rest of the max group that I got so immersed in this KZfaq thing. Been running my channel for over a year now and loving it even if the growth momentum is still very slow. But slow and steady ultimately wins the race! Great video man!

I barely try on my channel and after hitting past 8k subs while only posting every other month I realized the biggest secret of KZfaq: 1. People follow YOU the person before they follow the topic of discussion. 2. The harder you TRY for views, the more you WON'T get views.

KZfaq search results are also a mess. Half the page is unrelated to my queries, the other half - 1st few results I might add - only show the most viral channels relating to my query. Half the time the latest videos don't show up in the results, and other times, channels that have little to no viewership, don't show up at all. It's like big tech trying to ban Tiktok because it has a more relevant, user-centric, and effective algorithm, but none of these companies want to do anything to change theirs - they still think whatever they're doing status quo, is right.

Hey Travis, like Linus, I'm a Canadian coming here to do work for free is not illegal. It just requires the proper paperwork. First, you would have to show your intent that you were hired by them to be able to work in their building for even a few days. Having said that, a collaboration like he's done with iJustine and others would have been a better way to accomplish the same thing. You could have gone up or he could have gone down to you and you guys could have had a collab about the tech. You two business kind of like his wan show. Either way, glad you found something you're passionate about. Keep the creativity up. I enjoy watching your content

I tried to do the "Big News" tech stuff. But it was clear that I wasn't really that interested in that. I prefer doing my own thing, and though it may not rake in tons of views, I'm more comfortable about doing videos about stuff I find interesting. It might not the next big phone, but everyone else is doing that, so I thought I would explore things that don't get the coverage.

I don’t think LTT or anyone else is the problem. Usually the people that complain are the ones with 3-4 videos released 12 weeks apart. I think more than anything for pc building and review part of tech KZfaq was the human malware and ensuing parts availability which caused a lot of people to leave the hobby. Things are still recovering there too.

It’s the same with pretty much every area. Sometimes there are many reasons that may not be the fault of the unsuccessful person. But unless the successful person is doing something like bribery or slander, the successful person is never the blame for others lack of success. Even if the boss is overlooking you, don’t blame the successful person. Blame the boss. Likewise, If the algorithm is largely responsible for a creator’s lack of success. Blame the person that designed the algorithm. Don’t blame the successful person

Travis because of the click bait title it showed up in my feed. I started going through your older videos and they are good. I am not a creator nor pretend to be. I think what some may feel is not LTT fault but is really KZfaq fault for not even putting smaller creators on the same recommendation first screen as larger ones. You are still 100% right but also feel the back door voodoo magic of what youtube thinks is relevant vs what is reality sometimes comes into play.

Success is so subjective anyway, I’m still struggling to build a solid viewership on my tech channel. A lot of people might wonder why I bother. But at the same time I actually landed a regular job in multimedia because of the skills I’ve learnt making KZfaq videos. If you stay accountable to yourself and no-one else, it’s incredible how much you can develop, even if you don’t get the views you’d hope for. At the same time I do often wonder whether I should start a channel in another niche to see how I got on. Maybe my videos would suit another audience better than the one I’m talking to right now.
@Xmetalfanx

agreed with so much of this JUST a minute into the video ... sometimes the smallest most (in some cases) annoying crowds are "the loudest". I am seeing different content creators getting burnt out (NOT just tech channels) that branch out creatively to do other channels and in their own words are SO MUCH HAPPIER. I think (my comment to content creators) one issue is that YT is so big and i am subbed so many channels. i can only watch so many videos at a certain time. I know "how is my video i just uploaded doing view wise?" is a question ... but sometimes i am "oh i will go back and watch that video later" ... sometimes i do but SOMETIMES I forget ... its not about the creator, or the content being boring or whatever ... I know SOME creators feel that, that is the reason for videos not doing well sometimes.

There is some merit to this claim. Large mega channels will often cause the Parent company, in this case KZfaq to alter, reduce the payouts. Being a mega streamer you loose a small amount of profit, but being a small fry, any amount of profit loss hurts the channel more. This isn't the mega KZfaq streamers fault, and they shouldn't be blamed.

I haven’t watched video yet but any one attacking Linus instead of the psychopaths at KZfaq is completely misguided in their anger. “Linus has been doing this forever” Exactly, people need to recognize the fact that Linus was a pioneer. He has a huge competitive advantage based on the fact that he has a big head start since he was making this content very early on. Early adopter advantage. And in that many years he has maintained his humility and hasn’t done something catastrophically stupid like so many other KZfaqrs that were at the top and fell from grace.

Marques made a video reflecting on the color of his skin for example. the only reason why he did that though is because someone else already started that topic. it's ONLY calculated. only when his professional mind knows it will do well he will do it, it's not really about caring about something. i mean i shared my experience in the comments on that video. that i have never been able to achieve ANYTHING because i'm a transgender / non ninary person (and i'm almost 38 now) if Marques is genuinely complaining while having over 16 million subscribers at the age of 29, he would for sure NOT have been able to deal with not having achieved ANYTHING at the age of 38. but do you think he will EVER reply on my story in the comments, or do you think he will ever come back on it in another video ? no ofcourse he will never do that. the only thing he cares about is getting ever more subscribers, not about making a real good change in the world.

