I wish Lisa talked about temperature controls with the chosen kettles as well as the goose-necked kettle (which only should really be used for coffee/tea). I find one of the most important things I want in a kettle is the ability to control the temperature. Helps keep teas and coffees from scalding in too-hot water and allows for controlled temperatures for things like making standing crust pies.

@Wu Me Look for "variable temperature" in the product description. :) Some models are able to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius and vice versa.
@catherinehubbard1167
@catherinehubbard1167 4 жыл бұрын
Patrick Ellett : variable temp is also necessary for making green or oolong tea. Green tea especially is ruined by boiling water, bitter and with all the good nuances gone. 170-190 degrees is best, depending on the tea type. Oolong needs a temp between green tea temp range and boiling. I drink mostly green tea made with loose tea leaves in a ceramic teapot, so an electric kettle that only boils is of no use. I'd like for them to review variable-temp kettles. As you point out, heated water at a range of preset temps is far more useful than only boiling water.

@@lmittel Just remember glass is much more dangerous with boiling liquid. I'm not bothered by stainless steel and markings on the inside of the steel to know how much water you put in. Can not break like glass if something hits into it for example. Not sure why Lisa or anyone needs to see completely through a kettle to understand how much water is in there.

@@helpfulnatural there’s no way to know if the temperatures are accurate before buying it if channels like this are only testing for super simple things like “does it rock on its base” or “can I see how much water I’m putting in it”. Tea shouldn’t be made with boiling water, it releases too much of the oxygen which tea needs to brew. If the controls aren’t accurate, it’s a waste of time having to return it.

All stainless or all glass interior is most important to me. ANY plastic being exposed to heat or even steam is instant disqualification. It's a huge pain to find kettles that fulfill that single requirement.

I purchased the winner almost 2 years ago and we use it three times a day for coffee. French press and sometimes for a quick pour over. I haven't had a drip machine in 5 years once I learned how easy it was to brew it that way. Oxo products are usually your best bet and luckily, there's always so many great Oxo finds at Home Goods because it can get a little spendy to buy it all up.

As a english tea drinker, the things i look for are How many watts (3kw = best) If it has a cordless base (don’t need to unplug to fill, 360 degrees base is the best type ) How easy it is to fill under tap ( tall can be problematic ) If there's a washable lime scale filter ( a lot of hard water in UK ) Able to see the waterline is a nice feature

OXO has a new one with different temperature settings. I’m a big tea drinker but, prefer there regular one. Most important thing with tea is to steep it for the right amount of time. Most black teas and hibiscus teas steep for 5 minutes. Most green teas steep for 3 minutes. Japanese Sencha and Japanese green tea with matcha only steep for two. I let my water cool a bit in mug for green tea. English black tea I make in tea pot, I use boiling water. I use three teaspoons of loose tea and two tea cups of water. I get my loose Japanese green tea from Harney & Sons in NYC. They have a website as well as store.

It’s funny, I just got a new kettle, and my criteria were pretty different. I wanted to be able to fit my hand in it comfortably, to put eggs in without fear of cracking, and I *wanted* steel sides, with no window, so I could safely cool the sides with water to clean in the event of a mid-boil egg crack. OXO is awesome, but I’ll stick with my...well some brand I’d never heard of from Amazon. Maybe I’ll regret it if it burns out soon, but so far, so good Oh, and I’m surprised she didn’t talk about being able to set temperature, or “keep warm” features!

I appreciate you guys doing the research. I have wasted a lot of money and filled too much space in our landfill with products that were worth neither. I haven't been let down by your reccomendations yet. Now, if I can find your equivalent for products in other rooms of the house. . . . . Random idea, have you guys ever thought about doing a segment or series about setting up your kitchen? My friends daughter got her first apartment and her setup was a mess. When she mentioned she couldn't cook, I jumped in. "Half your problem is your kitchen set up. You shouldn't have your pots, pans and cooking utensils 3 steps or more from your stove. Your spices are to far away. Your baking stuff should go on the far side of your work bench so its handy to put what you prepare on the counter in them. . . .~deep inhale~ also. . . . .." when I got done she said, "I don't know where anything is?" I told her, "stand in the place you need it and it will be within reach". A week later she called me, "Auntie! I made my boyfriend dinner last night and I didn't burn ANYTHING!" LOL not everyone has an auntie Lark.

My most frequent use of an electric kettle is to prep hot water for making tea with loose leaves in a teapot. What's important is that it cannot be too hot. While black or herbal teas (or coffee) require boiling water, I drink mostly green tea, which requires 170-190 degree water. (The best temp within that range varies with the tea variety.) But NEVER use boiling water for making green tea. It will be horrible, bitter, absolutely ruined. So it would be helpful if you would review variable-temp electric kettles, the only kind I can use for making green tea. Oolong tea is also harmed by boiling water; a temp between the green tea range and boiling is optimal.

Many people who buy these use it for teas and coffee mainly a facy I'm sure you are aware and to not mention the kettles that have temperature settings, their accuracy or pouring etc is a let down. Hopefully you have another video coming for these types of kettles, i.e. The kind we actually buy and use.

Normally agree with atk reviews but electric kettles are something I use between 5-10 times per day (British, drink tea non-stop). Glass kettles are a pain, delicate and show water spots which make it look dirty even when clean. Bigger isn’t always better, you’re making tea (or coffee) so how much water do you really need - 1 to 1.5 liters is fine. A sizable window is all that’s necessary when combined with an internal LED light. I like oxo products, but that looks like an overpriced fussy pain that isn’t even very quick - granted, they do take longer to boil in the US but nothing about that kettle justifies more than $50 at most.

