@@JimNewstead my pleasure Jim. If you want another band mostly instrumental that plays this fusion of Rock and Symphony check out England’s best kept secret: THE ENID. They played at Stonehenge with Hawkwind in 1984. A phenomenal live band that can sound like an orchestra using only a few keyboards guitar bass and drums. Some albums have vocals which are admittedly an acquired taste but I will steer you toward their best instrumental material. In The Region Of The Summer Stars(1976) Aerie Faerie Nonsense(1977) Touch Me(1979) Six Pieces(1979) Live at Hammersmith Odeon Vol. 1,2. Unbelievable that they can pull this off on stage.(1983) Fand(1985) My favorite tune by far is the incredible masterpiece Punch And Judy Man from Six Pieces.

I first discovered Renaissance with the Ashes Are Burning album. Annie's voice is always magical - you could say it is angelic. Renaissance was very popular in the early 70's in the New York, New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania area. I saw them in concert 3 times. Every concert was fantastic. Annie has the purest voice. Ashes Are Burning and Song of Scherazade are my favorites.

Bit of trivia: The intro to Running Hard was written for organ by French composer Jehan Alain. He called it "Litanies". Unfortunately he was killed while still a young man in WWII. Renaissance did not attribute it for reasons unknown. It was used as a concert opener for years. I was lucky to have seen them for the first time in 1976. This is possibly my favourite album of all time. Great reaction. Nice to see it blow you away.

This is one of my most beloved albums ever. I' ve listened to it so many times when I was a teenager and it formed quite a part of my perception of music. I've listened to this band a few times, including this album. So much to unpack. You hear so many influences , and also their influence on others . They definitely have their own niche , part Moody Blues , part Yes , Jethro Tull , but also Broadway . As a fan of classical, and theatrical music , I find their music very satisfying.

Renaissance started as a project by Kieth Relf and Jim McCarty of the Yardbids to produce a more symphonic sound. After 2 albums and several lineup changes they settled on this group. Their next 7 albums are fantastic then in the 80's the music industry changed and record companies wouldn't record this type of music they were looking at the all mighty dollar.

Annie Haslam is a goddess. The voice of an absolute angel. She barely shows you what she is capable of on side 1. Their fourth album in 1973 which preceded Turn of the Cards is just as well done and has some great tunes such as Carpet of the Sun and Ashes Are Burning. Can’t wait to see what you think of side 2. 🎶

Since you mentioned the bass, note that it is much more prominent in their earlier albums. By this point it starts getting a bit swallowed up by the symphony. John Camp is an excellent bassist. And don’t ignore the first two albums, before Annie Halsam joined. They are good records as well. The original band grew out of the Yardbirds, though none of those original members were still around by the time of “Turn of the Cards.” Have fun exploring!

All of them and many other artists bar none are usually progressive bands I would've sadly overlooked before Opeth made me realise there's no rules to music. There's just great music if you listen. @@JimNewstead Yes, I can echo the 'most undiscovered band of the 70's' chant. With the help of an influential WNEW New York radio DJ Alison Steele, at least the northeast US got to hear Renaissance early and their fan base here is mostly in the NE. No matter, I was firmly in the prog camp then, with the usual line up of Genesis, Moody Blues, Yes, EL&P, etc known, but Renaissance was always a band apart. Female lead, way more classical orientation than others, fantastic lyrics... they were storytellers and really had proper classical chops to extend their compositions into full album sides. Very extraordinary.

Why apologize? Family always comes first (if possible 😋). Don’t forget to rinse your cleaned records with (demineralized) water. If soap remains in the grooves, it will attract a lot of dirt. This is fascinating! What great production, her voice sounds so much more natural and personal than other 'dramatic' female singers like Jefferson Airplane... As for the music, it sounds like it's very heavily influenced by science fiction and hippy ideas/psychadelia... but it's got a kind of earthy realism that sets it apart... kind of like a musical version of the original 'the wicker man' film... her voice is so clear, this could be a contemporary song - the contrast between the subject matter and the modernity of the sound is really... fascinating. that was great. yeah awesome piano

This one's in my mind's jukebox, easily called up. Can't wait to hear with my outer ears, through headphones, with you. Back with a flask, I mean in a flash. db OK then. You DID like it. And I loved your comments, which serve as an aid in describing the music I do NOT care for...and that being the music that IS in your face, yelling at top of lung, redfaced and dying of hypertension. This is gentle, peaceful, adult music for mind, heart and soul. Two things come to mind. How do you NOT know this? And how wondrous that you have their entire catalogue yet to enjoy...not to mention another great side, and song, in Mother Russia...about SoldierNixon, I mean Solzhenitsyn. Gulag Archipelago, etc. I am excited for you. Related story...I saw where Justin played song one of Gryphon, but not the superior song two, "Second Spasm". They play renaissance and medieval music, intermixed with modern forms, but with ancient instruments fusing with contemporary forms. All classically trained at Royal Academy and College, I believe it was. Gentle Giant is like scaled down version of Gryphon, but are probably most similar. There should probably be a separate category for those three bands, but all were certainly progressive. Too bad the progress didn't continue, but reversed itself, largely. I talk too f*ckin' much.

LOL, "It's almost symphonic." Jim, Renaissance DEFINED symphonic/orchestral prog. It's probably not a surprise that some of their music was used for 70s UK TV shows ("The Paper Lads" is one.) IMO this album hasn't aged as well as later ones, and the writing includes holdovers from earlier incarnations of the group (Renaissance had a convoluted evolution before they arrived at this "classic" lineup.) But this is a good place to start -- onward! 😁

Could you call this group somehow neo-classical?

Wait. Was this your first listen to Renaissance? You lucky man - this isn't even their best album - Ashes are Burning is usually regarded as the best and Scheherazade and Other Stories is a close second. The superb female vocals and piano are what make their albums stand out - Annie Haslam is unique, charming, has a huge pure range and was possibly the most beautiful woman in rock at the time (and is still beautiful at 74) I was lucky enough to see the current band about 6 years ago and she can still hit those high notes. Explore further (but you don't need telling!)
