Lionel 18056 New York Central Hudson and Vanderbilt Tender from 1997

I purchased this large locomotive at the TCA York Meet on Friday. 20 years old, but still runs pretty good. A lot of people hated the Vanderbilt tender, and yeah I can see why, but I love the Scullin disk drivers and the sound system. The sounds, being RailSounds 2, are quite limited with its features, but the whistle sounds great.

I like the Vanderbilt tender at the back. It makes the Hudson look like a streamliner. Like Vinnie the American engine from Thomas & Friends. He has a vanderbilt tender too.

I love this version and it gets so unfair bashing. The reason why they went with the Vanderbilt tender was because it was a 60th anniversary edition Hudson made as a more scale version of the 763E, which did come with a Vanderbilt tender. I think that they were planning to do a PT type tender afterwards, but likely scrapped the idea with costs. I love regardless and an amazing locomotive.

Which is the scale front truck? Large wheel or small? I bought mine second hand and has the larger wheel front truck on it? Also doesn't have the rubber tire drive wheel which makes a big difference I'm thinking

I actually like the tender. It looks nice. I think most people didn't like it because it wasn't prototypical.

You're actually (from my perspective) 99% right. The other 1% is attributed to the fact this one also had a rough casting, it wasn't as refined as previous renditions and the scullin disc drivers were also done roughly and had such a contrasting finish when compared to the rest of the model. But I'm like you, despite the tender being a B&O prototype I like it too.
