Time to change gears and go to "Ray of Light" or "Erotica". Both are completely different from other Madonna albums and also completely different from each other as well. Erotica is an album for adult listeners, with controversial lyrics about sex, romance, relationships, social issues, and the sound is early 90's trip-hop, hip-hop and deep-house oriented. Ray of Light on the other hand is an emotional journey through an espiritual awakening, with lyrics about fame, motherhood, death, religion, and spiritual life, and it's very electronic music, pure electronica, but very emotional, intimate, soulful and touching, and with a lot of ethnic sounds and feels from India and the Middle East.

When the song Music broke in 2000 there was NOTHING LIKE IT on the radio. The sounds were so fresh. Mirwais' glitchy electronics on Music and Don't Tell Me were revolutionary. In fact, with every album she released, Madonna was AHEAD of the curve and a TRENDSETTER in music for 25 YEARS! (1983-2008) until she released Hard Candy and suddenly fell behind.

So you've done: Confessions (2005), American Life (2003), Music (2000), in reverse order. It makes sense to continue backwards through her discography... Ray of Light (1998 electronica), Something to Remember (1995 ballads compilation), Bedtime Stories (1994 RnB), Erotica (1992 Deep House/Hip Hop), I'm Breathless (1990 jazzy/musical 1930s style concept album), Like a Prayer (1989 autobiographical masterpiece), True Blue (1986 pop), Like a Virgin (1984 bubblegum pop), Madonna (debut 1983 dance pop).

Madame X would be a strange one to start a Madonna journey on as it's probably her most divisive album. Even though I rate it as her Magnum Opus. The risk would be too great that she might not continue with other albums. I'm not mad that she chose Confessions as her gateway album. It was super popular with broad mass appeal (even though I rate it low because I like experimental Madonna.)@@softshallow7435

I've always had this theory that Madonna enjoyed the success with the "Ray of Light" album, withdrew to the distant countryside, learned to play guitar, and then returned, blending acoustic and country elements with electronic music to create "Music," an album that is quite forgotten by Madonna's fans but personally it's one of my favorites.

Music is work of GENIUS!!! And this is exactly what Madonna excels at: introducing something new, a surprise effect-every time. You have to look at her music from the perspective of the time when it was released. It was a completely new thing, with new sounds and a mix of different instruments. It involved a lot of experimenting and creating new sounds for future generations. Without Madonna, nothing would be the same today. She paved the way and opened so many doors for everyone who followed. In my opinion, this album, along with Ray of Light and American Life, are her three best albums-not only in her repertoire but also in music history as some of the very best. Please do Ray of Light next -> in my opinion unbeatable - The best of the best!!!!

Hi Beth! Not sure if anyone has mentioned yet,but the opening line from ‘What it Feels Like for a Girl’ is actually from a movie. Do a search for ‘Cement Garden’ and the scene with that quote should pop up. Or add ‘Girls can wear jeans’ to narrow it down if needed. By the way, loving your Madonna reactions.Your ‘American Life’ reaction is the best one on KZfaq by far!!! ‘Music’, whilst having some great moments always felt a little disjointed to me. I can see what the album was intended to be in a cohesive sense, but it just didn’t quite pull it off. Keep up the good work! With love from the UK 🇬🇧

Runaway Lover and Amazing were produced by William Orbit, he produced her previous album Ray of Light. The song Music was a huge global worldwide #1 song and #1 dance song. Don't tell me was also a hit. The type of music you are describing as acoustic plus production effects is typically referred to as folk electronica.

