My list: (Honourable Mentions: Kraftwerk - Kraftwerk, Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant, Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III) 1. The Beach Boys - Sunflower [Overlooked that album. Amazing. Probably my third favorite Beach Boys album now.] 2. Frank Zappa - Chunga’s Revenge [This is a surprisingly conventional record. Underrated also.] 3. Joni Mitchell - Ladies of the Canyon [Her breakthrough in my rankings. I’m interested if she’ll continue with putting out great albums. The first two were okay, this one’s great.] 4. Black Sabbath - Paranoid [Probably the only Sabbath album that’ll make my list.] 5. The Velvet Underground - Loaded [This album is Loaded (with good songs).]

This is a toughie !!!, I was brought into this world in 1970, so I share some iconic albums this year! I’m going CCR & Cosmo’s Factory Just hit after hit, and my father was (and still is!) a huge fan of John Fogerty. He was ALWAYS on our turntable along with 8 tracks of Beatles Hey Jude and Joni Mitchell that same year. Not music related but nice tee Jason! Go Bucs!!

5. Wishbone Ash (Wishbone Ash) Wishbone Ash is sort of a band that never really reached the same heights as many other 1970's rock bands but they are still around and done a lot of albums. This is the first and still one of their most popular amongst fans. It's heavy on guitar and unique. It sounds like something between Cream and Led Zeppelin musically for me. Led Zeppelin III (in this year) is a more diverse and cultural important album but I think I actually reach for this album more. Great stuff. 4. Stage Fright (The Band) Their two earlier records are often more mentioned and perhaps they are a bit more unique but this is a great start if you never heard much of the band. Only good songs and no wasted minutes or seconds. Easy to enjoy if you come from a place of pop/rock. 3. After the Goldrush (Neil Young) I like quite a bit of Neil Young but as you guys (Listography) know.. He has done a lot and not all of it is great or even good. This one however is pure Neil Young. If you ever liked any of his slower songs (not the stuff with heavy guitars) you can't go wrong with this album. Perhaps his best. Easily a top five for most fans I would guess. 2. Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon & Garfunkel) Simon & Garfunkel got gradually better with each album I would say. This contains some real highlights and is overall enjoyable. Some songs might not reach that icon status but they're still good enough. Just like with The Band and Neil Young.. There isn't anything wasted here. No throwaway tracks and none that ramble on for too long. 1. Paranoid (Black Sabbath) The debut certainly has a better cover and I like how groovy it is.. But as a whole album I prefer this one. Today it seems like many fans put this one aside because it has the arguably three biggest songs the band ever did. I think that is a bit unfair. I think it is as good as any Black Sabbath record even though I am not that keen on Rat Salad which is a sign of the times and not long enough to be a bigger setback. Albums that could have made the list in no real order: Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath) Led Zeppelin III (Led Zeppelin Moondance (Van Morrison) In Rock (Deep Purple) - I do think "Child in Time" is perhaps the best rock song ever written but the overall album never appealed to me as much as I feel it should have done. Elton John (Elton John) Tumbleweed Connection (Elton John) Morrison Hotel (The Doors)

Honorable Mention. Neil Young - After the Gold Rush. Moody Blues - A Question of Balance. Derek & the Dominoes - Layla. Beatles - Let it Be. Allman Brothers Band - Idlewild South. Anyone of my top 6 could easily been my number 1. After the Gold Rush just missed my top 5 but I could have had it at number 1. Very strong year but 1971 is even better. Morrison Hotel, my 2nd favorite Doors album after the debut album, very strong album especially the 1st side which is amazing. A couple of Hours ago All Things Must Pass was going to be my pick and it ended up number 3.

1. Allman Brothers Band - Idlewild South 2. Neil Young - After the Gold Rush 3. Jethro Tull - Benefit 4. Soft Machine - Third 5. Santana - Abraxas Back in 1970 itself, David Bowie's Man Who Sold the World, the two CCR albums from the year or Led Zeppelin III might have been on the list, but others have aged better - my choices are a mix of what I loved in the year itself vs. those I still value as high today (most of the time though they are the same). Miles at Fillmore would be on the list if Live albums were permitted + Live at Leeds by the Who. PS - I could not afford All Things Must Pass back in 1970 and later did not find the album until the CD era when I finally bought it. All I knew until then where the few songs that were occasionally played on radio. (Full list www.allmusic.com/user/lists/5fb23d850792d68a492ee737 )

