You should listen to Sandinista again.. you all missed the boat on this one. Don't worry about how long it is, just listen to it.. Maybe it helps that I grew up with it, and the 12 year-old me loved all 3 records of it!! 1. Sandinista! 2. London calling 3. Combat rock 4. Give em enough rope 5. The clash 6. Cut the crap

You should have included Black Market Clash, where their approach to Reggae really works, especially with Bankrobber.
@jkf9167

Bankrobber is one of my favorites, along with The Prisoner, Jail Guitar Doors, and No Justice/Kick it Over. Along with VU by the Velvet Underground, Black Market Clash is one of the out-of-sequency/compilation-style albums that can't be left out of a band's top albums because doing so omits too much of the band's best music. It'd be my second favorite Clash album after London Calling.

It's a compilation, so you can't include it, or this list would be nuts. The Clash have a lot of songs that are classics but have no studio album homes, like "This Is Radio Clash" or "Armagideon Time" (or got belatedly put on the U.S. version of their debut, e.g. "Clash City Rockers" and "White Man In Hammersmith Palais."

Combat Rock is a masterpiece, with incredible production from Glyn Johns... takes time to get into your head in ways that other Clash lps dont. Their debut is one of the greatest lps ever made - and was voted as such by Sounds - but that's just my two pence.

I’ll heavily disagree with London Calling being their best by a mile since I actually like the US version of the debut more (although I’m not so sure I’d take the original UK version over LC). The rest of my list would be: 3. Sandinista! (lots of songs to come back to on this one - a single album version of this would be killer IMO) 4. Give Em Enough Rope 5. Combat Rock 6. Cut The Crap (I’ve grown to love Strummer’s voice and a few of the songs are guilty pleasures so I don’t hate it as much as I used to but Kramzer ranking this third is probably the most insane moment in the history of Listography 😱)

London Calling is clearly the greatest Clash album - if not the greatest album of any act ever. But Give Em Enough Rope is their most underrated album. It was bizarrely slaughtered by the critics at the time. But to my 16 year old ears it sounded amazing ... and it still does 44 years later.

1. London Calling (This is in my top 10 of all the albums I collected in the last 50 years, and it went directly to my favourite album shelf on the day I first heard it in 1979. It seems like it has a similar effect on everyone who loves rock'n'roll at all...) 2. The Clash (UK Version) 3. Give 'em Enough Rope 4. Combat Rock 5. Sandinista (There is a lot of good music here but it is simply too much and it does not make for a listenable album - it is like Physical Graffity, a band explores all its possibilities and it is interesting etc. If you pick any number of random tracks they are fine but you do not feel invited to sit down and listen through all of it at one time.) 6. Cut the Crap (aka who cut this crap...) It would be interesting to hear how old any of you were when these albums were released? I often have the impression that the impact of a discography is far different when you experienced them as they are released and do not know the whole history already. The first three Clash album made a change in music that most who were not there at the time maybe cannot even imagine. "The only band that matters", had a meaning then. Also worth mentioning that at that time 45s and EPs also were quite important and those from the Clash supplemented the LPs - Black Market Clash from 1980 is a classic.

I’m surprised Sandinista! and Combat Rock are being criticized for their eclectism while London Calling takes the honours. While LC is the most focused of that particular bunch I think the weakest spots on Combat Rock are the hits. Sandinista! is London Calling with the lid taken off and I think it’s brilliant from start to finish, although it’s appeal depends on one’s tolerance grade. Those 3 albums would make up my Top 3. The debut (UK version) slots in nicely at # 4 for me and I think it’s slightly stronger than Give Rm Enough Rope, which is hampered by Sandy Pearlman’s production. The Bruce Springsteen-approach doesn’t fit The Clash’s music. I played Cut The Crap recently again and I’m still not convinced it’s a Clash album, although I give Kramzer kudos for having the guts to place it so high! 😄 Btw. Combat Rock with it’s 46 minutes is by no means a ‘short’ album, although in the case of The Clash I can see where that’s coming from.

