I don't get where people get the idea that people do not get coverage in the US, i went to a hospital recently and it cost me 100$ with a public insurance plan and we have things like Medicare and Medicaid for people that qualify for them.

My friend's dad runs a metal recycling factory, and when a nearby HP facility closed down back in 2016, they dumped all of their server CPUs and RAM to the recycling factory. We had access to hundreds of Haswell & Broadwell Xeon E3 & E5 CPUs FOR FREE. Many of them were engineering samples. (Some of those broadwell-e xeon models had never been released by Intel). We felt like the luckiest nerds on the planet. I've been running a 22c 44t Xeon with 128gb DDR4 RDIMM RAM ever since.

Same thing happened with my x99 supermicro board shortly after I replaced the board. This would explain why this happened. Such fucking bullshit. I waisted 10 hours trying to trouble shoot and I ruled the mobo to be dead... Lol. I'll have to get a retail chip and test it.

I mean thats just too old computer. I was using computers like 15+ years and even in that time i did not encounter those computers that needed jumper move to 'unlock' cpu voltage or multiplier. Are you sure that those were not some 'brand computers', because that kind of computers may have 'brand specific' setup.

@SteelRodent thats just too old :) i was in 3rd grade elementary school in 97, not till 2002 maybe (i forgot) i got my first PC, some older computers i did saw and use, the oldest i encountered were produced in my town, and they were console based only, we were using them in 6th grade i think in elementary school. Other things older from 2000 that i used were consoles for games (sega, nintendo, PlayStation 1) :)

@@milosstojanovic4623 386, 486, Pentium, AMD k6, k6-2 and -3. It was normal to have to set the CPU speed, voltage and such with jumpers on the motherboard. It was not "too old" 30 years ago. The Pentium was released in '93. Just like the "Old non-userfriendly BIOS" in the video it was just normal back then.

9:20 Level of Detail is usually calculated by CPUs in a sequential manner, which is why games like Flight Simulator perform so terribly. If it didn't need to do that, it could theoretically run amazing. I think there's ways or theories on how to parallelize it (which would theoretically make framerates freaking skyrocket for most games), but I don't think anyone has properly done it yet.

This (and the recent video about 7980X) is very interesting to me since these could be very well used for some engineering and scientific computing. The problem is that with my experience, I find it hard to precisely estimate the horsepower per dollar value vs 5950X or 3960X. I know that this is about getting performance-varying ES or QS, but I'd love to see some benchmarks (also nongaming), and also some estimate costs of the entire system assuming that I don't have any Xeon-compatible parts around.

Affinity pinning with core on the same cache bus can increase performance by editing the shortcut launcher or service executable. Additionally, ECC ram rank interleaving for specific ring channels may increase performance it as well.

There a better Xeon CPU for a budget price. A Xeon with 4 cores 3.5Ghz is around $40 on Ebay. Decent CPU for just exclusively for gaming, however for multitasking like wanting to Record or Streaming is gonna tank it, even my Xeon is a 6 core 2Ghz and it doesn’t get the job done.

Thanks Linus, I just checked the website you mentioned in the UK and am now basically going to build a server, I don't need or have use for. That raw computing power in my own house though, it's not needed but I'll some how find a need. I guess I better buy some aircon units aswell. At least my office will be cool in the summer.

I know someone who helps maintain a server for his campus, they have a hardware refresh every 5 years. They usually only switch out specific parts, I'm pretty sure they've had their hard drives for a while.

IIRC. on high core count CPUs, FPS & frame times are most likely a memory issue if this CPU uses more than 1 NUMA node or it's an issue of core affinity. so either changing memory settings or manually setting applications to only run on 1 memory node or only scale to a couple of the cores should solve it.

Threadripper and EPYC make Xeon's irrelevant for most price brackets. You can get 1st or 2nd generation Epyc or Threadripper CPU's pretty cheap on Ebay.

I have firsthand experience from jobs in multiple PC repair shops, and I can tell you that over the past 25 years, I have seen ESD caused by careless techs damage CPUs, RAM modules, and HDDs. I've personally had two Synology NASs become inoperable due to ESD (they wouldn't even POST), each from a single discharge caused by normally walking about four to six feet across a carpeted room in the winter and then touching the NAS' metal case. I can say with absolute certainty that it is *NOT* very hard to damage components with ESD.

@@flyingbanana2436 I just watched the video to which I assume you referred (the URL is below for anyone interested), and all I have to say is... "Are you kidding me?!?" Do you actually think that video proved anything? They tested two RAM modules only, nothing else. One module catastrophically failed (no POST after ESD) and the other did not. It's kind of hard to claim "It's very hard to damage components [with ESD]" when the video showed a 50% failure rate. Additionally, their "test" was putting the RAM module into a PC and seeing if it POSTed. Any tech with a functioning brain will tell you that's not a real test. RAM modules typically do not fail catastrophically. The most common failures are when a RAM module appears to operate normally (the computer POSTs, boots, and appears to work), but some of the bits are invalid, resulting in different data being read or written. That's why RAM testing tools exist -- to test for bit-level errors. Here are the key points to take away from that video: 1. Linus doesn't like getting zapped with ESD. 2. Electroboom appears to take pleasure in zapping Linus with ESD. 3. Of the two RAM modules zapped with ESD, one failed catastrophically and the other did not. 4. Linus apparently doesn't know how to test RAM. 5. No other components were tested, so the effect of ESD on other components was never addressed. Similar story: Me and my dad were looking for a server to buy and we came across a second hand gpu miner server with 2x xeon gold 6242, 512GB enterprise ram, and m.2 ssd and 2x ssd 1.98tb enterprise on an auction. Ended up winning it for 3800€. A new one would be around 14999€ so I guess I can call it a win.

@@gedecandra7722 So there was no problem what so ever with the server. It has really good specs as well! It was totally worth it. We didn't get any background on what it was doing when as deployed but it's a gpu miner server so It leans towards crypto currency mining.

Server gear from the westmere and Sandy Bridge era is also still very viable today. The only drawback is is usually you have a whole bunch of cheap CPUs, but then you can't find a good working motherboard for a decent price.

I've always wondered what's going on with CS/ES, why are there so many of them? Where do they come from? What's Intel's opinion? I personally think it's a really good thing that keeps enthusiast that don't have the money for an official CPU happy while arming some money and reducing waste. Yeah, early LGA2011 boards don't have Intel ME firmware v8 which is required for v2 Xeons (Ivy Bridge-EP). Intel didn't allow end users to update old boards from ME firmware v7 to v8. Sometimes it can be quite hard to find which boards support v2 Xeons and which don't. I have a Lenovo ThinkStation S30 (type 0606) which doesn't support v2 but at least they tell what types support v2 Xeons and which don't (0568, 0569, 0606 are Sandy only while 4351 and 4352 support Ivy). Xeon v2 supported ThinkStation S30's are also quite easy to recognize from pictures because they have front USB 3.0 ports while the older ones don't. Some systems like HP Z420 Workstation don't have any visible differences so you have to check the ME firmware version in bios

@@Pasi123 So true about the HP, that is why I bought one that already had a v2 CPU in it when I went looking for mine, even if it was a shitty E5-1607v2. It just meant I didn't have to worry about compatibility when I upgraded the CPU to the 2667v2. As a bonus though the system I bought already had 32GB of ram in it.

I read the other day that with this many cores on a single chip, you run into some issues with the physical distance between cores and cache latency. So I wonder if you can boot Windows using just 8 (or however many) of the cores that are all on the same sector of the die to see if that would boost framerate / help with boost clock consistency?