I always tell myself, people were here before me. No matter what space it is. So I respect that. But I think a lot of these young kids, don't appreciate that creators like Linus put in the work for years. They didn't just spawn. Sorry for rambling, but I see it happening in other areas of life too. Good video

I used to watch the usual popular tech channels religiously, but then several things happened that made me lose interest. I'm not saying this applies to everyone, but it did for me. 1) ... Starting with the GPU mining BS, prices got stupid expensive, then just kept going. Since my ability to buy any tech ever again was basically terminated permanently, I just didn't see the point of bothering to keep up with developments. Why torture myself? This has still not changed, and continues to get worse. 2) ... Tech got boring. Really, really boring. Basically nothing of any interest has happened in years. There's just nothing to talk about any more, other than stupid prices. 3) ... Certain tech channels changed from being good, to just OK, to plain weird or actually annoying. IMO LTT is just pure cringe now, and some of Linus's twisted opinions actually make me angry (e.g. claiming that people who use ad blockers are "pirates", as just one of many, many examples). At this point I actually block a lot of tech content, because it's more than just boring, it puts me in a bad mood just looking at the thumbnail. In my boredom and frustration, I started exploring other content, looking for something more upbeat, and less cringe and preachy. Sadly none of it is on KZfaq. I now spend 99% of my online time on Twitch, and the only reason I even bother logging in to KZfaq is for the Twitch VOD clips that fans post here.

The KZfaq tech space is saturated, thus only the most prominent trusted longevity KZfaqr’s will be watched. This is the natural progression. How many people do iPhone MacBook reviews? Hundreds or maybe thousands, you can’t expect to break into the top 10 when established veteran KZfaqr’s already cornered it. It’s all good, there’s always something different people are looking for. Maybe tweak your channel and find that niche subject and focus on it because most likely the big guys aren’t doing that!!

Linus has good videos . But , idk if it’s always the case of “ if you are better you get the most views “. Like I moved away from watching a lot of Tech YT. I am watching mostly Tolkien YT and there are decent channels and there are epic channels . The fun part is , those that make superficial videos that are not super lore accurate ( make mistakes in interpretations , mix things up ) but make them more newbie friendly ( chew the info up for those too lazy to read Tolkien ) get more views ( sadly ). On top of it same channels did a little bit of paid shilling for Amazon and their channel got promoted by a multibillion dollar company . While the ACTUAL good channels that do super deep dive lore digging absolute bliss analyzes for anyone who enjoys thinking and reading on the topic , who neither bashed nor shilled for Amazon’s recent nonsense on the topic - get mind boggling low viewership . It’s like quality over quantity , most consumers are just lazy and dumb , imo.

While I agree with the sentiment of the video in general, I think it’s equally as cringe to offer yourself up as an unpaid intern, legal or not. I think it’s equally as cringe to be so caught up in what other people are doing that you start asking them how to be a youtuber. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy this channel or any tech channel in particular, I find valuable information from several tech KZfaqrs, but I don’t click on someone’s KZfaq video to see content that is just echoing someone else’s style or information. No hate on this channel or anyone’s, just be yourself and put out content you’re satisfied with and passionate about. And actually try. Think most people coming into this as a way to make easy money have the wrong mindset. It’s definitely possible, but for most careers, you should just try to do what you enjoy. That should be the goal.

If it was from anyone else, I'd have called it bullshit. But coming from you, I get it. And that story of willing to intern for Linus & Co.....truth. I think, honestly, YOU'RE the current example of what o do when your fledgling Tuber career stalls. Keep it up man. ✊🏾

Great video (why the clickbait title, though?). I agree with the gist of what you're saying, I'll just add that sometimes you can do great content and yet not have a lot of viewers due to bad luck, joining the party too late, or both. I mean, think about it: when people like Linus started doing KZfaq videos as their business (i.e. as their "daytime job"), they were pioneers. They had to figure out on their own stuff that newer KZfaqrs don't have to figure out (because they've figured it out for them). On the flip side, their product was much more needed than that of any new tech channel these days, because, back then, there weren't (m)any tech channels on KZfaq, especially not professional ones. So, they had an advantage in getting viewership and, those tech channels - like Linus's, Mr. Morbile etc. - that survive 'till today have done a very good job. So, anyway, it's true that the soil is now much less receptive to new seeds, but... It's most definitely not the fault of those farmers that planted their seed when nobody else thought of it as a viable business...

I agree, for the most part its hard being a microscopic channel like mine, but i will be the first channel to go from 1000 subs to -10.

I have to respectfully disagree with you. I made a fantastic video that should have millions... no billions of views and LTT *DESTROYED* any hopes of it getting views. I was so very proud of it. I put so much of my blood, sweat and tears in it just to have LTT bring their soul crushing destruction to it. I had to concede and gave up. My first and only video is still up and still being mercilessly destroyed my LTT.

There are only SO many tech KZfaq channels I'm willing to subscribe to. At some point it becomes redundant and you're just subscribed to multiple channels talking about the same thing, so you only stay subscribed to/watch the channels that were doing it first. That’s how the market works. Oversaturation.

Or some content providers have no sense of humor or have annoying voices, or get so far into the tech weeds it gets boring, so I stay with the ones that give info with a twist and some humor and ditch the others -- life is too short and my time is valuable to me -- and I'm talking about far more than just tech channels. How many recipes for boiling eggs, or a review of the same "new" gun can a guy sit through?

Although this was clickbait, I totally agree. At some point, you have to take accountability for your own actions. On another note, I want to thank you for your video on how you should have asked people to like, comment, and subscribe sooner and you would have had more followers. I'm in the service industry where surveys are sent to the customers that worked with. When I close out my tickets, instead of like comment and subscribe, I asked them if they would kindly fill out the surveys and it's been working. Not everyone does it but more people do and it has helped during reviews and wage negotiations. So thank you again.
