Little India in Kuala Lumpur: It Didn't Wow Me

Ай бұрынIn today's video, I explore the Brickfields area in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. To be precise, I visit Little India inside Brickfields. It took me some time to find any Indian influence, but I eventually came across Little India. The delicious smell of the food helped me find it!
I was probably expecting a bit more from Little India. What I found was just a small street with some Indian restaurants. Don't get me wrong, the food looked amazing, and I couldn't wait to try it. I guess I was hoping for more.
For the first time in Malaysia, I felt some bad vibes, so I left the first restaurant because I didn't feel welcomed. But when I moved on to the next restaurant, I was greeted with open arms and had a great experience. I had a good day in Brickfields and Little India, but it wasn't amazing.

Actually you are right. Little India and China Town to me as a Malaysians sounds funny because we are everywhere. The creation of these places are actually artificial in nature. For tourist. Not locals.

I went to Little India in Singapore for a curry. I asked for spicy. Within an hour I was on the toilet 😁 Enjoyed the vlog 👍

Malaysia … 30% Indian , 30%Chinese , 30% Malay , 10% other . Awesome food culture. Btw Ipoh is a great town to decompress and relax after KL. Spent a couple weeks there and really enjoyed

Nice one, seeing my old haunts in Brickfields. Allways stayed in this area as I like a good Ruby murry. Looks like they have cleaned the area up, used to be the red light district and generally a bit grubby.

the self service ones are great - you put what you want on a plate and sit down. a guy comes by and looks at it and writes down on a ticket -- and its usually like 15rm (~$3) for me - I really like paradise in bukit bintang, very popular. you had a dosa at that place

Thank Wayne! Really enjoying the boots on the ground K.L. walkabouts and getting reacquainted with the big old town. Btw, Selamat is 'Welcome' if you hadn't caught that yet. Also, at 12:45 it used to be in Malaysia you had to make your own number plates to spec. and there was shops that would make them for you I was told that was how it used to be done back in old England but is that how it was? Looks like just sticking the numbers on motorcycles works. Being an old film guy, I like 25 FPS

Nice one mate! I do think we use to stick number plates on in the UK, many years ago. Not sure about making our own, but sounds familiar mate. I did quite like 25fps also, makes it look more real with the motion blur. Not sure if I'll stick with it or not. Cheers Jack.

Having grown up in the Northwest of the U.S. with its English weather and then Alaska I and working in Asia I thought I could handle the equatorial heat and humidity, and for a while the heat and humidity in Malaysia and Singapore was a welcome change. But after a few months I started to loose energy and motivation. Friends said it was the A/C so I stopped using that, and in Penang I could sleep with fan and the windows open and I felt a bit better but, within a few days of in Cameron, Japan or Australia I felt refreshed and my energy came back. I'm seriously thinking of retiring back to Penang if I can manage a visa, and your comment has me wondering about going back to the heat now that I'm older?

Food looks great. Ghee is clarified butter made from melting butter, I worked at the butter board in Qld & we sent it overseas. I see Billy Bailey lives near you in Devon👍

Adyar Anand Bhavan is franchise that started in India if I am not mistaken. Clean vegeatrian south indian dishes. hits the spot and affordable!!

This area of the city isn't as clean or well-maintained as in the previous videos. Informative perspective of the area. Nothing like Bangkok for a major SE Asian city.

Yes, this area was more old and not so well maintained as the city Center. I do believe this use to be the red light area .

There used to be a large red light district in that area in the 80s and 90s but not sure if it's still there now.

It's gone. It was around the Monorail station, just a block from the main police station. 🤣 Supposedly they all moved to Chinatown (near Jalan Petaling).

Ah.. "Ghee roast plain" is what Malaysians would call a "Crispy Thosai" or "Paper Thosai". This restaurant's owners are actually from India, I think, rather than Malaysian Indian. RM12 is EXPENSIVE.. other restaurants would charge maybe RM3 for the same thing. That's what Saravanna Bhavan charges. The red and white dips are called "chutneys". You SHOULD try this same dish again at one of the many Indian restaurants near your hotel.. it's mainly a breakfast thing. And you can get coffee with it. And it shouldn't cost so much.. when i get it it costs less than RM5 with a cup of milk tea.

This is not a knock on your video, your vids are good. But KL is just " meh" from what I see. No charm, not very interesting. Maybe I'm not able to see what you were seeing. Anyway, kinda looking forward to you at some time back in Chiang Mai and that area. Keep up the good work! 👍

Yeah Little India is kinda boring & quite dirty if I am to be honest. Anyway, I was just wondering. Are u planning on going to other parts of Malaysia or are u just staying around KL? Since u r more of a laidback kinda guy, I have a feeling that u might like Ipoh or Melaka more than KL. I have a feeling it is more your kinda vibe. Penang is quite lovely too

Brickfields. 🤣🤣🤣 Those "old style" flats aren't that old, but they are low cost. It's called Little India because a lot of the inhabitants are Tamil (from Southern India). Not too obvious around the residential areas but very obvious in the area around KL Sentral - most of the businesses and restaurants are Indian owned, and it's a fantastic place to eat Indian food. It's sort of become gentrified these last 10-15 years, with the appearance of high rise hotels and a huge shopping mall and office buildings, but not too long ago most of it was two storey shophouses like you see around the monorail station. A lot of the area was, in the 1960s, a huge railway depot, with maintenance sheds, workshops and a huge roundhouse.

@@WalkAboutWayne Yeah, in the last 20-25 years a lot of the city has been rebuilt. There are remnants of the old city left, Little India is one, the area where your hotel is at is another, parts of Bukit Bintang and Chow Kit would be another. To be honest I don't go to Little India much, either.. once in a while I will watch a movie at Nu Sentral (the mall attached to KL Sentral) and then I 'd pop on over for a bite.

Although I have no interest in Malaysia, you’ve got to be one of the most consistent vloggers in SE Asia who works hard to bring content for your viewers to get an idea of what it’s like in different places. Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam are my top choices.

True.. Don't expect much service at most Indian restaurants. Most really aren't that bad, in some cases it's more of a buffet, or you order at a counter. There's actually four or five different kinds of Indian restaurants, from Nasi Kandar joints to Banana Leaf curry houses to regular Mamak restaurants.

33 million population in Malaysia .2.9million are Indian.Not so little India.You must check out george town,Penang while your there then you can get a direct flight from there to Phuket ,flying with firefly.Too easy man.Enjoy watching
