Raising the cost does make it impossible for companies to compete on the international market however. If you want to make anything that imports or exports to a western market, even if that is just a video game, you can't. That is devastating for a national economy. Will that stop the arms industry which needs parts in only small quantities? No. But that is not the goal. The goal is to dramatically increase the cost of fighting the war for Russia. And it is doing that! Will this stop Russia from repairing Mercedes and BMWs? No. But it will destroy their local automotive industry and already has. Will it stop Russia from creating fighter jets? No. But it will destroy their civilian aircraft industry, and already has. This has almost no affect on Russia's war fighting ability. However, over time, if the sanctions remain, this will wipe out a huge part of the Russian economy. That is the goal, and that is working. Putin must now consider whether Ukraine is worth sacrificing such a huge chunk of the Russian economy over. Unfortunately, Putin probably will sacrifice anything at this point, because very likely his own life is on the line if Russia fails in Ukraine. However, other Russian Oligarchs may not see things that way, as their own wealth, income and status is tied to the Russian economy doing well. That's what the west is really hoping for. It may work, which ultimately would also be the best possible outcome for Russians. But it also may not, in which case Russia will become an extremely isolated backwater economy like Iran or North Korea. We shall see.
