@@SIPEROTH You can run message passing/load balancing and node structuring on heterogeneous hardware, provided you can build compute nodes with it and form some kind of tcp-ip network to connect the nodes. Check 'beowulf cluster' for ideas, there are different things you can do with it but some things are more or less suited for some types of tasks, unsurprisingly, but there are a bunch of examples for things people have done from rasbpi clusters to top 100 fastest supercomputers including some of the configs.

Just to clarify. The cheyenne supercomputer was the 20th most powerful when it was built, but right now you can match the power of it with under 50 4090s. 28 rack units can be shrunk to 2 or 3.
@NUCLEARARMAMENT
@NUCLEARARMAMENT Ай бұрын
Multiply that number by at least 64 because 4090s cut off double precision calculations (FP64) to virtually nothing. The Cheyenne supercomputer was over 5,000 FP64 TFLOPS, and over 10,000 FP32 TFLOPS.
@harmvzon
@harmvzon Ай бұрын
@@NUCLEARARMAMENT 5 petaflops of FP64? you'd still need more than 500 A100's to get there. Honestly pretty impressive for a CPU based system from 2017.
@NUCLEARARMAMENT
@NUCLEARARMAMENT Ай бұрын
@@harmvzon The A100 manages to achieve 12.5 FP64 TFLOPS in LINPACK thanks to sparsity support being supported, out of a maximum theoretical 20 FP64 TFLOPS (so, around 5/8ths or 62.5% RPeak efficiency). That translates into around 400 or more A100s assuming linear scaling across the interconnect fabric. Sadly, I have no numbers for the H100 or the upcoming B100 GPUs, but expect at least 1.5-2 times for H100 and 3-4 times for B100 in LINPACK for FP64 calculations.

Fashionably behind once again this week, but I am a former OTR truck driver. Most new trucks come with what is called an APU, auxiliary power unit, run off a small diesel engine with typically a 1500 to 2000W inverter built into the system. The reason you are unlikely to see a high-end gaming computer typically is the incredible amount of vibration and physical movement in a semi truck. I actually knocked multiple Xbox 360s out of laser alignment with nothing more than standard driving.

regarding CPU supercomputers, I'm currently learning weather modelling and climate modelling, and most of the weather and climate models that we are learning about are designed to run on CPU supercomputers. For example the Weather Research and Forecasting model, WRF, has no ability to be run on GPUs - but runtimes scale linearly with # of cpu cores point is, not literally everything run on super computers is designed to run on GPU SMs

This is the primary way I listen to it in my car since it syncs progress between the video and the audio version. Not sure why but the last one to upload there was april 20. Its a little frustrating, and I'm guessing it's KZfaq's fault since it has been uploading to other podcast apps.

As a dev, when asked for timelines, I learned to take whatever I think it should take at first blush, then triple it. If I'm unsure, then I first add 2 of whatever units the initial estimate in, then triple it. Finally, I round up to the largest unit (so if the estimate ends up e.g. 6 days, I round up to 2 weeks). Usually I end up overestimating, but you'd be surprised by how little, and I find it's generally better to deliver early than deliver late.
@bythelee
@bythelee Ай бұрын
This rule applies to almost all projects, whether software, hardware, civil, mechanical, etc. First double the number. Then increase the time unit by one notch. 2 hours becomes 4 days. 3 weeks becomes 6 months. 2 months becomes 4 years. Yes, it is astonishingly accurate. All part of the human ability to vastly underestimate just how complex and difficult something is going to be.

22:10 - You're basically describing skill-based matchmaking. I'm personally all for it, but people enjoy stomping on the casual players and having a 5000:1 kill/death ratio, so they get angry any time SBMM is mentioned, because it means that they can't do that anymore. I find it boring when games always end with one team having a significantly higher score than the other. SBMM (ideally) prevents that, and (again, ideally) makes it so that most games end with a relatively even score, along with keeping players' K/D ratios close to 1.0
@Viirax
@Viirax Ай бұрын
You're missing the point for a lot of above average players here though, it's not "enjoy stomping on the casual players" it's "playing every casual match like it's the finals in a massive tournament is not enjoyable at all" and it also ruins playing with people of different skill levels
@Viirax
@Viirax Ай бұрын
@@taj1994 Personally, while extremely one-sided matches aren't that enjoyable either, I much prefer having matches that don't all feel the same. There's basically no variety when you constantly get lobbies where everyone uses the meta stuff. Should SBMM exist, yes, but it should not be anywhere near strict in casual modes. What's the point of ranked modes if casual is exactly the same just without a visible rank? And all that is excluding the manipulative matchmaking systems used by some games that basically decide that you're supposed to win or lose the match before you've even started.
@taj1994

