Video #708: Translucent Liquid Sculpey (TLS) vs Sculpey Bake & Bond vs Kato Liquid Polyclay vs Fimo Liquid Gel... More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
In this video I will compare the differences between 4 brands of liquid polymer clay. Translucent Liquid Sculpey (TLS), Sculpey Bake & Bond, Kato Liquid Polyclay and Fimo Liquid Gel.
All 4 of these are liquid polymer clays that have to be baked to cure. Liquid clays can be used to do image transfers, molded pieces, coatings, glazes, adhesive, mixed with solid clays to soften or make icings, mixed with chalks or mica powders, used to polymerize fabric and paper, etc., etc.
I show examples of pieces from past tutorials where I have used liquid polymer clay.
TLS, Bake & Bond and Kato Liquid, all start milky and bake up translucent. Fimo Liquid starts out as a clear gel and bakes the clearest. Kato is the next clearest, with TLS and Bake & Bond baking up the least translucent.
Both Kato and Fimo are fairly shiny when baked, though Fimo has a slight pitting to the surface. Both TLS and Bake & Bond bake up to a matte finish, though they can be brought to a shine by sanding and buffing them.
Kato Liquid has a slight yellowish tinge when baked and Fimo has a slightly white tint. I didn't mention it in this video, but I am guessing that the whitish look comes from UV enhancers, since I hear that Fimo liquid glows under UV light.
All four clays can be used with pretty much any brand of clay, since they all have a bit of a range in temperatures at which they will cure at. The recommended temperature for TLS, B&B, and Kato are 275F and for Fimo 265F. Though all of them will bake at quite a bit higher temps (up to 300F+) with quite good results. In fact many clayers will bump up the baking temps of their liquid polymer clays, to improve clarity. This needs to be done with caution if combining with sold polymer clays though, because the solid clays will scortch at higher temps.
I show examples of all four brands of polymer clay that were baked for 30 minutes at 275F. I also show the strength of the baked liquid clays and the clarity of each sample after baking.
As far as value goes, TLS and B&B are the most widely available in retail as well as online, and are the least expensive of the four liquid clays tested. Kato Liquid Polyclay is the next highest in price, and is available in limited retail locations, and online. Fimo Liquid is the most expensive and is available in both retail and online. It is more readily available in Europe than in North America.

Cindy, if you hit that TLS with the heat gun for a few seconds after baking it will give it a very clear, glossy finish too. Thanks so much for this comparison, I've was curious about the Fimo. Tfs Lyn

Thank you for another great video. Wanted to mention that I painted on top of a baked white pendant and then used Papercraft liquid glass as I wanted a really glossy shine and it looked beautiful. Have used the Sculpey Liquid Clay and looked nice but the liquid glass (no need to bake) really brought out the design, not sure how long it will last but does set hard and looks beautiful. Just another option, thanks again!

Once again you have answered so many questions that pop up regarding the differences between the various brands. It's so helpful that you showed them before and after baking and also that you demonstrated the flexibility and strength. We carry them all at Shades of Clay. If it's OK with you, I think we'll post your video on our site for all to see.Thank you!

It is different in Canada and the U.S. than on the European continent. In Europe we usually have Fimo as a first choice, maybe because it is a german product. Nowadays Sculpey is more and more available too, here. If you go to the russian youtube-ladies, like Anna Oriona, you see she uses mostly Fimo too. Rusalina uses Cernit, also a european, high quality, polymer clay. Also Monica Resta (MoClay) from Italy, and Sandra (Sandrartes) from Spain use mostly Fimo.

I have used TLS and Kato. Kato is my absolute favorite. I bought two large bottles of both so I use the TLS for when I want to bond things together and Kato when I want clarity. I will probably continue to buy both because I don't like to use the Kato where it won't be seen like when bonding baked and raw clay. :) - Heidi

Hi Cindy, I've loved your channel for years and refer back quite a bit. Thank you and your husband for all the hard work you put in. The labor of love shows! Recently I've been frustrated over the price of fimo gel and its EXTREMELY limited availability!! What's going on with that???? I refuse to compromise on clarity and I see no way around having to buy the fimo brand but, my gosh!! Its SOOOO expensive!

I have just bought an 8 ounce bottle of the Kato Clear Liquid Polyclay Medium, wishing I bought the fimo product now, hopefully when it’s thin the Kato won’t look yellow. Great comparison though I would have liked to see the thin smears held up to the camera, and obviously we can’t see the slight orange peel effect of the fimo, but purely on clarity and colour the fimo looked by far the best.

My Kato transparent LiquidClay tends to separate, but the colored ones don't. I have a big bottle of it, and was planning on using it for years, like my TLS. Any ideas on preventing the separation? Also, I'm trying to come up with a paste that I would use like mehnde, or like precious metal clay in a syringe (I've never actually tried this), but the liquid clays seem to be too stringy, elastic, and self leveling. Has anyone had success with this?

You forgot to peel off the thinner samples : ( oh well. I really wanna get the Kato now and I've been wanting to get the fimo! I have both sculpey ones and I love the bake and bond for attaching pieces together! Oh and it's not just yours my Bake and bond is def thicker than TLS it's made that way so pieces attach better without falling off.

Hello Cindy. Great tutorial as always. At 8:10 you talk about the 'tiny particles' in the Fimo liquid clay. I have the same problem as well. Did you ever find out what the particles are and if you can remove them? I was wondering if it is because the liquid clay has not been used for some time and the air in the bottle is 'attacking ' the clay making it gritty. I had the same problem with household paint that had not been used for a while. The paint had started to become gritty as well with small hard particles in the can. This could be strained out, but I bought a new can of paint. Thanx.

Hi there, no I have not found out what those particles are and whether it would be beneficial to strain them out or not. Sounds like it would be a good thing to test.

If I have a baked piece of polymer jewelry, and I coat it with liquid Kato on one side, put it in the oven for the prescribed time to cure, remove it from the oven, let it cool, turn the piece over, can I then put a coat on the back, and bake it again, without the first side coat sticking or melting? Thank you.

Just fyi, Fimo Deco Gel is available on Amazon.ca for much cheaper than DeSerres, it's $13 compared to almost $19 at DeSerres. And it's available with free shipping if I remember correctly. I really want to see those 2 other liquid clays you didn't mention, the gold and silver ones. I saw them on a website a while back and been curious how they looked baked since.

+brikhouse22 I prefer to buy from independents. Because of its abusive, "always lower wages" policies, and even inhumane labor practices, and cutthroat business practices, I don't think people should buy from Amazon. Brick and Mortar stores may cost more, but that money pays wages and taxes for the good of the community, that would otherwise go into Jeff Bezos's or The Walton's pockets.

FYI-Donna Kato has a free class on her craftartedu.com site where she recommended baking her liquid clay at 275 and after taking it out of the oven, hitting it with a heat gun to get it very clear. I use TLS to glue layers together and the Kato liquid for shiny finishes. I'm wondering if any of them can be poured and baked in a silicone mold. Anyone tried this?

+SeawardCreations I've tried it with limited success using clear and color, but they seem to get crumbly. The silicone mold performed well, but little crumbles of clay were left in the mold, and hard to remove. I'm still working on it. Hitting any of them with a heat gun, when I've used them as the clear part of an eye, seems to work well.
