Welcome back to the train room for another great tutorial! A few videos back I decided to let you the viewers decide on which Wiliams Trains locomotive to upgrade. It was a close call, but the Williams E7 Won the vote!
This locomotive was equipped with a sound blast horn from Williams Trains. Today we will be installing a Railsounds II Soundboard from Lionell trains. The rail sounds kit was purchased on eBay and includes all necessary items to complete the upgrade minus tools.
This is going to be a two-part series, the next video will be on installing a fan smoke unit. This will be a challenge because this locomotive has eight smokestacks! But I am up for the challenge!

@NixCrossing no worries. I am not in a hurry, I am retired. I enjoy watching your videos especially the live streams. I mainly run Postwar lionel with some modern and a few DCS engines as well. I have some premier engines with fried boards that I put William's reverse units in the and they run great but was looking to add some sound back to them. I enjoyed your PS3 updates but don't think I would attempt it now after having many strokes. Keep up the good work Nick.

Thanks for watching! The seller most likely changed their name on eBay, but this product can be searched by typing in “Lionel Railsounds” on eBay. The picture is a white background and blue writing logo. I have also seen Railsounds with TMCC board kits for sale for around 200 on eBay. I hope this helps

Yes, there’s a pot on the board itself. You can add a pot to the frame if you disconnect the one on the circuit board and solder in an aux one

I've bought quite a few of those boards from him. He's one of the best sellers out here and answers your questions and helps you. Steam or diesels. Great stuff. You'll love them.

Not a problem, thanks for watching! This kit was approx $100. I also recently re wired the motors in series so it draws more power and the RPM sounds kick in. Williams motors are wired in parallel.

Hi Nix I know this an old video but did the read switch work for you? I just put an ERR rail sounds kit and I having the same problem

Great sound system. I've been looking at this same kit for my PW F units. I've used his Santa Fe Warhorse steam kit in the MPC 8206 streamlined tender that had a bad SOS board. Thanks for sharing. I haven't seen a lot of videos with his kits installed. He also has a couple Vanderbilt steam kits

If you wire up the motors in series it slows locomotive down and allows the sound to match speed. I did it on one of my videos.

@@NixCrossing Williams are wired in parallel and that's what makes them fast. Several modelers do it. I really want those E7s, best looking that Williams makes.

Have you tried by chance to use a BCR instead of a battery? Always worry about a battery leaking and we all know the PS1 and PS2 issues, not saying that will happen here but if you have them laying around will they work to keep power continuous?

@@charlie-mm7cv I have BCRs installed in all of my PS2 locomotives 3 and 5 volt variations. BCRs still require about 15 seconds of start up time to charge (capacitors) while running in conventional. BCRs charge much faster while using a DCS system with approximately 18VAC to the track. Hopefully this helps

How did that take you to install it in the william locomotive

It would have taken me about 10 minutes. You use the wires that would have gone to the sound blast system. This just uses track power

Nick, sounds great! I have a pair of MTH E8s that could use an upgrade like this, beautiful units with streamlined passenger cars but they only have a cheesy sounding horn. I bought a Williams SD90 a while ago and remember reading an article online explaining how to wire the 2 motors in series to slow it down and make for a better runner. I did and it did make for a better performer (you can see the headlight better anyway) Wonder if that would help your sound board to be more in sync?

Great tutorial Nick! And entertaining as well! A question, if variable power is what's needed to alter the rev sounds on the board is it possible or advisable to take AC power directly from the track? If it is varying the track power should vary the rev sounds. Apples and oranges of course, but the Williams boards operate off AC and so do ERR's.
