We take a Railfan Window ride on an LIRR Budd M3 from Atlantic Terminal Brooklyn to Jamaica. This entertaining ride above ground and in tunnels thrills young and old alike. Young railfan gets a big kick out of this ride as well as this old one. Train is piloted by the Sauerkraut Engineer.

Going East: 20:14 New west entrance to Van yard (Carlton Ave. yard mostly removed) 22:02 Old entrance to Carlton Ave. yard. Stopped being used when the LIRR got the M1s. 22:44 Old entrance to Van yard. Originally for freight until the M1s. 23:51 Tunnel turnout to BMT (?) Franklyn Avenue shuttle. Never completed when they built the tunnel in 1903. 24:38 Atlantic Ave. viaduct. Built in 1903. Rehabilitated in 1993 (painted and reinforced footings). Completely rebuilt sometime in the 2010's I believe. 27:54 Second tunnel built in 1903. 29:00 East New York. 29:20 Third tunnel built in 1939 replacing another rather short viaduct. This viaduct allowed trains to turn south and join the Bay Ridge branch. 32:25 Tunnel turnout to the old Rockaway branch. Closed in 1962. 32:37 Woodhaven Station. Closed 1976. Above this and above the street is Woodhaven Jct. Station. Closed in 1962. 35:27 Dunton Station used to be here. Closed 1939? 36:11 Van Wyck overpass. Replaced in 2020 I believe.

The side walking planks on the Atlantic Avenue viaduct were installed sometime in the 2010’s I believe. I remember taking those M3s to Brooklyn back in the 90s and early 2000s. You are correct that it looked like it flew in the air over Atlantic Avenue.

I also remember those wonderful years going to the city to visiting family in the summer. I never got over the first time I saw the original Yankee Stadium from the El and ALL THAT GREEN GRASS for the first time ever! It was my vision of heaven! Many fine memories of those days. Too bad we eventually grow up and the excitement lessens. As the song goes, "those were the days!"

That video was great! I know the Atlantic Avenue Branch very well because I used to ride it almost every Wednesday. I also hope to get the chance to ride an M3 and view the ride through the front window. Also, hearing that excited little boy reminded me of when I was little and I used to ride the train with my dad.

I always love your cab/front views especially because you comment informatively! I would like to know why, when leaving the Brooklyn terminal, the trains move so slow. I know there might be a swaying issue when they go faster when switching tracks because a train might hit the wall when turning, but if the train is coming from a straight track, the train should be able to go faster. Any ideas Mr. Retired Railfan Horn Guy? Thanx!

Very nice Tim. The only thing missing was radio chatter on your scanner. It couldn't have been any more annoying to people than that kid. You have more patience for kids than I do. By the way, I remember the glory days of the MP-54 cars. How unfortunate a train of them wasn't saved for fan trips and special events. If the subway guys could save those great old cars, why couldn't the LIRR and Metro NORTH have done the same. Imagine a train of open window New York Central electric MU cars whining along the Hudson Line with the spectacular views of the Hudson River up to Croton-Harmon !! All I have now are wonderful memories of it.

He was a well behaved young railfan and I’m not going to criticize his zeal in that situation!!!! If the father of the child should read this and he was a nice man, I don’t think he would be pleased. I gave him my channel name so he could watch it. I recall I was the same when I was his age. Evidently I do have more patience with kids. I’ve spent days in the Philippines with many kids who are relatives of my wife. I used to sponsor kids in that country years ago