The year was actually the culmination of the seventh decade of the twentieth century (begun on January 1, 1961 and ending with the final second of December 31, 1970), but was nonetheless the harbinger of things to come in the succeeding decade, still the single greatest for rock and potentially even for pop. Here are my selections for 1970 (so hard to limit choices to five), listed alphabetically by title: --'Desertshore' by Nico (superbly evocative offering from the idiosyncratic German chanteuse, perhaps her finest solo effort) --'Fire and Water' by Free (distinctive hard sound from one of the many great British ensembles, enhanced by the powerhouse vocals of Paul Rodgers) --'Gasoline Alley' by Rod Stewart (raw sentiment from this wonderful singer, intimating his even greater effort the following year) --'Paranoid' by Black Sabbath (absolute classic from these heavy metal pioneers, with the spacey "Planet Caravan" my favorite of their songs) --'Starsailor' by Tim Buckley (fragrant, fleeting poetry from a rather underrated, overlooked American talent)

You’re technically right, but no one thinks of decades in that way. 1970 is part of the seventies.
@barrymoore4470
@barrymoore4470 Жыл бұрын
@@TastesLikeMusic It's true that a decade can be any period of successive ten years, so January 1, 1970 to December 31, 1979 can certainly function as a discrete category by which to approach an era. It's also true that most people mean 1970--1979 when they say the Seventies. I myself use it as a sort of shorthand because "the eighth decade of the twentieth century" is an inelegant, potentially pedantic mouthful, but I mean 1971-1980 when citing "the Seventies".

This is tough. My favourite Kinks album Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One, my favourite John Lennon album Plastic Ono Band and my favourite Cat Stevens album Tea For The Tillerman. But my favourite Led Zeppelin album Led Zeppelin III takes the prize for me. Other favourites from 1970; Paranoid and their debut by Sabbath, After the Gold Rush by Neil Young, In Rock by Deep Purple, Medusa by Trapeze, Fun House by The Stooges, Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd, Free Your Mind...And Your Ass Will Follow by Funkadelic, Let it Be by the Beatles. One more album I really love is Cold Fact by Rodriguez. It did nothing in the U.S but was a cult hit here in Australia.

Neil Young - After The Gold Rush. Now I’m realizing I would have to listen to like 10-15 albums in the 70’s in a row in order to make these lists properly and narrow them down. 😂

Paranoid is probably the best album of the year. Playing, songs, tight production, innovation. Can't be beat. Butler was on it with those lyrics. The intro to "Fairies Wear Boots" is some incredible stuff. The delay on the guitar coming through the right channel. Did you ever realize there are two bass guitar tracks running through "War Pigs?" Get out of here. Wow. Great comment about the first album and the "Wizard." "NIB" is that song for me. It's a bigtime showdown between Paranoid and All Things Must Pass. Interesting these young guys keep bringing up Neil Young. I guess I have to give some of that stuff another try. Also does the Hey Jude album count? How weird is it but that thing to me always worked as an album.

Hi Jason Just listened to Emitt Rhodes for the first time and you're right. It's an absolute gem. The comparison with McCartney is undeniable but what he lacks for in originality, he makes up for in a consistently outstanding quality of songwriting throughout. My pick for the year, which I don't think even gets a mention in the comments, is John Cale's Vintage Violence. A fantastic debut from the ex-Velvets man. He's kicking back and having fun, and showing how he can knock off a great tune or two. I can't help but think John Cale is one of the most over-looked men in rock - from a commercial perspective.

5. American Beauty - Grateful Dead (Best Song: Friend of the Devil) - Not usually a fan of the Dead, this was lightning in a bottle for them. 4. Plastic Ono Band - John Lennon (Working Class Hero) - One of the few albums where the lyrics take precedence over the music. 3. Cosmo's Factory - CCR (Lookin Out My Back Door) Not their best, but has an album ever contained that many well known singles? 2. Moondance - Van Morrison (And It Stoned Me) If the second half was as good the first half, I think this album would be in the running for best ever. 1. Layla and Assorted Stuff - Derek and the Dominos (Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?) Arguably the best dual guitar attack album ever. 1970 is a great year. I have an issue though, Jason has mentioned several times 70-74 as the best time for albums. I've been going through the years myself and 1974 SUCKS (despite what Homer Simpson once said). 1973 might be the best ever (71 is close) but 74 has no Pink Floyd/No Zeppelin/No Springsteen and a bunch of weak albums from others. I mean who released their best album in 1974? I know it's a discussion for that year. but It just keeps being repeated, I had to say something about it. Anyway good stuff as always .

Out of that 5 year stretch 74 is indeed the weakest, but I like it more than 69. Some of the big guns are missing but there’s tons of other good stuff. So I’m sticking to my assessment. We’ve already recorded the 74 episode and we do get into it a little further, so that’s all I’ll say for now. It’s a fun debate though. Enjoying your lists, so keep em coming. -Jason

Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band", full of raw emotion with Ringo and Klaus Voormann as excellent back up. Working Class Hero and Mother were classic Lennon. I'd actually rate this album slightly higher than Imagine. The lp was also featured in the UK "Classic Albums" dvd series from about 2008 which discussed the making of the album with recording engineers and interviews with Ringo, Voormann and Ono.
