Hi Jim. Fugazi is a bold start exploring the classic Marillion era🙂 Fugazi was the difficult second album. They were constantly on tour and had to come up with a new album. They had no material and were writing the album while being on tour. A lot of pressure which can be heard in the songs and the production. The band was never satisfied with the final mix. In fact when the final mix was presenred to them, they thought it was a rough mix, and they were quite horrified that this was the mix that would end up on record. All four Fish era albums have been remixed in the last two years. The new mix of Fugazi adds more warmth to the overall sound and improves the drum sound quite a bit. But it will always be the worst sounding album out of the first four albums. I always loved Fugazi, the forgotten one, the one before Misplaced Childhood, where they took of into stardom🙂. Best songs for me, Assassing, Incubus and (of course) Fugazi.

I bought all albums with Fish back then and the first five or six albums with Steve. Still have to find out about the latest albums. I love both singers. Fish for his sharp lyrics and voice, Steve for his warm voice and also great and deeper lyrics. This is a great album but I prefer Clutching at straws. The Thieving Magpie is a great live album. I can recommend Fish’s solo albums and live concerts.

Hey Jim, just found your channel (sorry, bit slow) and really enjoying. I actually found you via your Going for the One videos. I think I share your sentiments on that one - just "wow". More specifically to this video, I left school in '83 and, 6 months later, found myself on the dole. Signing on, I was asked what I wanted to do - so I said "be a roadie" (well, obvs). My DHSS handler laughed in my face and that gave me the impetus to pursue that dream. Cut forward 6 months and I'd got a gig with Light and Sound Design in Birmingham and my first tour was the Fugazi tour with Marillion. It was amazing! They were the nicest bunch - band and crew - and really looked after me (Iwas a fairly innocent 19 year old). There is an amazing venn diagram where you get to follow your passion (lighting in my case) and then discover you adore the music of the band you are lighting. For that reason, Fugazi has a very special place in my heart. After that tour I was offered a Kajagoogoo tour - I passed! Some years later a friend said "So, you accepted a tour with a band whose fan-base consisted almost entirely of socially awkward teenage males and then turned down a tour with a band whose fan-base consisted almost entirely of highly excitable tenage girls?! Are you OK?" Fair point! Regardless, they were and remain an astonishing, class act. Right, off now to trawl through your archives - all the best. Matt

I thought it was just because I was a fledgling guitarist and Marrilion fan that made me like Rothery so much. But I'm not so sure now. Listening to this again brought every single note back to me, decades later. He is certainly underrated. There is a reason and purpose to every note he plays. And the analogy to Gilmore on this front becomes almost inevitable. But the whole sound of hearing this album again makes me feel like I'm 14 again. Which is odd. Because I'm pretty sure I wasn't 14 when I got hooked on it in my youth..

@@inthewildwoods My 'joke' aside, I can totally relate. The 'adventure' of buying music, with real money is sadly long gone. Marrilion and Floyd (and later Jethro Tull) is exactly my path too. And the only band that has interested me since is Babymetal. Maybe give them a try; but be cautioned that any track you listen too is _not_ going to be like the next you listen to. 🙃

The first Marillion albums with Fish are all excellent. Of the four, Fugazi is probably my least favourite, yet still has plenty of great tracks. I was 16 when i first saw Marillion (Reading festival 1983) and they blew me away. They opened up with the 18 minute Grendel and were so different to the hard rock/metal that i'd been playing at the time. They totally changed my musical outlook, and i still love the band, and those early albums, to this day..

Fugazi was my introduction to Marillion oh so many years ago. And while I do still love the album, I've never really cared for the sound on this record compared to the rest of their work. It's better on vinyl at least. Anyway, this was where they started making their own sound and you can hear the roots of what they'll be producing in another 40 years. And now that you've jumped back in to hear some of Fish's work, may I humbly suggest you find a copy of his "Raingods with Zippos" album, which features work from both John Wesley and Steven Wilson on. Cheers! And yeah, the Jester was kind of their schtick back then.

Interesting to hear this again after a very long absence. The Friday Rock Show was more diverse than perhaps you remember, at least in its early days. It began with a two hour live concert by Yes, which came as a shock to someone tuning in for John Peel, this before the NWOBHM had come of age, and Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd usually figured in the end of the year top 10. This was the first Marillion album I bought. I still wasn't fully sold on the band, but this and hearing some live stuff, convinced me at the time. I think Assassing and Punch and Judy stand up pretty well, but Jigsaw is a case of, "cut to the solo," and Emerald Lies is a bunch of ideas in search of a song. On to side two.

