Lisa Eldridge was six years old when she discovered her mother’s make-up bag, sparking a lifelong fascination with all things beauty that has led her to become one of the most respected figures in the industry. With more than 25 years as a make-up artist under her belt, Eldridge has created beauty looks for countless magazine covers, catwalk shows and celebrities, as well as launched her own beauty line, fronted documentaries about the history of make-up and become an early pioneer of the KZfaq beauty tutorial, establishing a 2 million-strong following on the platform.
Who better, then, to turn to for the eighth and final instalment in British Vogue and KZfaq’s Vogue Visionaries series? The past year has seen the likes of Naomi Scott, Sam McKnight, Alexa Chung, Bernardine Evaristo, Jourdan Dunn, Celeste and Patricia Bright all impart their expert knowledge and advice on how to break into their respective industries, and now Eldridge shares her hard-won wisdom on everything she has learnt about the beauty business from her almost three decades working in every corner of it.
From how to get a foot in the door (Eldridge, new to London, first worked on make-up counters) to building a kit on a budget (buy your make-up brushes from an art store), Eldridge gives the need-to-know practical tips on building a career as a make-up artist as well as providing a how-to on the one skill every budding artist needs to master - the natural beauty look. In fact, Eldridge’s KZfaq video (she launched her channel 11 years ago) on how to achieve “no make-up make-up” has been viewed 3.3 million times and counting. Lisa uses the platform to embrace her creativity. As she puts it, “With KZfaq, I do it on my own time, on a day that I’ve got an idea. I’m able to go through the whole [editing] process myself.” When it comes to being a successful content creator, her advice is simple: “Be authentic.” Most of all though, if you want to make your mark and earn a name for yourself, you need to “stay curious,” she says. “Stay excited.”

I notice the same contrast in quality between Radio4 and literally any USA radio station. Instead of hoping “they don’t merge with the operation across the pond” though, what I hope is that all platforms that promote culture level up.

Lisa Eldridge truly is such an inspiring woman. She has achieved so, so much but through her sheer hard work and persistence. Yet she remains so down to earth and so relatable. Her passion for makeup is contagious. I have nothing but true, genuine respect and admiration for Lisa. A lovely person and amazing at everything she does. Thank you Vogue.

Lisa Eldridge changed everything about makeup on KZfaq. Even now, I watch her videos from 7 years ago to recreate those looks. She filled the gap on KZfaq - pretty much the rare and precious handful of MUAs who is so sincere about teaching everyone.

I remember the first time I watched Lisa's first ever video on KZfaq in 2009, the "morning after make up" video she talks about here, which couldn't have been more than a few weeks after it was uploaded. I truly had no idea who she was or what her career trajectory had been up until then (and remember, back then it would have been nearly unheard of for a top make up artist to make videos on KZfaq) but her experience and graciousness shone through and I remember feeling so surprised and excited. You knew within the first minute or two of watching that this was someone who both had immense talent, experience and curiosity about what they do. During those first few years I memorized each of Lisa's videos, I even remember buying a particularly obscure Japanese nail polish from the internet (in a bright mint green!) just because I liked it so much her. I have a funny memory of watching her "boy make up" video again and again and my surly ex boyfriend commenting "well where's the make up here? she's just very good looking!". Well only a girl knows the point of mastery in make up is to get you to ask that question, as naturally gorgeous as Lisa is! Anyways, ever since Lisa has proven time and time again how genuine she is in her love and curiosity about her craft, and I don't think this is something that can ever be fabricated. Throughout these years I have never seen Lisa cater to any trend, personality or brand. For this I really thank her and feel that I have great trust in her taste and knowledge. Living in my home country now it's truly such a hassle to get a hold of her own brand make up, but I always manage to get a hold of at least some of them through travel, acquaintances, and always somehow know I'm never going to be disappointed. Anyway this was long winded and possibly the longest KZfaq comment I ever made but I was touched to see her featured on British Vogue. Lisa truly deserves all the accolades she receives and more in my opinion, I am forever a huge huge huge fan!

Love this lady. I met her when she published her book and she is genuinely incredibly sweet and kind. Spent time talking to each of us and taking photos. So glad she has made her own makeup line, she’s a real one ❤️

Lisa Eldridge and Pat McGrath are my very favorite make-up artists !!! Nobody does artistic, dreamy make-up looks like them (of course they can do cool looks too)! My favorite look of all times from Lisa is the "GOLD LOOK" for Eva Green, I have often made it up for special occasions, whimsical and a very special kind of romantic, a dream!

I learned how to do my makeup in a way that fits my face from Lisa; before being introduced to her through YT I was doing it how magazines and how people who werent makeup artist on YT were telling me, but when I found her she taught me how to do it in the way it makes you look good but still like yourself, shes a true artist.

I just love her so much! A real passionate and successful lady, who is still very much down to earth. She has the loveliest personality and is an incredibly good teacher. I have learned so much from her and love listening to her calm, soothing voice in her videos. There has not been one yet that I did not enjoy. Loved it! I’m creative person, nobody who knows me since I was a toddler can’t remember me without crayons, pens or paper on me all the time. It wasn’t only art what excited me when I was younger, it was a it expression of creativity, one of them was make up, I used to do all my relatives faces for a weeding, them friends for weddings and parties, amateur plays at uni… I never pursue a career as make up artist, I didn’t find any help, advice or support. But I’ve always been very keen in self educating myself about skincare and make up. It was amazing to discover KZfaq and with KZfaq I knew about this amazing woman, Lisa Eldridge, who was so full of knowledge and so generous to share and she was saying the same things I was preaching to my friends. From that day, I’ve grown in confidence, in creativity, passion and I’m more curious than ever. I’m not going to be a make up artist but I love when my family and friends ask for my advice, when they ask me to do their make up in important events in their lives or their daughters lives… I would have love to meet you in your pop up store, but health problems spoiled my plans, I’ll keep trying to meet you some day. It would be a privilege. In the meantime, I’ll keep watching your videos and enjoying your success, because you deserve it. Thanks. Ana.

Such class and elegance again... great segment. Those of us who follow LISA like a puppy on every platform would think we know a lot but there is so much more to learn. Lovely story teller she! The part with the Kit Essentials was lovely, more of those please. I enjoyed that the most ... and of course that big smile at the end of the make-up was 'another best part' at 16:10. Finally a model who doesn't have that awfully sad little look or a smile with sad eyes. This was genuine, coming fromt he heart. More of LISA always, please... ♡♡♡ xx
