Around every corner, it feels like people are trying to scam you out of your money. But no one tries harder than audio companies. No I'm not talking about, Apple, Sony, Sennheiser or Samsung. I'm not even talking about hi-fi audio companies like Marantz, Bang and Olafson or Adam Audio. I'm talking about the shady companies that exist in the world of audiophile tweaks. The companies that use science-y sounding words to rip you off. So we got our audio aficionado friend Dankpods to come over and join us while we take a look at some of the craziest BS we've ever seen on this channel.

Be aware that some of the "quantum" stickers have thorium dioxide in the adhesive, so they may be mildly radioactive. As a precaution, wash your hands after handling them as ingesting alpha emitter material is not a good health thing. The ones I checked out that are sold to protect special people from their phone's 5G death beams were radioactive. That phat resistor in the power conditioner thing is a resistive dropper. So the case should get reassuringly warm in use. (It's the cheapest way to run the LED flasher from the mains.)

So many highlights in this episode: - Dan teetering on the edge of losing his s**t until the burn-in comment, at which point he couldn’t contain himself anymore. - Linus just realising that each product will have cost him sooo much money for utter audiophile BS. Good thing he set a limit! - Wade’s “kid in a sweet shop” joy for each new piece of utter crap, knowing that it is going to wind up Dan and Linus… - Adam’s sarcastic sale’s pitch for each product, and his glee when revealing the price. - Everyone’s willingness to call out this audiophile rubbish, and joy when taking it apart to prove that it does NOTHING!!!! Great episode, please can we have more of these collaborations 👏👏👏

@@super9mega they literally bought a Nordost Qwave which is specifically meant to be used in conjunction with their powerboards which removes noise from the wall. But my main point is they also didn't and weren't going to hear much of a change because their system isn't in the price category for these items, its like trying to put f1 tires on a $10 shitbox car, of course you're not going to notice a difference!

@@mousetrap7005 like, you are not serious right? They had The Oscilloscope photos from before and after the "power noise reducer" and saw literally nothing different. If there is a noise difference, then your correct, literally anything, ANYTHING would make more of a difference than it. Meaning that yea, it actually does not make a difference 😆. (Although some ups's can fix dirty power, if you're having an issue with that. But that's mostly like, if you're dealing with that, then this device will probably not help, and you need cleaner power in general)

Burn-in isn't absolutely hogwash. I make electronic test equipment for measuring photodiodes and they have to be burned in due to the extreme sensitivity of the measurements. I'm using a Keithley 237 Source-Measure Unit and applying a few hundred volts and watching the current. It'll drop from ~1's of µAs to sub nAs. No one has been able to explain exactly whats going on, but the supposition is that contaminants are getting migrated or its something to do with surface charge. It definitely helps to heat it up in an oven while you're doing it. I dont think any of this would ever be noticeable in audio equipment, but there is evidence of burn-in being real. I spent a lot of money on my headphones and when I first got them I was ready to send them back immediately, but I played metal at 150% comfortable listening levels for like 24 hours and it made an absolute difference. I figure its probably from the foam fatiguing to be a little more compliant or maybe even some "deburring" if you will, and I'm sure you wont.

Lot of 'engineers' like 2 pretend nothing matters but what they specialize in, 2 try & avoid appearing stupid, like they have the key 2 'hi-fi', like pretending 'speaker cables don't matter' & stuff, which is insane. & no, not necessarily just a resistance thing. Some of the best R 'mainframe twisted SCSI cables' & gray/red combo 'lamp wire' (whatever that stuff is where 1 lead is gray & the other copper = 'evens things out' = sounds BS until U hear it). Another is the best 'coax' is the thin flimsy 'trash' stuff = more 'transparent'. Less capacitance or something? iDunno = not an engineer, but lot of cables do sound different & more expensive doesn't mean better. Same goes with headphones 4 sure = several years iSpent trying out 'everything' & the best overall (currently) turned out 2 retail around $15 LOL

14:04 "That's like having a burn-in time on your tap" Well, actually -- 🤓 Yes I'm aware I'm likely to get slaughtered with nerd emojis, but my grandfather actually works in plumbing, and any time he would replace our well filters or run delimer through the heater, we'd have to run all the taps for 2 or 3 minutes to flush out the old water and potential leftover chemicals so that fresh water would come through the next time we had to shower or something. Burn-in on audio is a myth though, speakers are not motors or batteries and will run pretty much the same whether their new or old or in different environments.

Being a half bridge rectifier means the IC is only powered half the time and they probably use that as part of the count. It also allows them to save an insurmountable amount of money in two more diodes :|

I worked in a local old-school stereo store for almost 20 years. Owned by a great man, conscientious and customer-service oriented. He built an anechoic room in one of our locations, outfitted with the then-current measurement gear so we could perform our own measurements. Just that alone was an eye-opener compared to what the manufacturers were claiming. We carried many brands from 3 figure price tags to 6 figures. I also worked with an equally amazing service tech. The BS from OEMs was off the chart back then too. I was there when we got our first retail CD player. Thanks for showing how much hype and nonsense is still going on with these a-holes selling this garbage. When it comes to stereo/audio equipment, it doesn't stop with these doo-dads either...great work guys!

17:58 I’ve used other earplug-like products from Flare, their Calmer line, and they’re actually very helpful for my sensory processing disorder! A subtler earplug is a godsend when your brain processes everyday environments as too loud, but you can’t use traditional earplugs, because you still need to hear other people well enough to talk to them. Going to the grocery store is so much more tolerable with these (or similar products, like Loop). That being said, you guys are right, these are complete nonsense for audio. I’ve tried them with my decent-quality headphones, and they just make me hear less of the music. It sucks. I get a better listening experience by taking them out and just turning the volume down. Music/audio is the only part of life where I get to control the volume (even at concerts, I can just wear normal earplugs), so I only find these useful for situations that are completely unrelated to audio listening. I would put Flare’s products in the same category as many As Seen On TV things - a useful accessibility tool for some people, and nonsense for everyone else.

The funny thing about those cable lifters, is that the best cables available are coaxial cables, which surround the conductor with a grounded sheath to completely stop any electromagnetic fields from getting in or out. This gives coax near ideal properties from DC all the way up to the microwave range, and they get used in everything from WiFi cards to state-of-the art scientific equipment. When coax is not possible, the next best thing is to place the two conductor as close to each other as possible, ideally twisting them like with Ethernet cables. Having the two conductors far apart like the expensive "flat cable" is the worst thing you could possibly do, that's you build an antenna.

"Hyperaudiophilia" can be a serious mental condition. It occurs when an audiophile (hi-fi enthusiast, nothing wrong with that) achieves a level of sound quality that can not be significantly improved, but feels compelled to continue trying to do so at any cost. It's a form of addiction and can cause otherwise intelligent, rational individuals to be taken in by what others clearly see as nonsensical claims related to sham products. Such products tend to be extremely expensive and, generally speaking, do nothing at all.

“This should be illegal” It is, under the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act. These companies get away with it because they’re so small, rarely have any actual legal presence in a given country, and are only enforced when people complain to the relivent authority. In LTT’s case, that’d be the Competition Bureau’s Deceptive Marketing Practices Directorate. For those quantum stickers, if they are in fact radioactive, reporting them to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission would be smart. Such “frivolous” uses of radioactive materials are very, very illegal.