About Harlequins... I don't know if you've heard it but Genesis did a song (that I love, on Nursery Crymes) called Harlequin... Hello Jim, I find myself stopping at your channel often and this time Marillion caught my eye. I am a huge fan of the Fish era version so the Fugazi LP certainly caught my eye. I recently sold my original LPs of the Fish era and was wondering where you found yours? Just wanting to know where my babies went to. I live near Cleveland and bought my originals back when they first came out. I've got CD copies of them all so I'm not missing the music! Oh, and my reason for selling? My wife and I are basically empty nesters and I've got about 2,500 cd's and lp's here and there and I don't want to move the albums when we leave this place. Other than that I love your appreciation for most all types of music. It's probably on par with mine. The channel is one of the best ones for reactions. Keep on doing what you're doing, oh and I really like the idea of reviewing album sides instead just single cuts. Take Care..bob

It's good prog rock Jim...I really am a fan of the Fish era (rather like the Gabriel/Collins thing in Genesis 1980 onwards etc) but I'm of a certain age methinks...I like Fish's vocal delivery with the theatrical stuff going on at the same time....So "in your face" when necessary...As for the band, they were on fire after that superb debut album.....Pete Trewathas is just superb on the bass...!!! Rickenbacker I think still on this one perhaps ? I like this album....1984 but they were doing stuff that Genesis weren't.....It filled a gap with me....and the next two, in my opinion, were also excellent but it burnt Fish out perhaps ? Simple Minds......Hmmm ? I prefer some of their earlier albums.....Empires & Dance (I bought the "I Travel 12"" back in 1980), Sons & Fascination/Sister Feelings Call and New Gold Dream etc......I'm a big fan of Derek Forbes' bass playing on the earlier stuff.....

For me the Fish era albums are a very uneven lot, and I rarely listen to any of them these days. Of the four, I put Fugazi in second place, ahead of the debut and Misplaced Childhood but behind Clutching at Straws. The production is very "of its time" (I'm curious if they actually did win over any Simple Minds fans), but there's no denying the raw energy that comes through. Fish was a pretty polarizing character back then, and I sense the UK media decided quickly that he was "Not Cool". In some ways, I get the sense Marillion have had to live with their association with him ever since (even after SH came on board), which is pretty unfair.

Thank you so much for doing Marillion again it’s nice for to listen to how terrible they were in the 80’s to my ears but so great to those original fans it’s not my era so I don’t like it musically but it does have great musicality and I’m really not a fan of fish I just hate his tone it’s too harsh for my ears this is their 2nd worst worst album in my opinion , I don’t ever really listen to 80’s Marillion apart from seasons end but I do keep the song assassin in my catalogue it’s the only one I l play on this album, jigsaw would of been a favorite as I like the keyboard playing and when that solo kicks in I just love it I’ll keep an eye out to see if H’s has done a live version of this?! Despite not liking fish’s Marillion I did really enjoy listening to this again to remind how far and great they’re become and I’m a fan of Marillion as a whole so I can’t hate on it if I was alive in the 80’s I’m sure I would of loved it- for me on this album the stand out is Mark Kelly’s playing, it reminds me of when I first listened to a really old band called Magnum first albums on their back catalogue and hearing how strange their early music Emerald eyes makes me think of them So yup really enjoyed this thank you

Really enjoyed your perspective. The drums on Misplaced Childhood are for sure better, the next album. On the harlequin thing, I REALLY hope you get to Script for a Jester's Tear, I think once you hear the title track, you will get it. The Harlequin is somewhat self referencing I think. But Yeah the 1st album is so solid for being a debut, really. Script for a Jesters tear and Misplaced Childhood AND Clutching at Straws, all very strong albums, Musically and Lyrically and vocally.

You must keep trying. It really is brilliant. Put Gaza on or Invisible man or anything really. Try with whiskey and low lights. That often helps. It will suddenly click around 5he 5th scotch👍🏻

I agree, the 80s drum production is the weak point. A remix would be amazing...

Drum sounds from the eighties? Blame the long obligatory drum solos of the seventies. Good time to browse the t-shirt tables (except for Rush or Led Zeppelin :)

Listened to this album in the 80s. But Fish's shrieking vocal sounds (can't even call it singing) in the more aggressive parts are just absolutely unlistenable to me today. It's like listening to a Llama being tortured with an electric sander. Fish sounds OK and is on pitch on the softer vocals, but that's about it. Today I'm a Hogarth fan through and through. Give me the solfulness of "Marbles", "This Strange Engine" or "Sounds That Can't Be Made" over "Fugazi" any day!
