The way the wing is tied reminds me of the improved Jassid Marinaro describes in his book In the Ring of the Rise. I've been tying my Jassids with this wing type since junglecock has been so tough to find. As always, your instructional videos are an art of fly tying excellence on the web. Best, A. Bogley

I love watching your work! You explain things so simply and clearly! And never rushed as so many others do. As a newbie to tying, I get inspired to be challenged. My flies are not as good looking but for most parts they work and there is nothing like hooking a fish on a fly you tied! Thanks.

Thank You! Really nice fly and I love all your videos and the way you narrate them and explain the process. Just retired and started tying a year or so ago and your videos have be a great help. I think it can even tie this one. lol thanks again. AL

I tied a half-dozen of these and used them yesterday on a local fishery, needless to say, the trout readily ate these during the hatch. It was a perfect match for the hatch, perfect size, and shape. I made a slight modification to the original tie which seemed to strengthen the wing. I brushed clear nail polish on the wing to help bond the fibers together. Plus, it gave it a bit of a shine, similar to an actual wing. The wing is a bit fragile but this proved to be a killer pattern. I consistently was catching fish when other anglers seemed to be spending time digging through their fly box. Thank you for posting this!!

That is a sweet little fly. Just in time also, I just found a few sunning themselves on a guardrail this afternoon.

We do have quite a few of them here in NW NJ but most waters are now closed for stocking. 3 to 6 inches of snow tomorrow isn't going to make the season come any sooner either.

Hello there. Great fly pattern, tied 6 of them and went up on March 2nd and 3rd. I hammered the brown trout on these and they wouldn't take anything else. Can you give a decent recommendation to putting a parachute on this fly? I couldn't see the fly, but the Brownies certainly did. I am going to experiment as a novice tyer. Thanks so much, Chad

If you get the chance to try using some natural black squirrel Body hair it works great and is easyer to work with, but all around awesome tie and pattern thanks

I really wish the idea were mine Mike, but it was pirated directly from Hans Weilenmann's CDC and Elk, another fabulous pattern.

I like the look of this fly and have tied up about a dozen. But as a relatively new fly tier I have a question. It's is probably too long after the video was published to expect a reply but I'll give it a try. I find that doubling the hackle stem over makes the area behind the eye a bit bulky and, for me, makes the final whip finish a little harder. In all your other dry fly videos that I've watched you tie in the stem once and wrap the hackle back-to-front. My question is, is there any particular reason that you wrap the hackle front-to-back for this particular fly? Does it increase durability? Is there any reason Not to tie back-to-front?

May I ask why you tie the hackle back towards the hook point as opposed to towards the eye? It would seem that it would be easier to do your whip finish at the end.

Hi Tim. I'd like to tie this a little larger (sz 12-14) to imitate Michigan's early black stonefly. Aside from the hackle size, is there anything else you would change as I size it up?

It's a Whiting Hackle Gauge (none better in my opinion). Orvis and Feather Craft both carry them as do others.
