Me duele que no hay una parte para el Paraíso en la sinfonia, lo seria pefecto.

​@@pauloamaral6069no hay, pero dentro de la obra en sí, si hay una sinfonia. El canto de los ángeles según el mismo Dante. Dante era un seguidor de los juglares aquellos que cantaban las noticias y las daban a conocer con apenas 3 acordes. Su obra la Divina Comedia se las dedico a estos.

It is a very hard piece to come off. The conductor and orchestra did a wonderful job! The big orchestras and famous conductors shy away. Well performed!

Thomas, I suspect you've never been to a symphony concert (that's an observation, not a criticism). If the audience pauses before applauding, that's a sign of great appreciation of a really good performance, of not wanting to destroy the mood. if applause starts to soon, it can really destroy what the performance has achieved. (Not that I'm saying this is necessarily a great performance - haven't listened yet. Actually, although enjoyable this is not really a great work, Liszt was a great composer, but never really mastered longer musical structures.)

@@bryangl1 well, let's not pass judgment with such a broad statement. :) "Mastering longer musical structures" is a rather subjective category to begin with, but even if we go with it: the academic consensus regards Liszt's Sonata in b-minor as the greatest contribution to sonata form in the Romantic Era. Many of Liszt's works which are considered masterpieces are rather substantial (The Faust Symphony, Christus, the Sonata, Via Crucis, the concertante works, a couple of the symphonic poems etc), but even his best operatic fantasies approach the 20 minute mark. As for the Dante Symphony not being a great work - again this seems to me a subjective point. It has countless revolutionary passages in terms of both orchestration, harmony and rhythm: bass clarinet solos, a twelve-tone subject, whole-tone progressions, a waltz in 7/4 - all either very rare or unheard of at the time. It is so rich in novel ideas that one could write a book about it - this coupled together with the fact that (for me) it is great to listen to makes it (for me) a great work.

@@gergelykiss There is never universality in musical criticism, but it is a widespread opinion by musicologists that Liszt's handling of longer musical structures was generally flawed. That doesn't make them unenjoyable; like you, I enjoy the works you mention. He may have been inventive in various ways, but that doesn't have any connection with structure. Further, symphonic poems and operatic fantasies (yes, most enjoyable) are far from being major structured musical forms. The great B min sonata is probably his greatest achievement in structured forms (as well as being a great, exciting and enjoyable work irrespective of the merits or otherwise as to structure). The simple fact that works of symphonic form or similar comprising such a small portion of his output suggests he may not have been entirely comfortable with such musical structures, supported (although not confirmed) by the fact none have ever become regular repertoire for symphony orchestras.This work here seems to be rather episodic and more an extended tone poem than a true symphony (a parallel, perhaps, to Tchaikovsky's 'Manfred').

@@bryangl1 I don't think the perceived lack of "structure" as you (and many others) put it is a flaw. I don't think it is a mistake or an oversight - it is quite obviously a feature. (A feature that many may dislike of course.) Liszt put it down in his writings on the state of music that he considered the structures of Viennese classicism remnants of the past - he was trying to create something new, he even has a quote that goes something like "new wine requires new bottles" (paraphrasing Jesus I guess). I don't think it is a matter of his "not being comfortable with such musical structures" - rather it is a declared goal to do something different. His widely appreciated 4-in-1 design of the Sonata is not unique in his output, he does something similar in the two concertos and elsewhere (and I believe he got the inspiration for it from Schubert's Wanderer-fantasy). But apart from those, his Orpheus is equally brilliant as it grows organically without any constraints of predetermined sections - it is completely different from his Sonata and also from anything else. The large piano works of the Années and the symphonic poems each have a different, unique form - and I'm fairly sure it's not because Liszt tried and simply couldn't write in sonata form. It's not that hard, dozens upon dozens of forgotten 19th-century composers managed to do it. Now, it is another question whether one prefers a more conventional large scale sonata form or an "episodic" work or an idiosynchratic construction - in the 19th century some influential conservative critics started a very persistent tradition that the first one is intrinsically better than the others. For me personally it doesn't matter at all - both can be equally fantastic or dull. Oh, and my list of innovative features in the Dante Symphony was not meant as a comment on structure (I don't believe I implied that in any way), it was a mere reflection on your declaration of it being a "not great work" - for me greatness has many facets and radical innovation combined with an highly enjoyable 50 minutes goes a long way to qualify for it. :)

Why? The music is excellent, varied and well orchestrated. Is it a problem with the romantic style?
