Liszt's "Un Sospiro - Version 1" features my own "ossia cadenza 2" and is played at a moderate-ish tempo.

Yep quite literally the as the piece utilizes what’s known as the three hand effect. To make it sound as if three hands are playing the piece.

I’d say Hamelin’s performance is just as beautiful, but for different reasons (faster arpeggios for a more beautiful melody, but less clarity than Barton’s performance) Both are awesome.

Yes the section beginning around 2:20 is the most difficult part of the piece. Once you’ve mastered that you’re fine.

@Barrack Obama Vlogs Yep, considering that the bottom voice has to be quieter than the top, you need a lot of control with your fingers to be able to jump and keep the volume down. The Cadenzas in this piece are pretty tricky as well.

@@RacoonEvil A staff, that’s the 5 lines with the clef on the left, where you write musical notes. usually there is only two for piano music. Liszt used a third staff to write the melody at the top, while the accompaniment takes two staves at the bottom. Actually that 3 staves part at the beginning looks impressive with the hands crossing, but it’s definitely not the hardest part. I am no pianist, just someone that's toyed with it my whole life. I took this on figuring either I could do it, or I couldn't, only 1 way to find out. Well, as you might guess, I was right and I was wrong! In some ways I marvel at the simplicity of Liszt's composing, taking simple phrases and making them sound really hard when they actually fell right together nicely. Yeah, then there's the other parts! Most of the piece really wasn't bad, just the 2 damn arpeggio's gave me fits.

Well it's not complicated as in complex, there are barely any strange intervals, lots of it is just octaves, it's just a harmony with a melody line, but it sure is difficult to play. Liszt often composed pieces which were just incredibly hard to play, but this is really not that virtuosic

Comparing Liszt’s romantic harmonies and modulations to those of Mozart is a little absurd. From just a harmonic point of view, Mozart would have never written anything like this. That’s not to say Mozart’s harmonic craftsmanship is any less genius than Liszt’s, but Liszt’s is incomparable due to differing styles and harmonic techniques.

Just listen to how little pedal he uses. All the notes are legato BY HIS HAND, NOT by the pedal. That's INSANE. I've never heard so much clarity. Once or twice I thought it was almost too clear, but then my ears adjusted again and I was mindblown once more. Jesus, you're so much better than you get credit for.

Not sure about this... on the sheet there is the notation "Sempre Pedale", wich means "pedal always"... so he uses the pedal almost the whole song, I think.

This is phenomenal!! I first heard this composition in the 1960 movie "Song without End," starring Capucine and Dirk Bogarde, when I was 20 years old. 60 years later I find it on KZfaq, and it is more beautiful than ever. Barton's touch is magnificent, almost mystical. I bought the soundtrack on audio tape (no idea where it is now). It was an emotionally moving film when Liszt leaves his bevy of lovers to use his music in service to God and his Church. "Un Sospiro" was the closing music to the film.

At the music studio I teach piano at, we have a whole bunch of adjoining studio rooms, and when we have breaks in our teaching schedule a lot of us will use the time to practice pieces we're working on... the teacher who shares a studio wall with me is really beautiful and I've always had a huge crush on her... one day she decided to start practicing this piece and I had the chance to listen to her play it so beautifully week after week... after a couple of months I finally realized that listening to her play this amazing piece had made me fall in love with her...

Oh my....Paul!!! This is an exquisite and beautiful rendition of this beloved work of Liszt!!! Just watching your hands alone is poetry in motion!! This is such an incredibly difficult piece of music that you handle with great ease! Your execution of the arpeggios is just as smooth as butter and your crossover work is absolutely outstanding!! This is my favorite rendition I’ve ever heard of this piece. You actually take your time with it and give as much intonation to each note played as you can. Most versions sound more like a rolling cascade of notes to me rather than an beautiful, rolling harmony with a clear melody on top.

Oddly enough I find Liebestraum more difficult to play. But I learned this one when I was more advanced and I learned Liebestraum when my technique was kind of crappy. Just my $0.02, both are difficult but well worth the effort.

I cannot imagine the thrill of mastering this piece. I have started working on Consolation No 3. And it will take a very long time to get to the point where I can play it all the way through, I would trade ALL of my abilities (such as they are ) to really master the piano. Thank you Paul.