Some kettles let you choose a range of temperatures to bring the water up to. Do you recommend any that can do this? You end up not wasting more energy than you need (if you're particular about tea/coffee which need temperatures below boiling for optimal flavour). Also some kettles have minimum fill levels of 2 cups, which is too much if you're only brewing single cups of drinks at a time.

NO! For once I say no! I am tired of glass carafes requiring careful handling all the time, - dont bump it when its hot! set it down GENTLY its still glass, dont scratch it, it leads to thermal cracking, clean the water haze off so it looks nice on the countertop; worst, once the glass is broken, chipped or damaged you have to buy a whole new one! Thats why my Hamilton beach stainless steel kettle will be my workhorse! Fill it, trip the switch, a blue light goes on inside the water window, light goes off when its in a full rolling boil. Clean the inside like any other stainless steel saucepan. A practical workhorse. (I drink a lot of tea) Its hot water not a souffle!

@@mantroid From the Coffeemaker Chronicles of the past 10 years, we cracked 1 glass caraf bumping the edge of the granite countertop ( it was full of hot coffee having just finished a full brew) while reaching for coffee cups overhead. Until the replacement was accidentally knocked out of the dish drainer jostling for room among baking sheets and saucepan lids during a washing up session between batches of cookies. It did that slo-mo bounce across the island before skiddering over the edge and shattering on the tile floor! seriously? really? Two brand new glass carafes from new Mr Coffee broke from just normal handling. Both that broke DID NOT HAVE THE METAL BAND around the lower part. The old one did have one. Went back and got the model with the BANDED carafe - that was about 10 yrs ago. I still use it - just like the first (old) one. 🤩

What about energy? In the spring and autumn a kettle in a household with 3 or more dwellers can be the highest consuming appliance of electricity.. There are vacuum kettles with small electric heating elements that consume a fraction of the electricity of these kettles. They keep a relatively high water temperature for boiled water for several hours. They are more expensive initially but save more money on the long run.

@brendanstanford5612 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know where you live, but powering these small 11-1800 watt appliances for 10 minutes cost around 10 cents here in the western U.S. Either you live somewhere with unreasonable electricity rates, or you are extremely cheap
@ek9772
@ek9772 5 жыл бұрын
Brendan Stanford I am very cheap. I make at least three to four cups of hot coffee or tea each day. In addition, I boil water to make hot chocolate or hot soup. This means that I boil a kettle about four times a day. Now, in my cheap home there are several other cheap people doing the same at different hours of the day, and each of these cheap souls boils water in the kettle each time. Assume each person on average boils water in the kettle three times per day, and assume there are four people living in the house. The kettle is, therefore, used 12-times each day in this assumed cheap home. In one year the kettle is used over 4,000 times in this assumed cheap home. If the heating element takes 1,500 watts, then over 1,000 kilowatts are used per year for boiling water. At 10-cents per kilowatt this is an expense of $100 per year. The expense is not large, but an efficient vacuum kettle would cost $30 per year. More importantly is the source of your energy. If you are really cheap like me, and you live off grid, then you have a finite amount of electrons at your disposal each day, and minimizing waste might make the difference between boiling water and cooking a roast in the oven, and being cheap in this case might make a difference between drinking and eating or just drinking.

I had a Capresso and the temperature was never right. Then I the second one I bought was even worse, half of the time it would just kick off and leave me with tepid water. My Breville has been working every day for two years, has temperature settings that are accurate for popular beverages. The only thing I really hate about it is that it beeps constantly. Every time you pick it up, place it down, turn it on, when it finishes, if you bump it, BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEEEEEEEP. It's really annoying and serves no purpose to beep every time you pick it up or set it down. I'm surprised by how slipshot this review is. Did the cameraman have only 3 minutes of time to film?

I am NOT paying $75 for a hot water kettle that doesn't even have a temperature control setting. Many teas do not require being boiled to death. Perhaps I want my miso bloodwarm. Also, noise? How long does it take to boil? Warranty? I really expected a better review from this channel. Do it over again.

You should never have to reach in to clean an electric kettle. You should only be boiling water in them, and when they have calcium buildup, they can easily be cleaned using vinegar, which will dissolve the calcium within a minute or two, depending on the acidity of the vinegar used.

They seem like great kettles, according to your criteria (except, DID any of them produce "off" flavors?). But, NO GLASS. Why should I pay $80 for a kettle that I have to look out for? What happens when it falls over, empty, on granite? The Krups one is a no, but I have a metal one (with a water gauge) that has survived 10 years (and counting).

Totally agree on the glass vs. metal debate. So, why oh why did I buy a metal one??? Everything else about it is great, all the necessary features mentioned, but you can't see inside easily without taking the lid off. Then there's steam...sigh.

This review does not live up to your usual quality. This product segment is so much wider than tested. Have a Breville tea pot. It’s awesome. Temperature settings for several types of tea, can be programmed, built like a Rolls-Royce, and the most handsome appliance in my kitchen. Please bury me with it, don’t want to be without a really good hot cup of Earle Grey or English Breakfast.

It is not important to see the water level inside. I can boil slightly more than I need and measure the hot water. A glass kettle could shatter. I've refilled my hot metal kettle on many occasions without cooling it down first.

Not a very thorough testing and comparison here! I bought an inexpensive Mr. Coffee kettle and while it says that the water is 205, then I test it in the French press it's only at 200. I set it at 212 for black tea and it's still never gets past 200.
