Liquids on the Rails? - Unboxing and Product Review of Rapido's HO Scale Procor Alberta Tank Car!
This unboxing and product review takes a look at a Canadian prototype HO scale tank car from Rapido Trains!
This Procor tank car was designed in the 1960s. It was designated GP20, for general purpose, 20000 gallon capacity. It should not be confused with EMD’s GP20 locomotive, which is something entirely different.
The car was designed for light density liquids that would not freeze in extreme cold, such as certain oils and fuels. Some of the cars were equipped with interior heater coils.
Nearly 1000 examples of this design were produced between 1969 and 1984. These cars were used throughout North America. Some were owned by leasing companies such as Procor or Union Tank Car. Canadian Pacific and British Columbia Railway also had some of these cars.
As usual, Dan evaluates the model's packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards. A RIP Track segment is included to show how to fix any minor issues.
If you like Canadian trains, tank cars, or just freight trains in general, be sure to check out this unboxing and product review!

This model failed our assessment test because of an unstable car wobble and uneven coupler heights on each end. You've had the lucky one. Great Review Dan!!!!

I'm sorry you had issues with your model. At least this Rapido car didn't disassemble itself, which is an improvement over the bulkhead flats I reviewed a while ago. Thanks for watching!

On the bright side, I had better luck with the Intermountain HO scale tank sets. I only had to calibrate fewer pairs of their couplers.

Love your videos Dan, but a 5 point deduction for the haz-mat placard placement is excessive in my opinion!! You even said there is no practical way to mount the placard on the railings, and there is not, sooo..... ?? These wonderful cars are already expensive enough, and I don't want the prices to keep rising because of non-practical and excessive engineering. Thanks for the video.

I see your point, but I don't really know what else to do with that. It is in the wrong place, and that's normally a deduction. I want to be as consistent as possible. Thanks for the feedback and for watching!

I've always seen your point, Dan! I've been purchasing Rapido trains Inc products lately, and for the high prices we pay, the equipment must be done right to the tee!

It's always disappointing when expensive models arrive with broken parts, so it's nice this particular car didn't have that issue. I'm glad you liked the review. Thanks for watching!

Good review on a great looking tanker. I would like to have 20 or 30 of them rumbling around my layout, but being retired the pension won't stretch that far and I tried asking the dog if she would give up her dog treats for a while but she declined 😢 so it's back to eBay to see what I can find. 😊😊😊

Excellent review as always, Dan! Here recently I have been somewhat disappointed with a lot of Rapido's offerings although not enough to exclude them from consideration. There are enough companies out there putting out stuff that has better QC for the same price, though. I could definitely see some Canadian tank cars making their way down to Donner Pass. Heck I see Canadian locomotives here in Texas now! lol.

Hey Dan, very good review. Well done. It's a good thing you reviewed it because I have one car like this one. Probably the only (I think) Rapido unit I got. It's a Procor UTLX car. Like you, I'm pretty much satisfied of it. I had to replace the couplers like you did and there was a broken handrail on top I had to glued. Unlike your model, the vents on top of my tank car are straight. Yours are a bit bended from the inside. The chain you're talking about is a great idea to add detail on it. I've also putted 36 inches semi scale wheels on it. Overall, I'm satisfied. I tried to find some more UTLX cars but seems like they're all gone. Keep on your good work Dan ! Hi to Nicole.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I would need to find a suitable chain. The smallest chain I know of right now is 40 links per inch, which seems a little coarse for this particular car. Anyway, maybe that could be a cool future project. Thanks for watching!

The deduction for the placard is confusing to me, Dan. You said yourself that with the fineness of the details it would be difficult to have the placard there, and I'd much rather have a small detail in a slightly incorrect position for that specific run of cars than have a car with chunky details as a concession to having that detail be correct as it would diminish the overall look of the car.

Note comments referring to “tankers”, in North America, these “tank cars” - “tankers” are boats. Those “things” on top of the tank are pressure relief valves a/k/a safety relief valves. Since there are two, must deduct 10 points from the review.
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 4 ай бұрын
I thought those must be some kind of vent. The real cars had two, just like the model, so it is correct. Thanks for the info and for watching!

@@DanielCortopassi Some tank cars, primarily in Corrosive Liquid and non-hazardous materials service may have a non-re-closing “safety vest” - a device utilizing a frangible or rupture disc. If over pressurized, the disc bursts. On the web, search for the 4th Edition of the AAR’s Field Guide to Tank Cars-it has lots of info on contemporary tank cars. I do enjoy your reviews.

What washeres would you recommend for rolling stock with lips too large to accommodate Kadee red fiber washers? I've tried reaming the Kadee washers out but cannot get them big enough for some HO rolling stock with metal underbodys.
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 5 ай бұрын
Sometimes I use a round file to enlarge the opening in the Kadee washers. Once in a while I use bronze thrust washers intended for motors or gears, so you could maybe search for those. They are available in different sizes, so you might be able to find some with larger hole sizes. Thanks for watching!
