So here I review some of my favorite tequilas under $30. I tried to pick bottles that are widely available, and yet high in quality for the price point. The list includes Cabrito Blanco at $22, Camarena Blanco at $16, El Padrino Blanco at $24, El Padrino Anejo at $29.99, 100 Anos Anejo at $20, El Caballo Estrella Anejo at $23, El Jimador Anejo at $25, Gran Centenario Anejo at $27, El Toro de Lidia Anejo at $29, Hornitos Anejo at $23, and
Hornitos “Black Barrel” Anejo at $26.
If you enjoy my reviews and want even more, join me at my LiquorHound Patreon channel (link in the barrel picture on my homepage or / liquorhound . There you'll get an extra 30-40 videos per year, in addition to the 10-12 that I've always done here.
As of 7-2017, my current bottle count stands at over 2,400 bottles. I am a Certified Specialist of Spirits and have also been certified by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). I've been actively collecting for the last two decades and what started as a small basic home bar has transformed (with the help and understanding of my wonderful wife) into what I think is a pretty nice collection. Thank you for watching and sharing in my passion.
Cheers!

Great review. Looking forward to trying some of these. Gran Centenario has always been one of my go to tequilas. Cimarron Blanco was recommended to me and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a decent sipper for about $20.

I'm from Mexico. If you find a tequila named Tequila Cazadores reposado, don't hesitate to buy it. Its price is about 20 or 25 usd. It's one of the most exquisite tequilas for a low price. Now, The preferences of those tequilas in Mexico is the next one: 1-El Jimador. 2- Cabrito reposado. 3- Hornitos reposado. 4- Centenario. 5- 100 años. 6- Camarena. 7- El padrino. 8- Toro de lidia.

I tried Cazadores Reposado and really enjoyed it, thanks for the suggestion. When I was in Mexico I was introduced to Sauza 100 Anos and it was so good but I can not get it where I live so I have to wait and enjoy it when I visit Mexico.

So glad to see new Tequila reviews, there are not enough of them. Two that I like for under $30 are El Major and Los Altos. One local store here is in Denver (Davidson's) has two separate barrels picked for their store and they are fantastic and completely different from each other. Bottles sell for about $24.00 for the Anejo. Amazing.

I always love coming back to your videos when I start trying out different liquors. So far.. I've had lots of scotches & bourbons. Started doing margaritas because they are so good. Trying different tequilas. Blancos work best to me. Camerena silver is great. I just got some el Jimador too. Tried Espalon as well. That one's kind of mild. All clear tequilas. I really like the taste of them. I think aging them is unnecessary, but you know, I've yet to venture into the aged ones so who knows? Great rundown. Cheers.

Thanks for the great job describing the tasting notes of these Tequilas. I think my preference is moving toward the aged agave lately instead of blanco tequila because I'm starting to enjoy more refined flavors over the intensity of the agave. Lots of diffuser tequilas here. For $30, it’s hard to find traditionally made tequilas, but there are plenty of great autoclave tequilas at that price point. For traditionally made tequilas around $30, toro de lidia, fina estampa, olmeca altos, milagro, are a few options. Know how your tequila is made before you buy it. It matters.

Liqourhound, I've heard a lot of good things about 7 Laguas Reposado. Can you include that one in your next mid-range tequila comparisons? It goes for about $43 at Total Wine. Also, I tried the El Caballo Estrella Blanco and really love it, a very clean, fresh, well-balanced, baked agave. Warning: addictive! Also, the next time you review mid to high end tequilas, would you consider including the Frida Kahlo Anejo? Total Wine has it.

I'd recommend starting with the El Padrino line of tequilas. They're in your price range and very tasty for a beginner. Now if you can spend a tad more, I think you should try Maestro Dobel Diamante Tequila. It combines Reposado, Anejo and Extra Anejo and is a real crowd pleaser at around $40-$50. Cheers!

I just picked up mini bottles of the El Padrino Blanco and Anejo as my first adventure into Tequila. I enjoyed both especially the Anejo. The Anejo has a nose that I think might be my favorite of anything spirit I've tried so far, and the beautiful butterscotch and vanilla flavor was really nice. With my experience being mostly from whisky, it blows my mind how a spirit so young can be so good.

The Camarena line is produced for Gallo Wine of California as their entry into the Tequila market, it's just an average, decent plata. Probably the best of the lot for the price is either El Jimador Rep and Toro De Lidia. Of course it is incorrect to compare different styles of Tequila, regardless of price. To my pallet, the Hornitos Black Barrel is very reminiscent of an Extra Añejo or strong Añejo due to the forward oak finish. Not for everyone. Also, I wish you would mention things like entry and finish after-taste, alcohol burn and nose, back notes and smoothness.

