Having too narrow of a grip for bench means you’re going to be relying more on your triceps and shoulder muscles to lift the bar whereas with a wider grip it will use your chest muscles instead. You can use this with push-ups to target different muscle groups by using a narrower or wider grip to target a load of different muscle groups

depends on what your goal is. Is your goal to max your bench press then a wider grip = shorter range of motion. If your goal is to build muscle i wouldnt recommend that, bigger range of motion is more gains

@@okand7130 The difference has to be bigger then, you can’t move your hands an inch an expect different muscle activation. If you move your grip wider or narrower, you WILL feel a difference

Wide grip, back arch and leg drive are good for benching maximum weight. Thats all powerlifting technique. If you’re just trying to build a bigger upper body though, try close grip bench, incline dumbell bench, larsen press, or variations of these. They’ll fill out your physique much better than wide grip benching (i wide grip benched for 10 years and my lower/mid chest is like 3x bigger than my upper chest and shoulders)

Good job on your bench, I remember in highschool 185 seemed hard, 2 plates and 2 25s, you're also young and haven't packed on that adult weight yet, I don't work out and do construction and even though I stopped the gym after highschool I found I was still able to do 205 and it seemed way easier, I'm also 50 lbs heavier than highschool, most important thing with bench is it's a full body exercise, lock your core incredibly tight and flex your things and butt, preload your back by arching and then lying down, if you can get the lift so you're engaging all those muscle groups you'll have way better stabilization and that makes it way easier to lift and more power as well.

Great games! But I just have to comment the bench. There is no right or wrong grip, use the grip that feels good on your and exactly your joints. Wide and narrow grips just emphasize different muscles. To simplify, narrow is more for triceps and wider more for pecs. The very wide grip used in powerlift is a different thing. It's just to get the range of movement as short as possible, so it's easier to lift heavy loads. Only people who compete should use the very wide grip.

190 ain’t a bad bench. Keep your hands slightly wider than shoulder width, and pull your shoulders back, arching your back slightly. This is how you emphasize the chest, and it’ll allow you to lift heavier while also seeing bigger chest gains. Never take your butt off the bench though

Baby steps on the beach, its about building each session. Also grip will chnage how much effort each muscle group gets involved just be careful of your shoulders with wide grip.
