Emily & Clark's Adventure

4 ай бұрын

As part of our battery review series, we've been requested to review some LiFePO4 golf cart batteries. Well, we don't have a golf cart...but luckily, our landlubber friend Andrew does! We converted his Duffy Electric boat (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fr19a7yf0bHJloU.html) a while back. Now he plans to add a solar panel and a BankManager to his golf cart. This video is a before and after of the results.
The battery in this video is now sold as a FEENCE:

Love to see how the solar panel on the top works out.

Great! I have a golf cart that hasn't been used & needs an upgrade, a solid solar panel and an elderly mom who would love to get out more. Thank you Emily & Clark! (Besides I have to contact you concerning the battery manager for my sailboat) Ah well. Great idea & use. Be well.

So many advantages there changing to that single LifePo4 battery , e.g. no more topping up of over a dozen cells with distilled water, no more acid corrosion of the terminals/ posts/ wiring , and a higher sustained voltage while discharging ( driving longer between charging ) . Was a bit surprised only 1 battery was needed to replace those 6v batteries ! Guess you won't be going back to deep cycle lead acid anytime soon.

Good episode. Quite the difference. 300 lbs is crazy. In drag racing, 10 pounds weight reduction is equivalent to a 1 hp gain. 300 would be like having an extra 30 hp.

Re: cold temp charging: It would make sense to me that if you have power to charge but can't because the temperature is low to use that power to heat the batteries till they are able to charge. Even outside at -10C or more, there is enough room to put a heat rope around the battery and still fit foam insulation.... but, Florida prolly doesn't need it :) The video was fun but it was no surprise that the speed difference was not that much. Speed is a mix of both current available and the voltage. However, what should have been much more of a surprise would be the range. Certainly the comparison of 100AH to 130AH is a very small part of the story because the depth of discharge available. I would expect much more than a 30% range increase. Also, aside of a longer range, I suspect the get up and go would show less deterioration when the "tank" is almost empty which the difference between 33V for LA and 40V of the Lifepo4 (at end of range). Edit: I see someone else figured he started with 50AH, but I thought they were 100AH. Sorry if I got it wrong.

It's 100ah of lead but one doesn't want to discharge lead below 50% so 50ah Everyone including Andrew missed that due to the low internal resistance of li one can expect a higher amp delivery to the motor at the same starting voltage. Add that to the fact that the rest voltage is higher you can expect more "go". I don't use a golf cart but I don't think of them as drag racers. The decision should be about range and battery life cycle.

Hi Mr Clark 😊 solor Would you think a carbon battery can be a choice with lithium Like 200 amp carbon/200 amp lithium or would their be a better choice on mixing amp with veritable chemistry 2 answer would be fine Curtis
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 4 ай бұрын
If you mean with a BankManager yes carbon lead batteries are the same basic chemistry and have been used successfully with li and a BankManager

I thought they were going to be testing a lithium battery that has the CG2 standard dimensions. I would be interested in that, as my battery storage onboard has been built around the CG2 lead acid batteries, and I haven't found lithium replacements that don't cost the earth.

Do you really think this cost all that much?
@markreynolds8630

No, I don't. Maybe I didn't explain myself clearly. I have been looking for lithium batteries that are the same dimensions as the standard GC2 , normally 6v lead acid battery. Battleborn batteries do one, but it is very expensive.

Clark. What is the advantage of Bank Manager if not combining Pb/acid with LiFePo4? I switched my battery arrangement after I purchased my Bank Manager (purchased for 36VDC system). I now have 48VDC system (Pb/Acid and LiFePo4) and want to set up my Bank Manager for the first time. It came with three resistors (I think because of 36 volt system) and no schematic for the resistors installed in the Bank Manager circuit. What arrangement do I set up with my system now at 48VDC and my Bank Manager? Do I need another resistor, no resistors, .....? Thank you!!

For 48v you really should get a 48v contactor. We no longer do the resistor thing. In some installs they got dangerously hot. So if you use the resistor add one more and make sure you install them on an adequate heat sink!! The BankManager is the only charge controller I've seen that charges LiFePO4 correctly. So Andrew will use one to control charge and to provide a "reserve" tank function. See the Duffy video

Does the app have a pin code to "lock" the battery? If it's an expensive item, thrives would soon learn all you need is a free app .

Of course not only do you have more amp hours, but you can use more of them. So he went from 50 amp hr to like 110, so he should get about twice the range.

Indeed, the 36 volt 100 amp hour lead acid batteries will carry a 4,000 watt load for 0.38 hours if you allow a 50% discharge rate however a 135 amp hour lithium battery will carry a 4000 watt load for 0.92 hours since you can allow an 80% discharge so about 2.42 times the usable capacity from the 135 amp hour lithium compared to the 100 amp hour lead by simple calculation without accounting for the weight difference. You could get about equal runtime as the 100 amp hour lead when using a 55 amp hour lithium and perhaps a bit more runtime due to the weight savings. Also don't discount the additional and more consistent performance you'll get from the higher voltage the lithium provides. You also get the benefit of no more corrosion from battery acid issues when you using lithium. Cleaning up, mitigating and repairing damage from battery acid does add to maintenance costs beyond having to maintain the level of the electrolyte in lead acid batteries. Best!

@neilfromclearwaterfl81 of course that assumes they don't hammer the gas pedal all the time. That battery can put out a lot of juice!

@@paulwyand6204 It only states usable capacity which will remain fairly constant regardless of how quickly they consume it. The 100 amp hour lead has about 1.52 usable kWh while the 135 amp hour lithium will give you about 3.68 usable kWh after factoring in line losses, voltage drop (on lead the drop will be more significant), etc however how fast you consume it is another matter. On 36 volt/100 amp hour lead the calculator I used drops the MAX theoretical 1.8 kWh to 1.52 usable kWh. Best!
