Lithium is certainly becoming the future of overland travel, but is the technology ready for cranking our large capacity vehicles?
In this episode we dive deep into the specifications, features and testing of iTechWorld’s new lithium cranking battery, the 1420CA PRO. We conduct voltage test, capacity tests, cranking tests and freeze test to see how it performs. I install the battery into my Landcruiser and discuss some of the physical and chemical differences when compared with a traditional AGM battery.
If you are considering a lithium battery, particular an engine bay mounted cranking battery for your setup, this episode is not one to be missed.
Check out my under bonnet lithium video for a more traditional ‘deep cycle’ battery -

I was born and lived in Canada for a good part of my life and can add through first hand experience that it’s not only the cold temp of a battery that creates challenges. The BIGGEST issue by far is the viscosity of the engine oil at very cold temperatures. It will literally be the consistency of molasses. Now imagine a starter trying to spin a crankshaft through something that thick. The additional current draw in that scenario is massive and everything but the largest CCA and healthiest of batteries will struggle. Throw in the fact that it is much more difficult to atomise and ignite the fuel/air mixture in a freezing climate and you can see why batteries only make it through a couple of winters before they need replacing. I guess that’s why some bright spark invented block heaters for cold climates. On a seperate note, I wonder if Itech would have provided you with a freebie if your comparison was against another lithium start battery 🤔. Nice work on the testing mate. I have always stated I will replace my lead start with a lithium when it dies. The weight savings is the only convincing I need. Cheers from Jafffa Adventures 😎👍

I hear you! This would make a huge difference to the overall power required to start the engine. Unfortunately just not an option for testing in my circumstance and demographic. Maybe someone can test these unit in the Vic High country one winter and see how they go, would be an interesting watch. In relation to the freebie, I can't answer that, but I actually don't know of many other cranking batteries (if any) on the market to compare it with? My review on the battery is designed to be the 'value for money' category and therefore rules out companies like DCS which are inherently different in the their design anyway. Are you aware of any other rated cranking batteries? The weight saving is a huge advantage, so lets hope this unit can hold up to it's claims 🤞 Cheers, Nathan.

Another excellent video. Many thanks for doing that test, as I have been considering a Lithium cranking battery. Regarding your statement that we are never going to reach minus 20C in Australia. Never say never. 😁 It has already happened and the coldest recording was at Charlotte Pass in NSW on the 29th of June 1994. It reached minus 23 C. As we all know, it's not a common occurrence in Australia, hence I don't think it will be an issue when buying a battery. 😁👍🏼🇦🇺

Thanks, that was an excellent review. I am surprised it did so well on the CCA. I would love to see one of these things pulled apart to see what, if any, BMS is inside as I would have expected it to not charge when below freezing, which looks to be the case (not charging) after you started the cruiser with the frozen battery. Not suggesting you should do this though. Cheers Mark

Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. There is a chance that the time taken between freezing the battery and charging it, it managed to increase in temperature a little and the lack of additional voltage in the started engine would be consistent with a hold on the charging current. We'll see what happens down the track 👍 Cheers, Nathan.

Excellent test, was very informative Great to see they work in the cold However I'm more interested in how they survive the hot temps under the bonnet. I understand you can't provide long temp results (yet) but would have been good to heat up a battery and see what happens to the volts etc in similar fashion as you did for the cold test ?
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. I hear what you are saying, however I just don't think it will have any adverse effects on the cranking potential. Given that CCA's area measured at low temps and the data shows that the cranking power is compromised at these temperatures, I thought this would be a better test. Obviously high temperatures (above 80 degrees) would just theoretically cut out the BMS, therefore making it unusable however this doesn't seem to happen when fitting. Further, the main concern for heat damage is the long term CCA rating and the capacity. This is what I hoping to test down the track. Cheers, Nathan.

