I’m using the Hana SL Mono and it sounds great! When many were having a problem playing the new Chet Baker Picture Of Heath, saying it was cut too hot, I had no problems and it sounded wonderful!

Thanks for the review and opinion, i felt the same as you when i tried the first time a mono record with a good turntable and mono cartridge... it blow me away, now i love good mono records in my setup with the AT33Mono. So difficult to find good mono records but when it happens it's a special day for me... Thanks for your job!

I enjoyed this. Been waiting for someone to do this. The results were very interesting. From what I understand around 1966 in the us is when a lot of mono lps started to be pressed on new machines built for stereo pressings. That the groove depth and width on mono lps after that were the same as stereo and were different from pre 66 pressings. If that is correct another interesting test would be to play a post 66 mono pressing on both tables and see if you hear any difference. Good post!!

I've heard similar comments about that. I guess only listening tests in the future will give an indication if it is actually true...thank you very much for your outstanding comments 👏

Mono's real heyday was a long one going from the beginning of the electrical era in the late 1920's to the mid 1950's. When stereo playback became practical via the vinyl LP, and stereo tape machines, it in most cases "could" be more satisfying than the full mono mixdown -but not all cases. RCA's "Living Stereo" releases sound good and maybe better than a lot of stereo today. Many early stereo recordings used mic mixers which toggle the input to full left - then center - then full right vs mixers with pan-pots to position the apparent sound source in the panoramic stage. I guess a dedicated mono playback rig "should" use one speaker system rather than two spatially separated cabinets in parallel.

Thanks for the good review. I agree with you and have been listening to mono for a long time. Unfortunately mono is more complicated than stereo but if your aiming at jazz records from mid to end of 50' a true mono cartridge is perhaps better. Needle has only lateral movement and suspension. Usually Moving Coil which need a step up transformer.....and a good excuse to buy more gear :) Artist is more present and, as you say, "in your face" Have uploaded some examples on my channel. Thanks again!

Great video! Actually, this is insight I really need because I'm thinking of getting a second turntable for cartridge swap outs- namely, for including mono cartridges. Many recordings are just 'better' in mono, from my readings. Example being the early Rolling Stones albums. (I have that mono set of theirs, too, so I'm really needing to try out mono system) Very much appreciated, Kenny!

What about mono recordings on CD? I have plenty of them, including an opera recording that originally was on a 78 rpm record. The CDs were remastered but no gimmicks were added (like reverb) to make it sound like stereo. Digitally remastered mono done right sounds great.

Mono vs. stereo. A good comparison can be made on a CD of the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album. Twelve of the tracks are in mono, twelve are in stereo. Which do I like better? Honestly, I'm happy with either one. In opera recordings - and maybe on vocal recordings generally - voices sound fuller in mono. As you note, the sound is confined between the speakers as opposed to spread out with stereo. Stereo gives you a sense of depth, though a good mono recording can also, just not to the extent the way stereo can.

I have the Beach Boys Pet Sounds albums issued by Analogue Productions (45 RPM stereo album and 45 RPM mono album) and the stereo album clearly sounds better on my system.

Update: Got an entry level AT mono cartridge for my Technics and Duke Ellington's - Masterpieces. I'm blown away. Can't believe mono had such a sound stage. It had this incredibly warm sound (from the tube equipment used to record it) and felt like Duke and his orchestra were playing an intimate concert in my house. Not as wide as stereo but definitely not one dimensional. I'm going to have to get some other LPs now

Congratulations 😊. I have noticed a nice difference also, especially with older mono records. I will probably update my mono cartridge sometime in 2024 as I have a lot of older mono records.

I've always heen curious about this now I'm going to have to save up for that Audio Technica cartridge. I'm really interested in how the early to mid era Beatles sound in the mono presses. One of my favorite mono recordings thats only out on CD (other than the original cut down 45) but needs to be pressed into a 12" mono single is the extended version of James Brown - Soul Power. It has so much dimension to it for mono even over CD and feels like James Brown is in your room. I bet it would be magical on a mono cartridge.

Two items: 1) I am pleased that it worked out for you. Your listening experience, as good as it was, should improve much more when you upgrade your mono cartridge. I have read that you must use a mono cartridge to do justice to mono records. I have never heard the differences that you described, because I own no mono records and have no mono cartridge. If I had the $ to venture into that arena, I would. Your evaluation was very good. I almost feel like I was there and heard it, too. 2) I know that jazz is great. But I never got into it. But I have heard many people speak highly of MIles Davis, both in his talent and also in how well his songs are recorded. So I listened to a few parts of "Kind Of Blue" on youtube, and now I understand what all the fuss is about. Now I have to hunt down a good Kind Of Blue stereo pressing. Do you know which stamper codes sound best, or which stamper codes to avoid? Any other jazz bands I should check out? I know next to nothing about this, other than you can never finish exploring the world of jazz. The catalog is endless. Any suggestions on great bands or great albums?

In terms of the Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" album, in my opinion the analogue productions 33 RPM or 45 RPM sets are great but they are expensive. I did a videos on my top 10 jazz and jazz fusion records and there may be some jazz albums in those recommendations that you may like. Thank you very much for viewing my video and your comments 😀

I LOVE your channel and I love your tests. You’ve done everything I’ve always wondered about because I dislike mono on my stereo cart. Funny enough I then see you have the EXACT same cart lol. I have a Rega Apheta 3 as well and I don’t like how mono plays on it. It’s as if the cartridge is too good that it traces every nuance of the groove, that it makes mono come across as a bad stereo sound. If that makes sense. I’m sure it does since you have the same cart.

The Drifters had their golden hits album done AAA in 2021 to mono and can be had for $20 sealed. It’s a must if you’re getting into mono stuff now.

Stereo is for you alone, sitting in that exact spot in the middle of your sofa. Mono is for deep sharing with friends and family, with everybody sitting in the sweet spot, no matter how they all spread out throughout the room. Oh, and you do get sound-staging, too! Only it happens subconsciously inside your mind. And: IMHO, 99% of all music ever recorded would be best in mono. Stereo only for LP's specifically intended for stereo, say Pink Floyd. Alone. In that Spot. 😉

I have listened to mono records by using the mono switch on my preamp. Perhaps you could try, if your preamp has a mono setting, doing a comparison on the same system, same turntable, to get an even better sense of any differences. Or did I not understand the process?

I occasionally listen to mono recordings, digitally, though a single mono amp through a single speaker. That is also a way to get close to what the original recording and mixing people were working to present. I don't have a mono cartridge, but I definitely want one now! The other question is, did original mono records have a V-shaped groove, or was it flatter with the wiggles going side to side only? I know a true mono cartridge is essentially not made to flex in the up and down direction but only side to side.

I'm not totally sure about the groove configuration of older mono records although I must say the order mono records with the mono cartridge that I have sounds great. I have not tried my cartridge with newer records yet. Thank you very much for your comments ✌️