Cut the Crap COULD HAVE BEEN a decent record had Joe Strummer would have let manager Bernie Rhodes stay out of the picture in creative input and production. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Lyrically, Strummer took a huge step down overall from what he accomplished on the three previous albums and the new crew that was recruited took a major backseat to what was being shaped into the eventual release. The "Out of Control" demos that have been posted on here in KZfaq will give a huge insight into the possibilities of how this incarnation of the Clash could've accomplished without the megalomaniac tendencies of the manager involved at the time. That being said here's my rankings of the 6 albums from The Clash. 1, London Calling 2. Sandinista! 3. The Clash 4. Combat Rock 5. Give 'Em Enough Rope 6. Black Market Clash E.P. Cut the Crap has "This is England", "Are you Red...Y" and "North and South" as honorable mentions.....

This is one of the only one of these videos where I disagree with the majority of all of your placements. My personal ranking is: 6. Cut the Crap - No words needed, not even a Clash record, one of the worst albums I've ever heard 5. Give 'Em Enough Rope - I really like this album, the first 3 songs never get old and songs like All the Young Punks and Stay Free are legitimate Clash classics. It's just not as good as their top 4 for me 4. The Clash - A kickass debut, definitely shaped punk immeasurably, pretty much every song is a classic 3. Sandinista! - Criticisms that this album is way too long are valid, but goddamn it, the good stuff on here is ridiculously good. The album ends badly with the filler-y side 6, but the fact that they were able to make a good album for about 5 straight sides is a huge achievement. 2. Combat Rock - I've always had an insane fondness of this album. The sound is completely original, every song ranges from great to one of the best I've ever heard 1. London Calling - Cut the Crap may be the worst album I've ever heard, and London Calling may be the best. A completely lifechanging experience that I would definitely recommend.

Back in the day I was such a huge Clash fan, fortunate to have seen them live twice. Wondering if all three of you were ranking the US version of the debut album rather than the UK version. The UK version is much better and might have ranked higher. Also, I completely understand why most everyone who ranks albums on KZfaq do not include live albums or best of/greatest hits compilations. But shouldn't albums like "Black Market Clash by The Clash, "Odds & Sods" by The Who, "Metamorphosis" by The Rolling Stones, "In Utero" by Nirvana, and others which contain studio tracks never before available on any album also be included in ranking? These are not 'best of' or 'greatest hits' collections. If these albums do not qualify, why is "Coda" included in every on-line video ranking of Led Zeppelin albums I've ever seen? Just an observation. Keep up the great work all three of you !
@TastesLikeMusic

Can’t speak for the other guys but I was ranking the UK version of the debut. As far as collections of non album singles...I don’t think they should be included simply because the band didn’t make them with the intention of being a record. You’re right about Zeppelin though. Not sure why everyone includes that one (us included) 🤷🏻‍♂️ We’ll look into putting stricter guidelines in place.

The triple album and the two that followed are a result of them trying to fulfil their 10 album contract with CBS. Every Clash album had terrible production from the disappointment of the first album sounding like it was recorded in a trash can to the rushed production of Combat Rock. By the way the guy with the glasses hasn’t got a clue he should stick to Green Day ! It's what makes punk, well punk are different point of views. Lyrically, the first album under a punk umbrella is all you ever need to hear especially in the world we live in today. The very lines, 'If you don't try, you won't succeed and if Adolf Hitler flew in today, they would send a limousine anyway, can't wake you up nothing ever will. 'Remote Control' is years ahead of itself and ironically probably susses out North America in 2022 than is does Britain. Give 'Em Enough Rope (I prefer the bright production of the debut for this era) 6. Cut the Crap (it's not as bad as some claim, but still the weakest album of the bunch)