@@Viirax "What's the point of ranked modes if casual is exactly the same just without a visible rank?" Most of the games I've played that use SBMM _don't_ have a ranked mode Admittedly, it's mainly Call of Duty though, since I'm not really into PvP in general, but do enjoy CoD (especially Infinity Ward's games. I also don't know if MWIII has a ranked option, since I haven't played it yet) The only major exception I can think of is Halo Infinite, but honestly though, as much as I love the campaigns, I could never get into Halo's multiplayer (outside of custom games with friends), so I just don't play that one very often I'm more of a modded Minecraft/co-op Souls/cruise around in Forza/explore the galaxy in Elite: Dangerous gamer most of the time though
@SomeGunNerd
@SomeGunNerd Ай бұрын
My problem with SBMM is that most games that have it can’t seem to actually match me with players of similar skill. I’ll have five matches in a row where I’m untouchable and destroying everyone, then I’ll have five matches where I can barely leave the spawn without getting put in the dirt, then repeat ad nauseam. I much prefer lobbies. If I feel the skill average is too high or low for me, I can just go to another lobby.
@hippiedude2232
@hippiedude2232 Ай бұрын
The concept of SBMM definitely has its place in gaming, but current implementations are dog shit at recognizing skill level. Plus.... Players on the higher skill level face matchmaking queues that take forever because there's not enough players in their level to start a match. Those same players then get on their Smurf account, or intentionally do bad to lose rating as soon as timers become inconvenient. Smurfing ruins the game experience for any new players looking to get a feel for the game before climbing to more challenging games. Intentionally losing rating just ruins the day for everyone. It's not fun to win or lose because of someone intent on sucking. And like any other gaming mechanic I don't want to see it crammed somewhere it doesn't fit just because it can be. Make it work within the context of the game/game-mode.

Except in tarkov you have almost every calibre available. You can load .366 into a 7.62 mag and then shit yourself when the gun doesnt cycle rounds. You can mix ammo types within one mag, so you can have FMJ and AP rounds as you maybe would in a warzone irl, based on what you have available. I really like the idea of Foxhole, but Linus and Luke didn't really go in depth as to what makes Tarkov so unique and realistic. Those are the same reasons it dominates its genre and why they have a monopoly on extraction shooters. Its been said for a while, that the only Tarkov-killer will be Tarkov. As we can see, the prophecy holds up.

Even Battlefield 1942 didn't have the magical ammunition balancing in clips/magazines. In BF1942 if you reloaded, you lost all ammunition remaining in the weapon. That has its own oddities, but I really think more games should have kept that.

@@notrobert8284 No new project can dethrone it right away, but Tarkov is getting closer and closer to its expiration date thanks to how poorly built its barebones features are and how all its systems rely on that mess. Can't fix the bad foundation without breaking everything else. The amount of work involved to resolve that is absurdly unrealistic even if you're an optimist. The relationship of map loading, loot generation and syncing the server/players won't get significantly better(scav queues are the quickest in good conditions but still take 50s+ at the minimum, no matter how good your specs are) Each match relying on offloading AI behavior to the server that doesn't always keep up. Overload scenarios can cause stutters/slowdowns/bugs that are almost impossible to replicate. Game performance can drop by half from something small, seemingly unrelated. Could be a small patch, could be a special event, could be server related, could be RAM mismanagement and the impact can vary from match to match greatly. There's so many other things I don't see them solving that are growing pains for years now, and unfortunately for them, technological advancements won't cushion those drawbacks either.

I can't say that I agree with Linus's take on pause ads moving the UI around. This was specifically about KZfaq on TVs, where you are using neither a touchscreen nor a mouse to navigate. It is directional arrows and media buttons on the remote that will control the app. Having the UI shift is in no way a problem here. "Don't buy it, grow a back bone." I hear you, but that in no way helps the people who were legit just lied to and scammed out of their money. "Don't buy it" helps break shitty consumer relationships, it doesn't solve the issue for a customer who was perfectly satisfied with a transaction they made, but then later had the rug pulled out from under them. Like there's a MASSIVE difference between bitching about horse armor and how the state of gaming is in the toilet because of it and then buying that same horse armor 10 minutes later, and buying the armor and being ENTIRELY satisfied with the purchase then having the armor somehow remotely removed 3 months later. You can be held responsible for making shitty buying decisions, but I don't think ANYONE should be held responsible for someone else legitimately just scamming and lying, not buying doesn't solve this unless you just chose to NEVER purchase a video game ever, just to avoid the possibility that they don't somehow, intentionally brick the game for everyone with an update just to fuck with people. Not buying in no way shape or form dissuades someone attempting a rug pull unless you expect nobody to ever purchase anything under any circumstance.

2:06:22 I don't know if it's in the legislation, but I would imagine that the temp passwords and first-time setup passwords would still be allowed to be things like admin:admin, so long as that password needs to be reset after the first use or after an hour/day/week of use (depending on what kind of software).