G’day Nathan, keep up the great work! I myself popped the iTechworld’s 1420 pro under the bonnet of my 200 a few months back and love it, although I just believed what I read from itechworld and the fact that Terry King (Jafffa) tested their 120amp under the bonnet in his 200. Toward the end of this video you mentioned the winching issues which I agree, seem painful however, it is what it is. I’m wondering if you’re going to find (I’m looking lol) a timer that will control those time constraints that will make it a lot easier to adhere to. Keep up the great work, I look forward to learning more from you in the future.

I purchased one of these starting batteries about 3 years ago. First problem i had was when my 6lt SS engine was running and battery reached full charge the altenator warning dings and flashing began on dash. Problem i worked out was the battery bms shut incoming charge to protect battery, the altenator was in charge mode and then had like a return surge current. This i found can easily fry diodes. I tech said turn headlights and radio, fan on when driving or engine idling. Yes it works, but don't forget. Next, if storing vehicle for a month or more, disconnect the battery, it can be drained by vehicle computer. Battery if charged will start vehicle easily several months later on reconnecting cable. And occasionally ,not often i get home ,lock vehicle and next morning engine won't start. Test battery 11.5...almost flat. Yes can use a power pack to jump it. I think there were many complaints initially. I've adapted ,but my SS is my occaisonal sunday drive, garaged usually. Hope that helps.

Operation in high temperature is something that is going to take long term testing. The lithium battery will shut down at 80 degrees Celsius, however it's going to be the long term effects on the battery, being mounted in the engine bay that will determine its effectiveness. Needless to say that a long term review will come in time and we can re-measure the batteries capacity and performance to compare to it's new state. Cheers, Nathan.

Have you looked into what a Lithium cranking battery does to your alternator? Some videos suggest that since the Li battery can take a much larger charging current for a longer time, a stock regulator may not be smart enough to handle it and could overheat. They suggest that to use a Li cranking batter you need to add an external regulator. Thoughts?

All 12.8v lithium batteries are lithium ion phosphate. They are safer, have higher cycle life, the voltage range mates up with lead acid. The main issues are minimum charging temperature (0c normally), huge load on alternator (until the battery is charged) and life is lowered above 45c. As long as you can live with the downsides then they work mint, last for ever and deliver huge power output for their entire capacity
@XploringOz

lipo and lifepo4 batteries do not appreciate high temperatures that are found in internal combustion engine bays. They will work but will drop capacity faster than if not placed there. I have seen other reviews of itechworld's lithium starter batteries where they have shown a lower capacity after a year than would have been expected but for high temperature operation. Perhaps make a note to yourself XploringOz to recheck the battery's capacity in a years time after using it as a daily driver cranking battery.

If that battery is being used as an auxillary and the driver doesn't notice its hot and continues to keep it in a harsh environment shit could go south. that was my thought a year ago.

I would be interested in the amps the lithium battery draws from the alternator. It's widely known in the lithium battery community that the li battery's very low internal resistance means it will place a considerable load on the vehicle's electrical system even if the alternator is not in a position to supply the current to hold voltage regulation. This type of load can result in alternator failure. Victron issued a whitepaper that discusses this aspect of things but it refers to lifepo4 batterys where this unit may be a polymer.

Sorry to sound negative here, but if the Lithium battery is sensitive to heat and under bonnet remperatures, why didn't you test that? You seem to have done the complete opposite by testing at freezing conditions.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, completely understand your concern here. The reason I didn't test the heat capabilities, is we already know the BMS will shut the battery down at 80 degrees Celsius, before any damage is caused to the cells. Shy of placing this battery into an oven, this can't be tested any other way... and I'm not keen on explaining to the insurance company why we had a house fire when sticking a lithium car battery in the oven 😂 Further, the main concern with lithium and heat is the longevity of the battery and it's performance over a period of time when exposed to constant high temperatures (AKA engine bay). For this reason, I will be conducting similar tests in the future after some time using the unit, to see whether to results have been significantly effected by the operating conditions. The reason we tested the cold conditions as this is an important part of measuring the claimed CCA ratings, particularly when the battery is new and we can compare these results to the claimed specifications. Cheers, Nathan.