I had the Hornitos anejo recently and was really put off by it's very persistent, almost filmy/oily mouthfeel. Not sure if that was something you perceived or if it was specific to the batch or my own pallette, but it was kind of hard to ignore. I did enjoy the flavor, overall, though it certainly was unique, with its bigger, broader chocolatey flavors. But that mouthfeel.... Just odd. Almost a numbing quality. Anyways, hey, just found the channel. There's kind of an absence of critical tequila analysis on KZfaq (lots of stuff on whiskey and wine) but I feel like tequila, beyond just being my favorite spirit, should enjoy much more celebration from enthusiasts, hobbyists and experts of all kinds for it's diversity and complexity that has been developed unique to the culture surrounding it, for going on hundreds of years. Anyways, really enjoyed the video, and you got a new subscriber!

just wondering, why is tequila sold in mexico 38% and the one in the USA 40% and if you feel a difference and which do you find to be better. Thank you.
@LiquorHound
@LiquorHound 4 жыл бұрын
I think the 38% thing is just the way they’ve always done it. The lower abv helps the distillery’s profits (more water less product) and at the same time makes it easier to drink for the consumers. The 40% abv has been a standard minimum dating back to prohibition (after shady illegitimate sellers would water down their whiskey for profits). Once prohibition ended it became the standard minimum that continues to this day. As for my preference, I prefer the 40% since that 2% makes a difference. Cheers!

If you want to avoid the taste or smell of alcohol, stick to 80 proof bottlings (or even better, Mexico bottlings at 76 proof). And possibly try the sweeter tequilas (what I like to call “dessert style” tequilas) where they sweeten the tequila by using oak barrels that contained agave nectar. Brands like Suavecito specialize in that. Cheers!

Hey LiquorHound - question: i've heard that non-blanco tequilas (like reposados, anejos, etc.) sometimes have added sweetener and/or flavors. any info on whether or not this is true and if there is a way to tell?
@LiquorHound
@LiquorHound 7 жыл бұрын
+rockindrop - It's true that Mixtos add coloring and sugars to the tequila. As of 2013, the law states that only 100% agave blancos are protected against any additives except water. Repo's and Anejo in both 100% and mixto categories can have added caramel coloring as well as some "natural" additives like glycerin, oak extracts and “sugar-based syrup” (sometimes agave nectar). Now as to who does and doesn't add anything (and to what extent) is the BIG question. And it's not just a aged tequila problem, it extends into other brown spirit categories like some whiskies and rum. Hopefully as the consumers become more knowledgeable to this, there will enough pressure to tighten up all the laws against additives. Cheers!

LiquorHound , thanks for that clarification regarding the 100% Rep's and Anejo's as a was unaware of additives for those two factions.

I had to search again and it is more ambiguous than US whiskey law, but seems like only mixtos are allowed colorants and flavorings, not the 100% agaves. I could be wrong and then that's a real shame.

I’ve been a fan of theirs for awhile. The older tall bottles with metal labels were great back in the day. The newer ones are still nice, but don’t seem as rich to me as I remember. Cheers!

I don't think so. I just picked up and reviewed their Extra Anejo for my Patreon channel and it wasn't very syrupy/sugary or artificial tasting to me. It's main notes were the baked agave, vanilla bean, chocolate, oak and cedar. Cheers! www.patreon.com/liquorhound

Howdy Bro! Just recently a friend of mine brought me Gran Centenario Anejo 38%, 695 ml. in tube box, passed over to me by a friend in Mexico. It was bought there 7 years ago or so. Even though 'one shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth", nonetheless as i can judge - that one wasn't highly rated by you. Could ya tell me what's wrong with that or in other words-what it's lackin'? Thanks in advance)

The older ones (from the early 90’s) were what I cut my “tequila teeth” on. So that bottle will alway hold a little place in my heart. Considering it’s very moderate price point (and that it was a gift), I think you’ll be happy with it. Cheers!

Ohhh I really enjoy those as well, but around me DJ Blanco runs $37 and Clase Azul much more, so I couldn’t include them in this “Under $30” video. I love the information though and thank you for the comment. Cheers!

Tequila blanco is as an appetizer. it causes you to eat and above all consume more tequila, lol. Tequila añejo is like digestive. It is for later a good food. Tequila reposado does not cause salivation. It is to accompany meals.

Have you tried the new Camarena Anejo. I bought a bottle last month. Just finished it up. I usually drink the Repo. But I can't stand it after the Anejp. It tastes like water. The Anejp has a rich full flavor. Also the bottle says it is 40%. But it gives me a buzz like it is 45%. I don't get much Vanilla flavor but a lot of sweet potato and butterscotch.

I never felt the “aggressiveness” until I poured it out of the bottle. I was drinking from the bottle and it was smooth until I poured in a glass-weird. Overall I still like it but there are other Tequilas especially the reposados that are awesome. I started drinking Tequila with Corralejo Reposado before I moved on to the more expensive ones. It’s an extremely smooth Tequila that I still buy till today