Thank you again for reacting to Madonna! As written before she's my favorite artist and you're one of my favorite reactors, so this is a perfect match. Lenghty comment ahead. You mentioned Mirwais a lot in this video however he isn't the only person that produced the album. After the Ray of Light sessions, Madonna reunited with William Orbit, who produced most of it as well as some soundtrack songs with her afterwards, to do Music with her. However she felt that the stuff made with him was more of the same so she either kept the more dance-y tracks (Runaway Lover and Amazing), reworked them (Gone was reworked by Mark Stent who also reworked X-Static Process on American Life, and Mysore Style was reworked into Cyber-Raga, a japanese bonus track), or scrapped them (Arioso, La Petite Jeune Fille, Like an Angel Passing Through My Room, Liquid Love, Run; all very good tracks that leaked but Madonna doesn't like to repeat herself). She then met Mirwais who worked on the other tracks: Music, Impressive Instant, I Deserve It, Nobody's Perfect, Don't Tell Me, and Paradise. Hollywood and Intervention from American Life were intially written during the Music sessions as well. She also met Guy Sigsworth who did What It Feels Like for a Girl. If you disliked the vocoder in Nobody's Perfect, you might dislike Madame X, her last album, which was produced in part by Mirwais. It's full of that vocoder effect, although the lyrics are more similar in style to American Life, more serious and political in its content, dealing with world issues. But you seemed to like the three William Orbit tracks in this reaction, which means that you might like Ray of Light, my favorite album, which is more "spiritual heavy". I hope that you will check her videos as well, which are an integral part of her artistic work. Seeing you watching the Britney videos for the first time was really great, and if you liked her videos, you will definitely like Madonna's videography. The American Life era has some of her best videos.

The thing I love about Madonna so much is that every single album is like in its own whole universe!! Her earlier albums are very much pop but even bedtime stories is such an experimental album pretty early in her career. She is always keeping us on our toes!!!! But favorite album is ray of light!!! Even though before that, I could not decide between true blue, like a Virgin and bedtime stories!!! There are a few songs from each album that I cannot choose between. And the immaculate collection is perfect to just put on after you have listened to all the other albums, of course!

First of all, amazing reaction! I like how sincere your opinions are. Anyway, I feel like Mirwais' production is very easy to get an "overdosis" from, especially when you listen to two albums in a row, it can sound too repetitive or too intense as his style is based on autotune, heavy mixing and bizarre combinations. These features are very unique for sure, but for us regular, distant from electronic listeners, it can be too much if we are not in the mood. With that being said, if you plan to move on with her discography chronologically, you will definitely be surprised with what she's got in store, as Ray of Light is not only one of her best albums, but also one of the best records ever made according to multiple critics, reviews and listeners. There you will find very personal lyrics, transcending sounds and her best vocals in any of her studio albums due to her intense lessons for the Evita movie (1996), a musical that required her to extend her reach and technique. I hope you continue to have fun while listening to Madonna, her discography combined with her videos, attitudes and uniqueness can surely prove how no one can beat her in the pop game, she really is the queen. Thank you and love from Brazil :)

What I love about Madonna is her ability to go with her gut and to no doubt it for one second. This was the album to make after Ray Of Light , in ROL (not to spoil it for you) she is spiritual and self reflective, in Music she has let go of the things that are holding her back and now we move on to funkier sounds, more experimental, this album feels like a trip through sounds with fun, personal lyrics and it culminates with Gone, one of her best album closers, giving us the passage to American Life

'What It Feels Like For A Girl' was produced by Guy Sigsworth. He worked with Imogen Heap on their Frou Frou project. They only have one album, Details. The first track, 'Let Go', on that album was HUGE when it was released. It was the theme song to the movie Garden State. You should watch the videos for this album as well. The remixes are insane.

You should see the videos for this era. There’s videos for music, don’t tell me, what it feels like for a girl (it’s a dance remix for the video that was banned for being too violent), and also a tour backdrop video for paradise not for me

I’ve been a Madonna fan for almost 20 years already and although I do like Music, it’s not my favorite at all and I see it as a midpoint between Ray of Light and American Life, it is experimental but not in a cohesive and interesting way like American Life, it gives me a feeling of “hmmm let’s try this” and it works but not really… so I see it kinda like a ‘sonic draft’ for what American Life would be, so I totally get your perspective and I agree with a lot of your opinions. I didn’t expect you to like it (based on the many many videos of you I’ve watched already 🥰). “Paradise” is one of my favorite songs from Madonna though, it’s a grower, very reflective, ‘meditational’ lol and interesting. Please react to Ray Of Light, it’s a masterpiece. 🥹🩵

