In a way it probably is. A dolphin is definitely smart enough to think if this creature got in then I can get out. @@Cricket9579 Do you read dolphins thoughts then??? The dolphin isn't happy babes. While I can't read dolphin's thoughts.. I have studied their behaviour and what they're natural habitat and lifestyle should be like. This ain't it. The dolphin does seem curious and interested in the child, they are naturally curious and highly intelligent animals. In this situation, the dolphin may not be asking for help... but it was definitely trying to communicate with the girl. It appears to be trying to ask her to play with him or wants to find out more about this child. The tank these dolphins are kept in however, are far too small for 4+ dolphins and is way too shallow. And the lack of stimulants in the tank is extremely dangerous for these animal's cognitive and mental state. Studies have shown that dolphins (amongst many other animals) that are not stimulated enough have committed su*cide due to stress.

Dolphins like orcas swim vast distances at great speed with their pods. Their diet is poor, no space for swimming, lonely and frustrated. Their emotions are similar to ours. These animals begin to show stereotypic behaviors like thrashing about on the enclosure, swimming in endless circles and creating anything to do to for fill the time when they aren't preforming. Their life expectancy in the wild is around 50 years. In captivity, they're lucky if they see their 1st birthday. Captivity kills.

A lot of these animals have issues or come from places that have made them lose their natural survival instincts so that they would not be able to let them survive in the wild, some animals also help to breed and make new offspring which then are released into the wild. I'm not saying all zoos are great, but zoos have changed a lot over the past decade, and a lot of these animals are well taken care of and fed and help to ensure that their population thrives in the wild. That dolphin would not be chilling closing it's eyes and be cute in front of that child if it was in a stressed environment.

As beautiful as this interaction was, they shouldn't keep these higher intelligence lifeforms in chlorine pools. In all cases they should be rehab pools connected to the ocean through gated access. They could still have a large viewing window in such a set up, and the dolphins would still be interactive because they're naturally inquisitive creatures. They don't do this because these dolphins are owned, money-making assets. ugh

@@johnbumpus7138These were probably raised in captivity and born in captivity. If they were released to the open ocean they wouldn't know what to do. This exact same argument was used with Keiko. He could never fully get accustomed to being at sea. He could barely hunt for himself. Yes it's incredibly sad, but that's the nature of these things. Luckily, it's now illegal to do that to orcas. Dolphins are more easily capable of surviving in this environment, however.

Many animals in the zoo are RESCUED and they can't live in the wild, if not for zoos pandas would be extinct, everything in zoos is adapted to their well-being and entichment. when I was younger at a local aquarium during the dolphin show my little demin jacket got splashed. I was so proud and refused to ever let my mom wash it. I later decided against becoming a marine biologist (mostly due to the abysmal pay and questionable industry ethics) but core memory and lifelong love and appreciation for sea life for sure

When the little girl is older, she will also feel guilty.. the mother is obviously ignorant about captured dolphins suffering...

Humans like to think they are the biggest and baddest sadly. There is so much more to life than what meets the eye.

You are very right. They are extremely intelligent and also highly emotional animals . They have been known to injure themselves against the sides of the tanks out of sheer frustration of being in tightly confined spaces and not enough room to move about . . This is not the case at EVERY facility but nonetheless, it just is sooo sad . On a lighter note , there was a fascinating documentary I watched about dolphins in where they were showing an experiment that suggested that dolphins have self awareness and can recognize themselves in a mirror and know it is “them” . They would place a mirror on the side of the tank and you’d watch them stop in front of it and be all curious at first . But then you’d see them start to wave their fin back and forth or do a little somnersault . Sort of similar to what a child does when they are first learning to recognize themselves. It was incredibly fascinating

They're really not, we have a very good understanding of their intelligence levels but their social skills are very well developed.