I first became aware of them when the most popular kid in my 5th grade class held up a cassette of the debut album in music class and praised it. That made an impression - this is what the cool kids were listening to! A few years later in 7th grade, I picked up Combat Rock on tape not too long after it came out. * At some point I grabbed their debut on vinyl, but I was unaware that it was an American version different from the original 1977. I really love the opener "Clash City Rockers" even though it obviously channels "Can't Explain" (which they do once more on the Give 'Em Enough Rope track "Guns on the Roof"). The rerecording of "White Riot" sounds much better with a punchier bass. * London Calling is clearly their best album. Every song is 5 stars. Just an explosion of musical styles. Joe Strummer and Mick Jones are underrated vocalists. And the lyrics are fascinating. These guys were obviously well-read in regard to history and current events. * Sandinista! is a wild smorgasbord of different styles and experiments, heavy on reggae and quasi-reggae songs. Lots of weird sounds going on, trippy endings and whatnot. Not everything works and I really could've done without the children singing, but there are some scattered gems throughout. The album kicks off with "The Magnificent Seven" which is a supercool rap song that sounds like proto-Big Audio Dynamite. The bass is catchy as hell. Other 5-star songs include "The Equalizer" which is dub reggae with some amazing sounds, while "The Street Parade" is a great pop song with cool out of sync dub guitar. I also really dig "Mensforth Hill" which is an experimental sound collage based around "Something About England" played backwards. I get the impression this triple lp set is a piss take aimed at their record company. * Combat Rock looms large in my mind when I think of the Clash, but I can't quite call the whole package excellent, even though it does have some excellent songs. What a rude bass sound on "Should I Stay or Should I Go" - so tasty! I love the weird "Ghetto Defendant" with guest vocals by Allen Ginsberg. "Inoculated City" is the only track that doesn't do it for me. My version didn't have the ad in the middle which does nothing to elevate the song anyway. I put Combat Rock above Give 'Em Enough Rope because I find it more unusual and interesting, more creative, and there's a much bigger nostalgia factor as well. * Cut the Crap is so bad. It's astounding that Joe Strummer thought the sound of this album was suitable for The Clash. It's loaded with the worst synthetic elements the 80s had to offer. The opener "Dictator" is an absolute mess and those horn synth stabs are terrible. Only the reggae-ish "Three Card Trick" barely passes as a good song, elevating the rating from .5 to 1. Everything else is basically trash. * I still love the Clash!!! Cheers mates!!!!!!!!!!

First couple discs of Sandinista are tops for me - I just ignore most of the third disc. Combat Rock would have been similar but Glynn Johns was called in to make it more commercial. First album is prob second for me. It sounds like what I imagined London to be like at that time - dark, run down, menacing but exciting too. London Calling would be third.

Forget 'Cut The Crap', although Kramzer may have a point as it is the only album I don't own and don't plan to listen to, so I can't comment. The Clash were very experimental from one album to the next. Double and triple albums are meant to be sprawling affairs. This works 100% on London Calling. While I don't like dub and raggae I can listen to it on Sandinista just as I listen to 'Good Night' and 'Piggies' on The White Album. Why? Because they are left field selections and interesting juxtaposed with their rock/punk songs.

When Guy Stevens was producing London Calling the band often wanted to do more takes on songs, usually to speed them up. Guy wasn’t having any of it. He’d tell them what they did was perfect and then go on to the next song. He made a big mark on music history because of his ability to help the band relax and just let the music flow out naturally. This album is so unique in music history. It’s a rare record in that I’m baffled if someone just doesn’t warm to it. It’s got warmth, outlaw mentality, humor, stark portrayals, and best of all there is sheer joy. Not every song is for every listener. But of the nineteen songs most are genuinely great in some regard. Only a few double albums compare at all.

