Just prior to our arrival a lone Enkoyonai lioness had caught herself a wildebeest whilst the rest of the lion pride were still watching the herd. The lioness started to feed a little bit as the rest of the pride went to relax in the shade a few hundred meters away. The other lions eventually realised what was going on and came to join the feast.

About Rob The Ranger Wildlife Videos:
The purpose of the channel is to show what it is like to experience seeing wild animals on an African safari. Nature Documentaries are often highly edited to tell a story, wildlife safaris are not, and the idea here is to show the wildlife sightings the way they were seen. Safari tours in Africa are generally suitable for all ages and this channel can be considered an educational channel about incredible nature, some scenes in the nature videos may be more graphic than people are used to but this is the reality of nature and is what you would see if you were present on such a safari in person. Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel. Hopefully the animal videos on this channel can provide a glimpse into what the nature experience is like and encourage more people to take a wildlife safari one day. Make sure to subscribe and enable ALL notifications!

No fighting here as there was plenty of meat to go around for all of them, otherwise their interactions would have likely been more tense, angry, and aggressive. Excellent footage shot here showing how strong these lions really are in tearing apart their prey as they feed.

Dear Rob, please consider investing in a wind shield for your microphone which is less than $5 and prevents the noise when the wind hits the microphone, better yet buy a hundred and sell them to the tourists, they have the same problem. PS a wind shield is a piece of foam that covers your microphone and works great without affecting the sensitivity of your microphone, Thank You

Hi Rob, fantastic video as always. a couple of questions. 1) The lioness dragged the carcass a couple of times in the beginning ... was she trying to hide it from her pride? Is this normal behavior for lions? 2) Why did she stop feasting around @8:00 ?

@robtheranger
@robtheranger 5 жыл бұрын
+tdkid1 only in private reserves/conservancies/concessions but despite that I have to commend the guides in the Mara, the crowded sightings are still managed well enough for everyone to get a view and come and go as needed. A crowded sighting in Kruger can have you stuck in a traffic jam for hours with no clue what is even causing the crowd!

It appears wildebeest have cuts of flesh that we humans in the States could enjoy. I'd like to be able to go to the market and purchase cuts of wildebeest to roast. Perhaps Rob will consider that as a secondary business opportunity :) . On a side note, while zoos have transitioned to provide animals with more natural habitats, it seems to me they should also provide predators with live prey in order to replicate a more natural existence while in a captive environment.
@timstoffel4799
@timstoffel4799 5 жыл бұрын
Friends of mine that have gone to South Africa report that some Plains game species meat can be found in supermarkets there. Another friend reports wildebeest is kind of greasy. As for feeding live prey to zoo animals, few animals in Western zoos have enough experience to make a clean kill on live prey. We even have to cut open a whole animal the first few times we feed one so they know there's tasty meat under all that fur.
@alevine1951
@alevine1951 5 жыл бұрын
@@timstoffel4799 Thanks for that info! But it seems like large zoo predators don't have a problem killing humans, such as the 3 year-old who fell into the wild dog enclosure (horrors!) or the occasional keeper who doesn't take proper precautions around big cats. So it's curious if they seem not to know how to recognize and clean kill live food prey. I wonder if they aren't given live prey due more to the optics of it, or the practicalities of providing live prey.
@timstoffel4799
@timstoffel4799 5 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting question. In the case of dogs, they eat their prey to death as a pack. For the cats, I don't know enough details of the injuries sustained to the keepers that died, but I know that some of the 'kills' were the result of rough play, rather than a food drive or aggression. The Chinese, perhaps the world's experts in captive big cat husbandry, often feed live prey. Perhaps the biggest reason here in the USA is such an action would be considered overly cruel to the prey animal, even if it was a clean kill. So yeah, it could probably be made to work, but you would never get away with it here.
