This was just incredible! It was a wonderfully thorough investigation of the Daniel Smith and Gesso treatments to the pages in our coloring books. I think the Gesso will help me get my colored pencils to work much better in the too smooth paper in many of the coloring books that are now coming out without much, if any tooth, to their smooth paper. I don't know why this paper change even in books that had tooth in earlier editions, has been made even to books by very popular artists. With no tooth the paper can't pull color off of my budget-colored pencils' leads. I am very interested in how the Daniel Smith may make it possible for me to use some of my ancient water-based markers. My computer skills are minimal, but I think KZfaq will let me save this video. Hope at last for being able to color in today's smooth coloring books with my pencils and even to be able to use some of my very ancient water-based brush markers if the years in storage haven't dried them out completely. THANK YOU!

The gesso is clear. So you are seeing the color in the paper through the clear gesso on the back. It appeared to protect the page behind, but since you stopped I can't say for sure. I have to wonder if it also would have prevented excessive warping. The issue with any of these is that watercolor is designed to soak into the paper, that is how it creates all of the effects it does. Watercolor paper is sized, which controls the absorption, but it doesn't stop it. By sealing the surface, the watercolor simply sits on top in a puddle until it dries.. you can't drop in color, get transitions, highlights, shading, blooms, etc. If all you wish to do is lay a flat layer of color down, and don't mind the texture under your pencils I guess it works, but in that case why use waterbased mediums at all and not just go for a marker?

Hi thanks for watching. By treating the paper I can use waterbased mediums and they do flow on the paper and I am able to blend colours. Alcohol markers absorb into the non treated paper and are not great to blend. I also like to work in double sided books so markers are a no go. I totally agree the best paper is watercolour paper with proper sizing. Popular colouring books do not often come on great paper.

Thank you for the video. Based on a previous video I had purchased the Daniel smith. I have used gesso and do not like the sandy grit. So I used nothing. Lol. Excited to try this new medium to me. ❤❤

Thank you for sharing and doing these tests scientifically on your cute pages, I really appreciate that. I often thought what would happen if you treat the back of a page instead, thanks for clarifying and taking one for the team. Satin glazing liquid can buckle and is also quite textured which my pencils/tips don't like. I may try the DS ground as I prefer smooth.

Yes, I like the satin glazing liquid. I used in a book with Amazon type paper and it worked well with watercolors and was not rough like gesso.

Hi Jody, I've been wondering about Danielle Smith's watercolour ground. You have convinced me that 'ground' is better than 'gesso' for colouring pages. On another note, funny that this product has the same name as the premier of Alberta - lol.

If there are hard distinctive ridges on the paper, I use a fine grit nail buffer to lightly rub the paper and take down the ridges of gesso.