One of my favorite artists (my 4th favorite actually) Here's my list (I have 7) : 7. Cut the Crap - this albums sucks, the only song I think have ever listened to again is "This is England" and even then it is still one of my least favorites of their songs that I have on a regular listen list. Kramzer is crazy. 6. Sandanista! - I once read that on London Calling the Clash sounded like they could do anything, and on Sandanista! they did. The most bloated album I've ever heard. There are good songs there but too much to wade through. 5. Combat Rock - The highs are there but too much filler. 4. Give Em Enough Rope - This is a really great album. I honestly think the songs are as good as their debut and just a smidge less than London Calling but i honestly feel this album is marred by its production, especially compared to London Calling. 3. The Clash (UK version) - The best punk album in my opinion, what Nevermind the Bollucks could have been if the songwriting for the rest of the album was up to the level of the singles. Lyrically miles ahead of the Sex Pistols (who sang angerly but didn't really say much). 2. The Clash (US version) - I can't believe nobody even mentioned that there are 2 versions of their debut. Some may argue it's a compilation but you guys put Magical Mystery Tour on your best of '67 list so screw it. Take out 4 of the weaker tracks from the debut add 4 of the best tracks of the entire Clash catalog-including the musical and lyrical powerhouse (White Man) in Hammersmith Palais which I think is their greatest song-and you get one of the best albums of all time. 1. London Calling - For 15 years I argued that The Clash was better than London Calling even on the one video I ever put up on youtube (since taken down for copyright shit) I put The Clash debut over London Calling. Y'all said plenty of things about it so I'm not going to say much except I want to highlight 3 things not mentioned. First off there is a weak track, "Lover's Rock" sucks not like Cut the Crap sucks obviously (well to all except Krazmer) but almost worse because to me it feels so much weaker than every other song on the album. Second, nobody mentioned Clampdown, which I think is the best song on the album. Third, the production, just an amazingly clean production, something missing from most of the Clash's work. Why Guy Stevens (the producer) wasn't brought back for Sandanista! boggles my mind. Anyway, as always, cool video guys, look forward to the next one.

The best Clash songs are the singles and B sides that aren't on albums. You almost needed to include Black Market Clash. Even the US version of the debut leaves the original for dead. Complete Control, White Man, The Prisoner, Gates of the West, Jail Guitar Doors, Clash City Rockers... all top tier Clash. I agree with Joe's assessment. As much as I love everything up to London Calling, I don't actually think Strummer has any charisma as a frontman. After LC they're unlistenable.

Sandinista! was not their best but for me it was their most important album. It exposed me to musical forms I hadn't embraced before and the length was a positive, you could get lost in it, especially after a couple bong hits. It marked the time when punk/post punk morphed into the great 80s new wave era where bands were getting out of the rock rut and trying different things and different technology. But it was poorly engineered, it sounds so flat compared to London Calling and Combat Rock. BTW- Cannabis was the drug of choice for the Clash and it informed much of their music. Give Em Enough Rope has some great songs (Stay Free, All the Young Punks) but was perilously close to so much 'regular hard rock' - I remember thinking, "have we lost them to commercial rock already?" Cut the Crap was This is England and nothing else. Strummer was a psychological mess and A-hole at this time. All my punk/new wave friends at the time thought correctly that he let us down. Combat Rock was Topper Headon, writing Casbah (great timeless track) and then succumbing to heroin addiction. Should I Stay... works fine but hinted at shark jumping. Straight to Hell was smooth and appreciated. The rest were curios, good for only a few listens. We realized The Clash were dying which was sad. Oh, and The Clash and London Calling are everything they are celebrated for being, I have nothing further to add.

I tried to listen to Cut The Crap again after listening to this conversation earlier today. But no, it did not click for me this time either. However I have always and still like the song We Are the Clash, but it's not an album I want to listen to. I don't care much for Combat Rock either even though it has my favorite Clash song Rock The Cashbah, but I don't like the album version, I like the single mix. They do also have a lot of great songs that were not included on the albums. Their first album is a classic (both versions), it would be my number one. I love the Sandinista album too even though it is very strange. I think Junco Partner is a very amusing song, the way they perform it. And there are lots of great songs on London Calling. I don't find Give Em Enough Rope much memorable, but still not bad.

Someone once told me that the third album on Sandinista! (sides 5 & 6 or the last 12 songs on CD) is extraneous and only meant to be listened to once. If you look at it all of the best songs are on the first two records, with the third including dub versions of songs from the first two records, a remake, backwards songs, the lousy Tymon Dogg track and other experimental tracks. Sides 1-4 actually make for a decent double album. Combat Rock may be their most overrated album. I know so many fans that love it but most of it bores me to tears and I never make it all the way through. I actually find Sandinista! an easier listen.

Criticizing The Clash for incorporating reggae is way off -- connecting reggae and punk fans to each other -- fighting British National Front racism was the point of the band, when it was founded in the 1970s. That's like criticizing the Beach Boys for singing folk songs.
