It's disappointing Bitches Crystal was blocked. It is a good song. I think the main point about side 2 it shows just how versatile ELP were. They put a humous song or two on almost every LP to break up the mood. That was always part of the ELP roller coaster and I enjoyed that about ELP. I really like Infinite Space great prog rock. The Only Way is a anti-religion song, very powerful. And the humous tribute to Eddy Offord their engineer is just fun. It's ham or cheese sandwiches after the session. As you said the band having fun after a big recording session. I do not know if they sprang this song on Eddy Offord as a surprise or if it was a in the moment thing. Eddy's reaction in the mixing room would have been interesting. Great reaction Jim thanks a million! Looking forward to more ELP.

"Ham or cheese" was the actual voice of the lady at the studio who brought them sandwiches. It was always ham or cheese. They did spring Are You Ready on Eddy, their beloved and brilliant sound engineer.

And yes, the sound of a band having fun. Personally, I love that because they really did battle things out personally to the detriment of their ability to continue working together. For the same reason, I adore watching them look at each other in live performance and beam with such obvious joy. They all three absolutely loved to play together.

Greg Lake's voice really shines on this side of the album. Bitches Cristal, The Only Way/ Infinite Space and Time and a Place are really great tracks. You get the feeling they didn't have enough material to flesh out side two hence the inclusion of the jokey songs. On the other hand they lighten the mood, It never really bothered me as the rest of the album is so good.

That "Rick Wakeman" part is the Toccata from Bach's Toccata and Fugue in F Major. Emerson very frequently quoted Bach in his music.

As I mentioned in a comment on side 1, Are You Ready Eddie was dedicated to Eddie Offord, the engineer who recorded the album. "Are you ready Eddie to pull those fingers down?"

"Ham or cheese" was a reference to a woman who worked in the studio. She would come in to see if they wanted food, and the two kinds of sandwiches she always had as choices were always ham or cheese. If you listen, they reference "a bit of five minutes is all it lacks". As has been mentioned, they did the joke mostly improved "Are You Ready, Eddy" for Eddy Offord, and it filled up the last five minutes of the album. Kind of like how Lucky Man was thrown onto the end of their first album to fill up the time!

That's weird, I recalled Are You Ready Eddie as having been on Trilogy. Keith Emerson was very into rag piano and Aaron Copland. When I was backstage for one of ELP's concerts, after the encore Keith sat down at a piano that sat backstage and spent probably the better part of an hour expending the rest of his bionic energy pounding out solid rag.

Good to have you back! ELP showed me what was possible with rock married to classical. I would suggest the first ELP (Dove cover) and then for some fun 'Pictures at an Exhibition'. umm -- it's not the Ravel orchestration. I am not totally crazy about 'Brain Salad Surgery' which to me, was their final great album. (Yes, 'Works" and 'Welcome Back' have some good material, but... (IMHO). Palmer was still touring a few years ago, with an amazing guitarist instead of keyboards.

Weirdly enough, I bought a cd of this album a month or so ago....Certainly enjoyed it in the car....I dunno what my 21 year old daughter thought of it when I drove her to work one day.....but I suppose she's used to the old man playing weird stuff !!! She likes weird stuff herself so..... I most certainly did enjoy this album, as ELP seemed to have passed me by (although I have heard odds and sods over the decades). Some of Emerson's organ playing is very Jon Lord.....absolutely excellent. Good review again Jim...

I'm confused. Why was one song blocked but not the whole album? Does someone else have rights to that one song (was it used in a movie or something?) And songs like "Jeremy Bender" and "Are You Ready Eddie" were part and parcel of early ELP (i.e., "Nutrocker", "Benny the Bouncer", etc.) I'd agree with those who say if you really want to understand ELP you should go back and do the debut and Pictures at an Exhibition next before going on to Brain Salad Surgery.

This was one of my first albums, but I was from the future and therefore preferred side one. In fact after maybe three listens, I never revisited side two on purpose. The wethead is dead. No more 50s music please. What I think you would really love is the live version of Tarkus from "Welcome Back My Friends". It is superior to the studio version in every way. The energy is doubled, and Aquatarkus gets some groovy new synth and improvisation. It may, in fact, be my favorite thing they ever did. PS Have you heard Bosch?

@@JimNewstead Definitely do not miss it. I know that if you enjoy the original, you will like the live one at least as much...and my bet is that it will overtake it as your preferred version. Especially Aquatarkus, and especially with headphones. The whole album is great, but that one really stands out to me. "Seconds Out" by Genesis is another outstanding live concert not to miss.

I disagree. Their music is the expressions of who they are in their entirety, there is more serious moments there are more playful moments; they love different genre of music, being all of them extremely musically cultured and they have great sense of humor and sarcasm. The point is that the entirety of who they are, what they like, how they feel, they are capable to express it in their music fantastically and they are absolutely brilliant and fascinating musicians even when they make jokes, like "are you ready Eddie".Love the, also because they like you to relax, with Jeremy Bender and then smash you with a bomb like Bitches Crystal. What a pity couldn't be included.

The spoken bit at the end is a charwoman (?) saying "They've only got ham or cheese," and then Palmer responds "Ham...or cheese?" At least I think it's a charwoman. Possibly it's one of the band mimicking what they thought a charwoman would sound like.

Why was Bitches Crystal blocked? It can't possibly be because it has the word "bitches" in it. There are at least a dozen other videos featuring this track on KZfaq. Also, when are you going to do Brain Salad Surgery? You'll have to do it as one video, because the epic "Karn Evil 9" spans both sides of the LP.
