Unless you are running an unusually heavy direct drive, the heated bed is MUCH heavier than the X axis. You could argue that the Y axis imparts a lower moment of inertia as it is closer to the bottom of the machine, but I've always found minimizing Y axis moves to improve quality on bed-slingers. Even the original dev of the lithophane site recommends printing minimizing Y movements on critical surfaces. Did not even stop to compare the two results.

I've had the best luck with detail by turning my photos black and white medium tones and then converting to stl. I've always printed them upwards on the z axis as well, not laying flat. I'll try my next one along the Y axis

I cannot get these to print all the way. Last one I tried was an estimated 10 hour print and about 8 hours in, it spaghetti'd everywhere. I have tinkered with the settings but I can't figure it out. Last settings I tried .16 layers 45mm speed 200 Nozzle Temp 97% Filament flow rate

My printer is Ender 3... I print both X and Y axis.. but not seeing any quality difference..
@gravity-less3dprinting624
@gravity-less3dprinting624 3 жыл бұрын
If you are printing with extremely slow speed, the overall vibration become negligible in both axis, so the effect might be not observable. Hope my answer help to explain🙂

@@gravity-less3dprinting624 Thank you... Should I use 100% infill or increase the number of walls for good quality and better printing speed
@gravity-less3dprinting624
@gravity-less3dprinting624 3 жыл бұрын
@@azaharuddinsk100 For our testing, we implement both 100% infill and increase the number of walls, the quality is good. If u want slightly lower printing time, u can try 99%infill, the quality will still be great but u need to choose the infill pattern.

Is the tip about printing along the Y axis still true with a printer like an Ender 5 where the bed only moves in Z? Thank you.
@gravity-less3dprinting624
@gravity-less3dprinting624 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, that is a very good question. The main idea is to print in the axis direction where the printer is having least vibrations. Beside the heat bed, the movement of the hot end will also contribute to the vibration. But for your case, Ender 5 (core xy printer) because the movement structure is almost similar along both x and y axis, it will be less difference in effect. Thus this tip will be not effective for you. Good luck and happy printing.

The ones I have printed flat have actually printed pretty well but everytime I try to do one vertically it fails, it gets like 20% or so and then messes up everytime. Any suggestions for me?

use a brim. you need to keep it from wobbling as it gets higher. make sure you have good bed adhesion. If you are printing on glass, try some glue stick.

I'd say try it yourself. It probably wouldn't waste but a teaspoon of resin, if it didn't work. You'd know within the first few layers if it will work.

Hi, in our video, we mentioned white and light colour filament(light grey, light blue). We are very sorry that you are being missleaded . We will still try to improve time by time. Also we think that you have a great finding which can help others to prevent printing lithophane again using transparent filament. Thanks for sharing the experience here. We hope you can enjoy your future 3DPrinting project🙂👍
