I understand you. I'm bisexual and came out to my Christian mother a few months ago. It wasn't as bad as I thought but I totally understand that sometimes it's too hard or dangerous to come out. You don't have to 'come out' if you don't want. You can live your life however you want whilst trying to keep yourself safe. If there's ever a time when you want to come out.. maybe she'll need time to accept it. It maybe she will be awful and you might want to cut her out of your life. Whatever it is, you don't need to make that decision right now. The best thing would be if you had friends you could confide in and be discrete.

It's problematic because when we say "gay" to a straight person they immediately think of the sex part of being gay rather than the love part. Parents and children have never discussed each other's sex lives . . . not even straight parents and straight children. The details are never discussed, you just assume they only do things you would consider normal -- whatever that is.

@@Justhppy2behere Homophobia affects bi/pan people too?? I could call it queerphobia or some wildly umbrealla’d term but people largely know what I mean. As a bi person myself I don’t love how everyone acts like it’s “bi erasure” every time you describe something as homophobia. When someone calls me the f slur they aren’t calling me it because I’m bi, they’re calling me it because they assume I’m attracted to anything they deem gender non-conforming for someone like me. So when I say she unlearned homophobia and stopped feeling weird about me, I’m not saying something that misrepresents *my* experience. Also, I was raised in a Catholic bubble and every loved one I have any history with is deeply conservative in their views when it comes to gender and sexuality. Not everyone can simply cut out loved ones over it, and I was literally 16 when I wrote that so I wasn’t about to run away purely out of principle. You weigh what’s safer and go accordingly. This isn’t worth me typing out such a long response but I’m bored and BEYOND annoyed with people assuming they know best on the other side of a screen. Now I am a happy and healthy adult and the friend in question has indeed examined her worldview and become a compassionate adult alongside me. Obviously you never owe bigots your attention and your safety comes first, but I don’t think it is fair to assume that a 16 year old girl who has never met anyone beyond the Catholic conservative sphere is “beyond redemption” or whatever. She is a good person and I felt that and I fought for her to become someone she’s proud to be today.
