Quite right about offering Ukraine NATO membership. Unfortunately I don't think the USA has the intestinal fortitude to do that under Biden - and if Trump wins the general election, we're in for an even more horrendous future.

Brilliant. Good to hear from a british military man, more than just a political analyst. He remembers history, too, which is of some relevance when talking of an existential war. Defending Ukraine today rings back to siding with Poland back in 1939. Unfortunately not in 1938 for Czechoslovakia, just like the West missed Chechnya, Abkhazia, Ossetia or Crimea loud alerts.

As a U.S. citizen, it is incredibly refreshing to hear a well educated, competent and clearly experienced member of political position (even if retired) clearly state the state of affairs at the moment.

I wish we had this type of commentary here in the US on a regular basis. All we get are media companies throwing bags of mixed garbage to the public.

The world needs a few dozen more leaders like this. Clear thinker, articulate and willing to stand up for principled positions.

Great interview and spot on analysis of the grand strategic situation. I recently listened to another military analysist of high regard who claimed that the American HIMARS was the #1 weapon that has changed the tide of the Russo-Ukrainian War and I had to do a double-take considering that it wasn't until 4-months into the War that this weapon system was made available (crews had to be trained first). In order to understand the true nature of this War and how various weapon systems have impacted it, one must go all the way back to the very beginning and start counting all the "Chicks" from there. Now from a purely weapons standpoint, the advanced importation/gift deliveries of Javelin and NLAW ATGM's followed by Milan's, Panzerfaust-3's, TOW's and Carl Gustov's were important, they in themselves were not the saving grace of Ukraine at the beginning of the War. The true stars of show IMHO of the first week of the War's beginning outside of heroic Ukrainian patriotic fervor and civilian tenacity in a combined Top-3 list were the following, Access to the Starlink Communication Network, the Turkish made Bayraktar TB-2 UAV's and the impressive indigenously made Stugna-P ATGM with its extended range capabilities. And if I wanted to balance my opinion to further argue that the HIMARS was not the end all saving grace of Ukraine, I could point to the deliveries of 800 of the Taiwanese made 860 Revolver Drones via Poland at the same time as the HIMARS was coming into action and said delivery of them really kicked off the beginning of the "Drone War" which is so prevalent now and which is a step down in scalability from the usage of UAV's like the Bayraktar. I am by no means bashing the impact that HIMARS has had on the battlefield or in the operational usage of it. I am just saying that each weapon system that is supplied to Ukraine has taken its place in the descending order in which they are delivered and utilized. The overall list of weapons and systems provided so far is huge and each one brings its own merits and utilization capabilities. And I really think the Starlink system has been the biggest game changer of them all and it doesn't even go "Boom" 😝

I would advocate that any time any minister touches on anything remotely relating to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, they should start their remarks by reminding the public that Russian had previously agreed to respect the sovereign territory of Ukraine and to question the logic and rationale for the three day Special Military Operation, now in its third year.

17 mins: From Dunkirk to Normandy. Exactly! Although the Dneiper is not the channel (so small boats, ferries and a few bridging operations could do the job); airspace and groundspace have changed completely (so drone, infantry & logistical superiority with indirect fire parity may be enough); Russian fortifications and defences are not the Atlantic Wall (so losses should be lighter and opportunities more numerous), there is also only one front (albeit a very long one) and the "Alliance" is not "the Allies". So it will still take enormous and sustained will and work to win. The cost will be less, as will the gains but still overwhelmingly worthwhile.

I need some answers to a few questions: 1. How is rearmament coming along for the west? I know here in the US that rearmament is failing badly. What about Europe? 2. What is the West's strategic endgame, what do we want at the end of the day? I should think we want Russia ejected from all of Ukraine that is west of the Dnieper River as that natural obstacle makes for an excellent defensible border. 3. Is Ukraine being in NATO necessary for Ukraine's defense and the West's defense, or can it be obtained by other means that keep NATO from being committed to defending an indefensible border. 4. Are we taking steps to move Ukraine's electrical grid underground and streamlining logistics by making Ukraine's railroads compatible with Europe's railroad gauge. 5. Is the West prepared to maintain the economic sanctions on Russia so long as Russia is unwilling to renounce its imperialist intentions with Ukraine and Eastern Europe? These are all questions that we need answers to in order to make good policy.

If you take graduated steps in war, you only drag it out. Wars are very wasteful of resources. So the best strategy is to deter first and, if that doesn't work, go big up front. We could have ended this early on if the West took a more unlimited strategy including direct involvement.

NATO led military actions against Libya and Yugoslavia under their own mandates. To say the US should keep funding such an aggressive military organization is unwise. It was designed as a counter to Soviet Warsaw Pact, now it has a pro-war offensive agenda. Still think the US needs more military leadership who have little accountability other than trying to create circumstances that promote its need to exist is a good thing? He's absolutely right, Vladolf Putler has utterly failed in every single strategic goal. Now, his only goal is personal survival. And he's of course willing to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of his countrymen for his personal survival and wealth. The fight over "dirt" is meaningless, without a goal beyond that. And mind you, the invasion is still the "easy part". It's the subsequent occupation that drives up the price to insane heights. That's where the failures of the great powers in the last 150 years resulted from: La Résistance, Partisans, Mujaheddin, Guerillas, Freedomfighters, Jihadis, etc., etc. They all drove up the cost to unsustainable levels.

I don't think its such a bad thing to recruit convicts, depending on what they are locked up for and if they are called up, drafted into the military it is done as fair as any civilian draft and they are put into ordinary units not like Russian convict units, where they are used for suicide missions.

The UK and other European countries are one by one irrelevant. The main problem was of course the US Republicans, who blocked all aid for Ukraine for half an year. The Europeans are only relevant, if they work together. Brexit and the Nationalist governments of Poland and Hungary made the EU look weak and divided in the eyes of Putin. Brexit, Trump and the Republicans did make NATO look weak and irrelevant in the eyes of Putin.

When one believes they are a genius, they have already started to fall.

Ukraine is paying a high price. Ifbwe had been more united behind them from the start with a quick and decisive response i believe many of the current problem would have been avoided. I blame the leaders of the US and Germany. Both leaders were in lock step and so together, Scholtz in Germany representing Europe and Biden in the US representing allies defending the rule of international law, cynically hedged their bets and responded tentatively and put Ukraine through so many hoops for every piece of military equipment even though in 2014 peace agreements were signed. Thank goodness that Zelenskyy is the leader that he is. Imagine if he were the slow moving older man in the White House. Which goes to another point. Ukrainians must feel exhausted and betrayed and whi could blame them. They believed in the EU and democracy and that they were fighting for their children's futures and what was our response? Maybe they feel that the price is too high and have become jaded. What a disgusting game politics it has an emetic effect. If Ukrainians have had enough then we can respect that. I think the proposal of giving putin anything is a recipe for disaster that will cause more problems down the line. I do however think that a trump victory must be factored in. Biden is now seen as a weak candidate and unfortunately I dont think he can win. Maybe the best thing he coukd do for his legacy is accept Ukraine into NATO they have earned it. We see the difference of the young courageous and creative leadership of Ukraine juxtaposed with the sclerotic leadership in international organisations and in the US. We need to get younger people into positions of power and harness that same innovation that Ukraine is demonstrating. The only way to fight creeping authoritarianism is with the energy and strength of those not part of the elite.

Getting adequate weapons in adequate quantities into Ukrainian’s hands is still as big an issue as any other.

Afghanistan was horrendous. The country without war is bad enough. Crimea was a big loss. They wanted a strong influence in the Black Sea. Where is the air support from the west? Prisoners fighting, how will those already fighting welcome this?
