An overland expedition into the Arctic Circle during the Winter isn't a walk in the park, and it comes with a lot of inherent obstacles that need to be considered (especially when preparing for the journey). Fuel range and fuel availability, potential road closures, adverse road conditions and visibility, and of course the brutal cold.
In a large group consisting of our Bronco Raptor, several Jeep Gladiators, a Jeep Wrangler, and others - we were about as prepared for this Arctic Circle Experience and the trials we knew we could potentially face as anyone could be. Including the possibility of a serious snow recovery.

Props to Kevin for driving, always willing! Awesome recovery! Grateful all are safe! In this situation or ANY when someone’s behind the wheel being winched or winching , if there’s ANY steel lines or chain, prop the hood up incase a line snaps. Had a horrific accident here where a snapped winch cable decapitated a father who was winching a stuck vehicle out. Prop the hood up lay it against the windshield as jeeps do , you can even snap it to the windshield. It’s such a simple safety thst no one ever does and too many have passed away from not. A jacket on the middle of the line doesn’t always protect either.

Honestly, not knocking Nitto, but they dont make a good tire for the conditions you guys were on. Most of these rigs are running aggressive MT's or trail graps, which dont stand a chance against the compact snow/ice that remains on these highways for 60% of the year. The EXO Grappler is the correct tire in their line, but it is not good compared to other choices like the Falken At3W or the good old duratrac. I've had every tire under the sun under our company trucks that run these roads year after year for 100's of thousands of KM. Without fail we always return back to running Goodyear Duratracs. We've got 80-100 trucks here at our mine site, and 75% of them are running the goodyear duratrac. Good in the summer, awesome in the winter, and durable as all hell for the abuse of mine roads.

What you think about the good old BFG K02
@meme40s
@meme40s Жыл бұрын
@@cameronyoung6402 lots of people swear by them. We've never had good luck with them. They are great when new but age poorly as the compound deeper in the tread is extremely hard. I think that's why a lot of people love them because when new they are really good, but if you really put the miles on them when they get down to 50% tread life they become terrible.
@JustinCaseWages
@JustinCaseWages Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Duratracs have notoriously weak 2ply sidewalls. So for rock crawling they are not a great choice. As durable winter tire they are good. The Kanati Trail Hog has a similar tread pattern and a 3ply sidewall.

Key points of this video. 1. Being prepared and traveling in groups. Check 2. Knowing how to stay calm and handle a jeep. Check. 3. Jeeps are obviously well built. Check. 4. Why was that guy in the black car.....in a non 4 wheel drive car / jeep / truck / suv, on icy roads in the Artic circle. 4. Scenery is absolutely fantastic.

Hi! I was a winter driving instructor for Eielson AFB 86-90, here’s a serious 2 driving tip when driving. 1: hand position on the wheel left hand is at 9 o’clock and the right at 3 o’clock do not remove your hands from these places on the wheel if you do you’ll oversteer. 2: Emergency braking. Immediately Pop the transmission into neutral, this will disconnect the power from the engine to the drive wheels. As your going into neutral apply gradual brake. DO NOT apply to much brake you’ll either go into a skid losing control or the ABS will kick in now you don’t have control. I hope this helps, it’s a game changer bowing just these two tips. One more, you maybe overinflated in the tire department. I think my heart and nerves are returning to normal now. Clay 🤙

What a trip of a lifetime . I want you on my team apocalypse. Who needs fire and rescue with you guys around. You’re all so calm as the rig flipped over into a snowy ditch. Unbelievable. Tip of the cap to you guys and that team.

I’m proud of you guys for stopping and helping the other motorists along the way, here in the north the code is to always help cause communication is limited and in the cold leaving someone behind can be a death sentence. Everyone hits the ditch sooner or later, slower is better. Well done you two, hope you enjoyed it. There’s lots more fun stuff in summer 😉

Had a rear wheel drive Chevy Box van on a route that was dominated gravel roads like Lite Brite endured on this epic 8,000 mile journey! No chemicals were deployed, a grader bladed to remove loose snow days later, the end game was a hockey rink! I feel your pain and angst, the bigger the challenge, the larger the euphoria at the finish line!!!

Just 1 musher and their team takes the trail to Nome. What you saw in Anchorage was a tag sled (2nd sled) with another musher and another set of brakes to help slow the team as they travel through Anchorage for the Ceremonial Start of the Iditarod. Also, a fan that won an auction is riding in the sled bag of the first sled. It’s just a fun day to eat hot dogs and drink beer provided by the trailgaters and interact with the public and media. The start of the race is the following day. Thanks for showcasing our state sport (briefly)!

I can’t imagine doing that trip without Winter Studded Snow tires. Having just returned from Iceland, rental Rubicon with Studded Winter tires. Game changer. Rolled Jeep, guy driving faster than conditions warrant! Rookie mistake. Put that in the same category as the SF Bay Area idiots driving to Tahoe in 4 wheel drives too fast. I’ve seen many on their lid in the years driving/skiing to Tahoe. Thankfully, nobody hurt. End of rant. Again, great trip! Envious and wish I was there.

Please do a post mortem and go into specific detail about seat comfort, leg room, etc. on a long trip, noise levels. I wondered why while in the vehicle you kept your coats in. Was the climate control not up to snuff? I know during an ice storm near Montreal the defroster on my then Gen2 Raptor didn’t do well on windshield. Also, why did you not have off road lighting? TYVM for great content. And love the glasses, Kevin.