Madonna did a beautiful live version of Paradise (Not for Me) in one of her tours (reinvention?) that showed just how beautiful the harmonies are in that song… and Gone is just so gorgeous, a little sad, but raw and real. So underrated. I think with further listens, when you know what to expect, you’ll get used to the production of some of the more chaotic songs, like Impressive Instant, which are such bops. I absolutely love that one too. The only really clunker on her is I Deserve It. Guy Richie even f’ed up her music. Lol

A very interesting reaction as always! I'm always curious to how people will take "Music". It's very much a product of the 'New Millennium!!' era, and its soundscape is very...well. Interesting, is probably the best way to put it. I loved how often the Madonna spaceship abducted you at random throughout lolol So "Music" and how some songs caught you off-guard, like "Gone" or "Nobody's Perfect", is a result of Madonna having a foot in two doors. She'd just made her (arguably) all-time masterpiece "Ray of Light" with British producer William Orbit and had done some work with him, but was also searching for that 'new sound', which introduced her to Mirwais. There are times on "Music" that you're hearing a bit of both producers, with somewhat mixed results. I've seen some reviewers mention that "Music" serves as a 'bookend' to "Ray of Light" and I've always disagreed; I feel like it's a bridge between "Ray of Light" and "American Life", honestly. Speaking of reviews, there were also some "American Life" reviews that say that it sounds on some songs like Madonna would have 'preferred to be left alone in the studio with her guitar', and I personally felt that way more about "Music" than I ever did about AL. "I Deserve It", "Nobody's Perfect", and "Gone" all should have been completely acoustic, IMHO, but I do love them all in different ways. My best friend loves this album overall more than I do, but it does have a special place in my heart amongst her discography (especially "Gone"). I loved how tripped out you were by the insanity that was "Impressive Instant". A really funny story there is that Madonna deeply wanted it to be the fourth single from the album, but her label at the time, Warner, felt that "Amazing" was a much stronger, far more radio-friendly song and pushed for that instead. Rather than compromise, Madonna scrapped the idea of a fourth single at all and left it at "Music", "Don't Tell Me", and "What It Feels Like for a Girl". This is one of few times I thought her label was right! I adore "Amazing". But if you're ever really in the mood to get tranced out, there's an epic eight minute version of "Impressive Instant" out there remixed by Peter Rauhauffer that is pretty intense. "What It Feels Like for a Girl" was born from Madonna having been the mother of a girl for two years when she wrote the song, thinking of the things she'd had to 'learn' on her own journey that she didn't ever want to have to teach her daughter Lourdes but was afraid the world would try to teach her anyway. It's a much angrier song than it sounds on the surface, but Madonna's best songs have many layers. The music video features only a very beat-heavy club remix and Madonna playing the character of the enraged female who goes on a massive crime spree with a granny she frees from the Ol Kuntz Nursing Home and it is exactly as bonkers as it sounds. Gwen Stefani was inspired by the music video heavily in No Doubt's "Just a Girl" vid. One more funny fact, just because your reaction to the start of "Don't Tell Me" was hilarious -- imagine first hearing this on tape or CD! Back in the day apparently the first pressings of this album came with a note assuring people that their CD was not defective because so many people assumed that the track was skipping for no reason without figuring out it was a purposeful production effect! But I do hope you continue your Madonna journey at some point with "Ray of Light". It is not just one of her very best, it is featured on just about every "Greatest Albums of All Time" list. You will be very entranced, I think. The lyrical content is astonishing and it features some of her absolute best vocals as she'd just filmed the movie version of the musical "Evita" and was still fresh off her Broadway vocal coach lessons lol. It's a very meaningful album for a lot of reasons. (The opening track "Drowned World / Substitute for Love" is one of my favorite songs ever, not just of hers in particular). Thanks again for an awesome video and sorry again for a comment as long as the one I think I left you on your "American Life" reaction, yikes

Runaway Lover is actually Madonna and William Orbit. She and Orbit also produced Amazing. Mirwais is prounounced like Meer-wez. Music is one of my top 3 favorite albums.. very rich with melodies, synths and definitely a head of its time. What It Feels like for a Girl's spoken word comes from Charlotte Gainsbourg's character from the film The Cement Garden.
